  1. Sure, so what happens next year with the second round of compliance buyouts?

Flyers decide to pursue [insert FA name here] to keep them away from the Rangers/Devils/Red Wings/Penguins?

Next year there's Gaborik, Vanek, Heatley, Thornton, Marleau, Stastny, the Sedins, Kessel, Pominville, Bergeron...

Then in 2015, there's Spezza, Toews, Kane, Green, St. Louis, Ryan...

Who's going to keep them from signing elsewhere?

There's "strategy" and there are "tactics." Signing a guy to keep him from somewhere else is a tactic. Signing a guy because he's part of a long term plan is a "strategy".

Reworking the long term plan today because a guy got bought out yesterday is "reactionary."

Again, I think the VLC deal is and will be fine for the duration of it. I think he took somewhat of a discount to come here. I think he has the potential to make the team better. Sure, he's flying without a Catamount for the first time ever, but I think he can overcome that.

Did I mention that MSL is a UFA in 2015? :)

Bravo. *Very* eloquently stated. There's a part of me which would sell my soul (my liver is living testament) for a Cup next season, future seasons be damned. Then, there's the other part that speaks exactly what you and quite a few of our members do. I'm the choir and am *selectively* deaf.

  2. I think the Canucks still had the man power, but an unwillingness to play tough and dirty dug them a big hole early on. Luongo played very good in the first 2 games and Vigneault should have gone with the hot goalie hoping the remaining cast would get their act together. But then Schneider, played pedestrian and should have been replaced by Lu. In fact, IMO the Canucks played decent at least in the 4th game and would have at least prolonged the series if Luongo had played.

    Methinks that Vigneault should go.

  3. Even if the Players Union capitulates and signs up for what the NHL is pushing for, its just a matter of time (end of the next CBA), before its back to the same situation. There is nothing that can stop bad management from ruining anything. I know that the following analysis about Hostess is typically viewed as coming from a leftist point of view, but I feel that it would apply broadly to the path that Bettman is leading.

  4. Spectacular job by all. I am very impressed by the site alone, but moreso the hockey content and ability to let people speak freely. There are very little hostile situations here (some heated debate is welcomed at time, but not when that is the purpose of posting only).

Without Digity, this site would not be. So number one hats off to him.

Yes indeed. I was a lifer at philly.com and although it took me some time, I'm thrilled I can come here.

Without the great posters whoms main objective it to talk hockey, hat trick hats off to all you all.

In the coming year, it would be my hope and wish that we can get more posters that are fans of other teams- ie. diversified. For me it is a selfish wish as I learn more by "seeing" through other fans eyes and also learning more about the players they see everyday for their respective teams.

Amen, and hope to god that radoran comes back. I would much rather see much of the political lunatics spewing their crap go, but they're probably oblivious and they usually stick around just like the kuatos.

  5. agreed they were led by orange jesus though , that kid set the tone with the big hit and shot to the corner in the first minute, damn what a competitor he is.

This image had me pumped for 2008. I hope this is the year we take it all.

  6. While there may be a wee bit o'luck in there, make no mistake. Detroit knows what they're doing when they draft players. They have a very defined strategy and they stick by that gameplan. Bottom line is that they believe the mechanics of hockey, i.e. umbrella or overload PP?, box or diamond on the PK?, how to play within a particular system, etc, they believe all of these things can be taught and mastered by just about any player given enough time.

I would disagree quite a bit there. That is enormous luck. Look at the guys that they drafted before Datsyuk. 9 players were drafted before Datsyuk, and other than one guy who retired early with heart problems, the others did not really do much.

  7. Yes, but that also includes players that will likely be on the Phantoms at the start of the season, if they are on a one-way contract. For example, Walker and Leighton counted against the offseason cap this year. Edit: it also includes players on two way contracts, in proportion to the number of NHL games played in the year prior.

    Thanks. Didn't know that.

  8. 20 games in I have to say that Simmonds has creeped to the top of my list for the most frustrating flyer. Hartnel and Carle are a close second but have seemed to pick up the pace.

I have to agree. I cringe every time Simmonds handles the puck. He seems to be easily knocked off the puck lately.

  9. I always have and always will like Simon Gagne. I was pissed when he was basically let go but that was one of the hard decisions that Homer had to make (and the right one). I am in total agreement with not wanting him to get Lindrosed/Primeaued.

IMO, I don't think Homer had to make the decision to trade Gagne. He got pigeonholed because of his prior move (Meszaros) and was forced to shed his salary and take on the additional deadweight of Walker. It could have been handled much better.

  10. I hope they will keepGustafsson in the team for couple more game May be he turns better option then Lilia and Walker. At least he is not worst then these guys.

IMO, Gus has showcased himself as a better player than Lilja and Walker, even with his height disadvantage. Plus, the cap hit is almost half of Walker

  11. He (JvR) needs solid line mates.

When Schenn comes back JvR and Read would look great flanking him.

Lavy is turning into the Andy Reid of NHL head coaching. (Oh crap did I make a Kauto-esque reference?)

I just don't get some of his moves, i.e., Shelley on a line with Briere? Simmonds in the shootout? Orange ties for all home games?

I've yet to form an opinion of Schenn, and I'm hoping that JVR rights his ship. Its the Simmonds guy that kinda has me scratching. He's got great wheels, but seems easily knocked off the puck. I'm not sure that Read can deliver much more.

  12. Digityman for giving us a place to vent, jammer, flyercanuck, Podein and a whole bunch of others for joining. And a big hello to radoran. Feels like home.
