I remember it like it was yesterday. Especially the series clinching game. I was a 5th grader and we had to attend a 50th anniversary celebration for the grandparents of my neighbor across the street. It was being held at a hotel in Philly. Not wanting to miss the game my dad brought our brand new SONY Walkman radio. He also brought a single earpiece so he could listen relatively unnoticed. He looked like a secret service agent with his suit and single earpiece. I’m guessing some thought he was hotel security since we were fairly unknown among the guests. He kept coming over to me telling me how the scored yet again and we both celebrated quietly together knowing we were moving on to the next round.Sadly my dad has been gone for 20 years now but this is one of my favorite memories of the 23 years I got to spend with him.

I don't remember Lindbergh's personality off-ice, if the whole driving a Porsche into a church was wholly unexpected or not. I do remember being shocked as Hell, stunned like the rest of the Philly faithful.
The sad thing about Pelle is that he was not a big drinker at all. He did love fast cars but he almost never drank. Unfortunately the team was in a party mood as they had just completed a brutal stretch of games and they won 10 in a row. Keenan had given them the night off. Pelle who didn't normally drink decided to join in the festivities (some reports noted that because he didnt usually drink that he didnt know how to handle the alcohol). First they went to Bennigans and had a bunch of drinks there, then they went to the Flyers practice facility which at the time had after hours clubs there. They partied till 4:30 AM or so and then Pelle wanted to go get breakfast. He was indeed legally intoxicated, was driving way too fast, and failed to negotiate a curve and crashed into the side of a school. The part that got him was the stairwell that he drove into. If it was just a wall he would have sidewiped and lived to tell about it. But what killed him was the car getting wedged in the stairwell.
It is a extremely sad story and just like an air crash there were many factors that all a happened in a chain of events that led to it. The fast cars were his personality. The drinking was not.
In the thumbnail of this video you can see the 5 step staircase that he hit and which led to his death.

We all need to absorb the significance in your statement , for the first time in decades the Flyers are actually winning due to our goaltending and defense instead of losing because of it. We are being outplayed and actually winning. In the past we would outplay the opponents and outshoot them 45-15 and we would lose the game. I cant count many series in the past 30 years we lost, due to bad goaltending and having a defense of maybe three skilled defensemen and three immobile stiffs. So many times we would spend most of the game in the opponents end , bombarding the net with quality shots, outshooting them by a wide margin, only to end up losing due to a cheap goal or a glaring defensive give away. 50 foot slapper, through the 5 hole, Hexy, cheap rebound, Beezer, etc. Think about the goal for Chicago in 2010, has there ever been a weaker Cup winning goal in history ? It's incredible and a long time coming , that we finally have a quality lineup from the goaltending out.
Thank you for expounding on my initial thoughts. This is exactly what was going through my mind when I made this post but did express it overtly. It is literally like you read my mind though.

Well it wasn’t pretty but we’ll take it. The Devils weren’t complaining when they won tight low scoring games on the way to 3 cups. It’s fun to be on the other end of things, finally, especially seeing the other team give up a backbreaking cheap goal for once!

I once was lost, but now am found... I've missed you guys!
Just in time to watch the Flyers finish off the Habs and then probably take on the Islanders.
Wow! Welcome back Ted! I’m pretty sure you were featured in our “gone but not forgotten” discussion a few years ago.

Yes best potential since Pelle IMHO.

I would love to see Pittsburgh get this kid! To see Flyers fans moan and groan will be music to my ears!
Of course you would

There should be no * that diminishes the accomplishment because like everyone said it will be played under the same conditions as everyone else and will have won 4 best of 7 series. When the Devils won in 1995 after the lockout shortened season did anyone crap on their accomplishments due to the lockout shortened season, was there an * because less games were played? Heck no! In this case we played more games during the regular season and the playoff format is the only thing that is altered. It is not altered in any way though that makes it any easier. Even the #1 seed was not gifted to the Flyers they had to fight tooth and nail for it and earned their way to it.
If they do win this year, the only * we will recall is how disrupted life as we know it has been.

This is the best top 4 we have seen since Pronger/Carle Kimmo/Coburn.
Really hard to play against a team that can roll out combos like that.
Once they get Raffl and Oskar back they may be unstoppable....we'll no one is unstoppable but they will be a force to handle.
Especially if they can ever get Giroux, Jake and Coots scoring.
I’m as a big a Flyers fan as they come but I’m generally pretty pessimistic about the team based on their track record for breaking my heart with either running into a buzzsaw (Oilers, Pens, Hawks, or Wings) or making breathtakingly bad screw ups and allowing soft goals at the worst possible times. There is something VERY different about this team and I have confidence in them that I literally never had in them before in the 36 years I have followed the Flyers. If we don’t win it this year we are going to bring home the 3 foot high 50 lb piece or hardware soon boys, it’s coming. This homegrown goalie, Defense and coach are the real deal and we look as hard to play against as I have ever seen in my life. I’m pinching myself right now just to make sure this is real. Good luck to us in the playoffs and...
LETS GO FLYERS!

OMG ..Yes! Remember when he chased down Chris Chelios! Retaliation after Chelios destroyed Brian Propp....Damn ... I hated Chelios ever since....
Brian Propp is on record saying he hated Chellios ever since too! I don’t remember this moment as fondly as the first fight in 1987 as we were about to be eliminated. -

Now that she is 15 you can explain to her that she is the cause of our suffering 10 years later.BTW speaking of kids, during the discussion we got to meet the newly minted Gavin Giroux. Also my firstborn was 4 months old during the Flyers Bruins game 7 and my wife and I decided we would go down to the city and enjoy game 7 with the people. We couldn't get a baby sitter so we took my son in the car seat carrier into Chickies and Pete South Philly for the game. He slept most of the time and was unfazed by the bedlam that ensued when the clock went to 0:00!
