The 2022 NHL Draft Lottery drawing will be held May 10 (6:30 p.m. ET; ESPN, ESPN+, SN, SN NOW, TVAS).

The lottery, for teams that miss the Stanley Cup Playoffs, will set the order for the first 16 selections of the 2022 NHL Draft, which will be held at Bell Centre in Montreal on July 7-8.

Beginning this season there will be a limit on the total number of selections (10) a team participating in the lottery can move up in the event it wins one of the lottery draws, a change announced by the NHL on March 23, 2021. Only the top 11 seeds will be eligible to receive the No. 1 selection in the 2022 draft.

The odds for the first draw of the 2022 NHL Draft Lottery have been adjusted following the addition of the Seattle Kraken as the League's 32nd team this season.

They are as follows:

1. 18.5 percent
2. 13.5 percent
3. 11.5 percent
4. 9.5 percent
5. 8.5 percent
6. 7.5 percent
7. 6.5 percent
8. 6.0 percent
9. 5.0 percent
10. 3.5 percent
11. 3.0 percent
12. 2.5 percent
13. 2.0 percent
14. 1.5 percent
15. 0.5 percent
16. 0.5 percent

The odds for the remaining teams will increase on a proportionate basis for the second draw, based on which team wins the first draw.

The Buffalo Sabres, who finished with the worst record in the NHL last season and had the best odds, won the lottery and selected defenseman Owen Power with the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NHL Draft.

It was the first time since the Sabres in 2018 that the team that finished last in the standings won the lottery.

NHL Central Scouting will release its final rankings of the top North American and International skaters and goalies for the 2022 draft on May 5.

Among the top North American skaters are forwards Shane Wright of Kingston (Ontario Hockey League), Logan Cooley of the USA Hockey National Team Development Program Under-18 team, and Matthew Savoie and Conor Geekie of Winnipeg (Western Hockey League), and defenseman Pavel Mintyukov of Saginaw (OHL).

The top International skaters include forwards Joakim Kemell of JYP in Finland, Juraj Slafkovsky of TPS in Finland and forward Danila Yurov of Magnitogorsk in Russia.

The NHL Scouting Combine will be held at KeyBank Center and LECOM Harborcenter in Buffalo from May 29-June 4. The event will allow the top draft prospects to meet and work out for all 32 NHL teams.

The first day of free agency will be July 13.

I really think Montreal will get the #1 pick because the draft will be held in Montreal this year and that will make it exciting. They also have the best chances with the lottery so we shall see.

So some Tomfu ckery might be going on you say not Gary Buttman...

Buttman has had his share of that for sure. I am always in the belief that things work out in these weird ways to benefit ratings, media, and of course money as well. If Montreal gets the #1 pick that means the place will be packed for sure and not only that the area will be watching and buying beverages which means more money being spent. I always looks at things that way.

Season removed from Stanley Cup Final appearance, Montreal Canadiens win NHL draft lottery

The Montreal Canadiens secured the first overall pick in the NHL draft lottery on Tuesday, becoming the first team since 1985 to host the draft and own the top pick.

It marks the first time in 42 years that the Canadiens, who made the Stanley Cup Final last season, will select first overall, having last selected forward Doug Wickenheiser with the top pick in 1980.

"It's a very exciting outcome for us. Our fans I'm sure will be thrilled, especially with the draft being held in Montreal, to have all of that anticipation and excitement leading into it," Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes said.

The NHL draft is scheduled for July 7-8.

The New Jersey Devils won the second lottery drawing, earning the second overall pick. It marks the third time in the past six years the Devils will have selected first or second overall.

The NHL's 16 non-playoff teams were ranked by worst points percentage in the standings to the highest. Here's how the draft lottery played out, including each team's odds to secure the first overall pick before the draft:

1. Montreal Canadiens (18.5%); 2. New Jersey Devils (8.5%); 3. Arizona Coyotes (13.5%); 4. Seattle Kraken (11.5%); 5. Philadelphia Flyers (9.5%); 6. Columbus Blue Jackets (7.5%, transferred from Chicago); 7. Ottawa Senators (6.5%); 8. Detroit Red Wings (6.0%); 9. Buffalo Sabres (5.0%); 10. Anaheim Ducks (3.5%); 11. San Jose Sharks (3.0%); 12. Columbus Blue Jackets (2.5%); 13. New York Islanders (2.0%); 14. Winnipeg Jets (1.5%); 15. Vancouver Canucks (0.5%); 16. Buffalo Sabres (0.5%, transferred from the Vegas Golden Knights).

