My opinion is I'd prefer a high pick over yet another early round playoff defeat. That's all. My wording said that, and only that.
I've seen plenty of Flyer playoff appearances. Going back to when we actually made playoff appearances that sort of mattered, we went 4 rounds in 2010. That "experience" got us to 2 rounds the next year. Then 2 the following year. Then we missed the next. Then one and done the year after that. Missed again. One and done again. Missed again. One and done again. Then 2 rounds. Then missed, missed, missed.
Explain to me this playoff experience pay off? When does it actually take? Cause we've done this before, and it didn't.
Right now, we have 1 (one) up and coming potential star player in Michkov. If anyone thinks thats enough to make this team a cup contender, no wonder you thought Hayes and Deangelo would too. We didn't get him by having a playoff round either.
I've seen the mediocre Flyers for way too long. I've drank the orange koolaid until I almost drowned in it. You can get excited over them if you like, I'd get more excited over a talent infusion. I'll bet if they can get Michkov over here, he helps this team way more than yet another Flyer playoff that ends with a loss. Finding him an elite centre would also help way more. Good luck getting that where we pick.
This team is playing over its head, good for them. But when you're supposed to be rebuilding, and your farm team needs an overhaul, and you have one blue chip prospect and maybe another one or two that look like they may be NHL calibre, it just looks to me like the same thing that's been going on here way too long. Not bad enough to draft high end talent, not good enough to win squat. And here we are, right in the middle of the pack and everyones getting excited over "Just make the playoffs and anything can happen". Again. Fool me once, shame on you...fool me decade after decade...
Absolutely DEADLY ACCURATE post! THAT is the honest to God's truth!!

This is their playoffs since Briere didn't bring in an experienced goalie to help Ersson out, if they don't make it they'll probably have their 1st rounder between the 10th pick and 16th pick and then the Flyers will have another 1st round pick late in the first round depending where Florida ends up.
Ranta on waivers seemed odd to pass on.

Sure, I'm not in any way hoping any of Danny's decisions backfire. But, I'll call it out when I dont agree. For the most part, hes been respectable +.

Buddy, you okay?
Seeler's deal isn't even 3% of the salary cap. Zero trade protection after the second year.
Danny recouped the 5th round pick and used the 4th on an actual NHL defensmen who can walk at the end of the season. Belpido isn't better, Andrae is too young Southeran hasn't sniffed a call up. There's starting to be fewer healthy defenseman than there are centermen in the system.
It's fine to not like the moves.
I really don't understand where the hyperbole is coming from though.
The GM added a valuable asset for the future at this trade deadline.
Signed a coach's favorite to a modest contract with outs. He used a fourth pick to show his over-performing team he believes in them.
His moves are far from clueless or wreckless.
The problem here is careless treatment of assets. I want a GM who fights, scrapes, claws every last ounce out of every asset. Not giving them away as casual throw in or getting a 47 year old Dman who has been total crap for a decade for a playoff run that may never happen. Its poor asset management....pure and simple.
Southeran can only be called up on emergency basis only.
I still think Belpiodo is faster and a better option than Johnson.

You mean his old SHL team he never played in the KHL.
I just heard he was going back to Sweden is all.
But the Flyers have already waived him back to LV with Lycksell so they were Hextall draft pieces so i get it...no true allegiance other than being drafted by the Flyers.
Danny too is learning on the job guess we'll have to see where this team they built ends up.
Enjoy the ride.
Yes...he is signing with his old SHL team. Good point about being Hexy picks ..makes sense.

the team constructed i think should be
86 Joel Farabee - 21 Scott Laughton - 71 Tyson Foerster
74 Owen Tippett - 48 Morgan Frost - 11 Travis Konecny
27 Noah Cates - 25 Ryan Poehling - 19 Garnet Hathaway
34 Denis Gurianov - 14 Sean Couturier - 10 Bobby Brink
8 Cam York - 6 Travis Sanheim
5 Egor Zamula - 12 Erik Johnson
18 Marc Staal - 23 Ronnie Attard
33 Samuel Ersson
32 Felix SandströmHey maybe if he can get Ginning going it could be worth it but not getting my hopes up
Not sure how long Drysdale and Risto are out for.
Have you heard the rumor Ginning is planning on signing with his old KHL team after this year?