The Sabres acquired the Golden Knights' first-round pick in the Jack Eichel trade. The Blue Jackets acquired the Blackhawks' first-round pick in the Seth Jones trade. Both picks were lottery protected, and the conditions were met for the picks to be transferred this season rather than in 2023.

This year's NHL draft is widely considered not to have a "generational talent" at the top of the board.

"You don't have a [Connor] McDavid or [Auston] Matthews in this draft, but there are very few years you have a McDavid or a Matthews in the draft," Kraken general manager Ron Francis said.

Shane Wright of Kingston in the Ontario Hockey League, a solid two-way center, is projected to go first overall. Center Logan Cooley of the USA Hockey National Team Development Program narrowed the gap between himself and Wright during the season, although NHL Central Scouting had Wright atop its final ranking.

The other two top prospects are Slovakian Olympians: Winger Juraj Slafkovsky of TPS of Liiga, Finland's top professional league; and defenseman Simon Nemec, of Nitra in the Slovak Extraliga.

The NHL changed its draft rules last season, reducing the number of lottery draws from three to two to ensure that the team with the worst regular-season record drafts no lower than third overall. It also added a rule this season where a team can only move up a maximum of 10 spots if it wins one of the lotteries.

In the drawing that determined the No. 2 drafting position, the Devils had the fourth-greatest percentage likelihood among the remaining clubs eligible for selection (10.4%).

"There are some clubs who think it's important that the teams that are struggling most get the most help. There are other teams that think there's nothing wrong with the present system at all," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said last season.

"Our competitive balance is so extraordinary that some clubs feel that the difference between a team that misses the playoffs and a team that really misses the playoffs really isn't all that great. In order to try and reconcile those competing views, we thought maybe a little bit of a tweak [was necessary]."

Additionally, the NHL passed a rule starting this season: No team will be able to move up the draft board by winning a lottery more than two times in a five-year period.

The Canadiens and Devils are on the clock.

A year after a trip to the 2021 Stanley Cup Final, the Montreal Canadiens won the 2022 NHL Draft Lottery, giving them the first overall pick. It should make for a festive 2022 NHL Draft atmosphere, as the event takes place on July 7 and 8 at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

While the New Jersey Devils “settled” for the second pick of the 2022 NHL Draft, this continues their run of lottery luck. They went from the fifth-best odds (8.5%) to the second overall pick.

Both the Canadiens and Devils get great chances to boost their futures after painful 2021-22 seasons.

Time will tell if the Canadiens pick Shane Wright first overall. We could also see a team like, say, the Flyers trade a high first-rounder to try to make a more immediate splash.

The Devils discussed possibly trading their first-rounder, as well, but does that change now that they’re at No. 2 overall? That will hinge on how they view the draft class. Also note that we received closure on the conditions for picks involved in the Jack Eichel and Seth Jones trades.

More on the 2022 NHL Draft Lottery, and some top prospects

Here were the original odds for the 2022 NHL Draft Lottery

Montreal Canadiens 18.5%
Arizona Coyotes 13.5%
Seattle Kraken 11.5%
Philadelphia Flyers 9.5%
New Jersey Devils 8.5%
*Chicago Blackhawks 7.5%
Ottawa Senators 6.5%
Detroit Red Wings 6.0%
Buffalo Sabres 5.0%
Anaheim Ducks 3.5%
San Jose Sharks 3.0%
Columbus Blue Jackets 2.5%
New York Islanders 2.0%
Winnipeg Jets 1.5%
Vancouver Canucks 0.5%
**Vegas Golden Knights 0.5%

Two notes on those Blackhawks and Golden Knights first-round picks:

* Under the terms of a July 23, 2021 trade, Chicago will transfer its 1st-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft to Columbus if it is not a top 2 pick. If it becomes a top 2 pick as a result of the Draft Lottery, Chicago will retain the pick and instead transfer to Columbus its 1st-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.

** Under the terms of a Nov. 4, 2021 trade, Vegas will transfer its 1st-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft to Buffalo if it is not a top 10 pick. If it becomes a top 10 pick as a result of the Draft Lottery, Vegas will retain the pick and instead transfer to Buffalo its 1st-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.

Kingston Frontenacs center Shane Wright is expected to be the No. 1 overall pick, but there are plenty of other top prospects who could be impact players. Matthew Savoie, Logan Cooley, Brad Lambert, Šimon Nemec, Seamus Casey, David Jiříček, and Olympic breakout star Juraj Slafkovský could all hear their names called early on.

Will Scouch of McKeen’s Hockey gave us his top 32 prospects for the 2022 NHL Draft back in December. We’ll have an update and a mock draft as we get closer to draft day.