NO.
I agree. While there might be more suitors at the draft or this summer....I would argue having Markstrom for 2 playoff runs (before a new contract is needed) is substantial. Rumors that Jersey was now willing to take the full cap hit instead of the Flames retaining make it more of a head scratcher.

Danny is entering dangerous territory. Throwing away draft picks like they are suckers at the greeting bowl of a business. Its just not responsible. Quite possible Belpido is better than Johnson at this juncture of their careers. Just call up a Phantom! Johnson is WASHED!! I consider Southeran a respectable prospect and he was selected a round later than we gave up for Mr.Washed and the playoff run that may or may not happen.
Did I mention Danny overpaying in term and salary to a 30 year old defensemen, THEN throwing in the Homer/Fletch no trade clause?? Bad flashbacks.

Belpiedo has proven to be serviceable if they needed a body. I get not wanting to wreck young careers by putting them in high pressure situations if they are deemed not ready...but this is counter productive at best, downright stupid at worst. Stop treating assets like throw away crap!
-
I was OK with keeping Seeler, simply because he play was worth more than the 3rd rd pick he would have sent back...
HOWEVER...I had some preconceived cut off points with Seeler. The term was MAX 2 years and the cap hit was MAX 2.2 mill per year. Danny exceeded these cut off points, making this a VERY bad idea.
To much salary and way to much term considering his age and skill set. Danny, as a team builder took a step back in my mind...makes me question if he's ready for this. Crucial error here.
For this to be somewhat salvageable...Seeler must play as the defensive minded stalwart on the 2nd pairing AND be the primary short handed Dman for the life of this deal. I do think the effort will always be there...BUT, will the body be willing considering his style of play?? What does a 33-34 year old Seeler play like?

Scott Laughton has tallied 12 points in the last 11 games (5g,7a). He leads the club in points and ranks second in goals since February 8.
TRADE HIM NOW HIS VALUE WILL NEVER BE HIGHER!!!
He really was due for this. His shooting % has always been double digits and he has poked along at 5-6% all year. The odds say the Goals would come.

I think you missed the point I was trying to make.
The players are playing to win. They aren't waiting for some boy to save them.
The attitude I've seen seems to say they think they're good enough. I think Jonesy remembers that from his playing days.
I think that's what he's saying. I don't think he's lying to anyone about anything.
Now, he could be withholding information. I don't view that as the same.
The only way the Flyers can truly tank is to convert talent into other assets, like trading away half your defense for instance. They have a strict disciplinary coach who will not accept half hearted effort. The players would not fall in line with a tank anyways, they are competitors who have a rep to uphold. Its management's decision to deplete the talent pool enough that they can't swim.

Working nights....glad I missed this stinker!
Fairly obvious Flyers need a legit NHL Goalie to split time with Errson.
Just spit balling, but here is my idea....
IF Walker and Seeler don't get moved as a pair (best case 1st round pick...yes plz)
Move Seeler for a legit tender instead of a 3rd rd pick (waste)...
Kaapo Kahkonen is 27, had respectable stats with the Wild, stinky stats with the Sharks (to be expected).
Seeler and Sandstrom for Kahkonen?? Does that get it done? He's 27...still has upside...Finnish (rad)...

Danny Briere is an idiot. This is the easiest trade deadline he will ever have to deal with and he's going to screw it up.
Gee thats doom and gloom. I'll wait till he actually messes up before any pitchforks come out. The last few deals for Dmen did not help his cause, which is no fault of his...but overcome...beat the odds...

And that's why I'm more than willing to see Seeler moved for a 3rd - because he'll re-sign to a higher number and he'll fall off a cliff. As well, and I'm sure people are gonna go nuts when I say this, but guys like Seeler are a dime a dozen, especially at the trade deadline.
And as mentioned, Ginning is sitting in Lehigh Valley and he does the same thing that Seeler does.
Just read Ginning is planning to go back to his former KHL team in Sweden next year...big blow!!

Something tells me Laughton ends up in Vegas. They just put Eichel and Stone onto IR. They're going to save some bucks to make a move and acquiring a guy like Laughton would be such a Vegas thing to do. And wouldn't it be something if David Edstrom was the return (and yes, they've given away top prospects for players, especially when they have term or Vegas signs them to an extension).
I'd almost consider buying out Atkinson at this point and run with Konecny, Tippett, Foerster and Hathaway as the RWs. The LWs could be Farabee, Lyksell, Cates and Deslauriers. I keep Brink and Tuomaala away from this and let them run out the stretch in Lehigh Valley to see if they can dominate.
The Flyers took a huge step this year and they stepped up in the face of adversity and everything that's going on with Carter Hart. But you can see they're running out of gas. They still don't have enough horses and that's perfectly fine. This isn't an overnight fix. But there's good pieces there. Let Briere add better pieces. And they've got cap space they're willing to weaponize too.
And if Briere knocks it out of the park with returns on Walker and Seeler (and I think that's what Briere is pushing for), that will speed things up even further. I would love to see if Briere could pull getting either Isaac Howard (Tampa Bay) or Rutger McGroarty (Winnipeg) in a return for Walker and Seeler.
I have heard McGroarty is off limits, but ya never know till you try. Flyers are in trade limbo till Flames move Hanfin and or Tanev. Until they are moved, Flyers are not the top dogs selling Dmen.
The pressure NHL GMs are under to win should play right into the Flyers plans. A lot of GMs with their jobs on the line right now. Guys that don't care about prospects or picks that may or may not be there if they are fired.

With Torts behind the bench, you get a few things that were missing the past decade(s).
1)Accountability...bust your ass every shift OR a public shaming in the form of being benched is coming your way.
2)Honest, unfiltered comments to the press instead of cliches.
3)Ice time goes according to effort, not cap hit.
4)If things are not clicking, he will switch things up on hunches...which are right more often than wrong.
5)You know your not getting out coached. To experienced to be taken advantage of.

Drysdale is a lot like some of our current and past young players, he has missed a lot of games due to injury and he is behind in his development. He has already had two major injuries including a torn labrum, which kept him out a full season. Not sure if it was the same shoulder that was injured tonight. I just hope he isn’t a snake bitten player who’s made of peanut brittle and always gets hurt. We already had more than our share…Lindros, Bourdon, Morin, Patrick,Allison and O’Brien. I know the Flyers were limited in the teams they could trade with, but considering Patrick and all the rest ,I’d be wary of trading for a guys who’s had two major injuries right off the bat. It seems that guys who get injured early on are always injured down the line.
I'm sure Danny did his due diligence and shopped Gauthier to every GM in the League. The problem lies in the old boys GM network...these guys all talk, and with each call he exposes his position of weakness.
Thus, opposing GMs smell blood in the water and the offers go down, despite the obvious elite skill of the player being shopped. Throw in how unprofessional Gauthier and his reps looked giving the Flyers the cold shoulder, this could have given other GMs pause for thought also.
In the end, Danny did his best from an obvious position of weakness. He simply had to accept a few warts for a top 10 prospect....in this case, the warts include size and injury concerns.

The guy who leads the league in shot-blocking - and has all year - is hardly a "dime a dozen" player. Giving him away for a 3R would prove incompetence. Thankfully Jones and Briere aren't incompetent.
We have not even discussed how Seeler is THE best short handed defenseman on the Flyers. The pk is ranked 2nd in the League. What does that unit look like without his effort and hustle...answer...not as good.
