hf101 Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 There is a bit of paranoia in Canada as they plan to phase out European goalies in the CHL.According to the Toronto Star’s Damien Cox there are several factors that reflects a fear that Canadian goaltending has been on the decline. As Cox explains:All three finalists for the NHL’s Vezina Trophy this season are Europeans, while a Canadian hasn’t been the first goalie selected in the NHL draft in five years. Of the four Memorial Cup finalists, only Halifax, the eventual champion, started a Canadian goalie, and Russia’s Andrei Makarov of the Saskatoon Blades was the tournament’s outstanding goalie. The top goalie in the CHL this season, meanwhile, was from the Czech Republic. The new CHL initiative states that if a team wants to select a goaltender in the 2013 CHL import draft, then they’ll only be able to do so in the first round. Will the new ruling lower the quality of the talent pool of young goaltenders looking to play in the NHL? Quote

I understand the need to protect the goaltending depth in Canada, or quality of.Kind of like jobs going overseas except it's actually the opposite they are coming here and taking jobs.Something to think about. flyercanuck Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 @hf101Not sure where it went wrong but Canadian goaltending has been on the decline. Finland and the US seem to produce the best these days. Maybe Canada should have a "developmental" league and only allow Canadians in junior? Quote
blocker Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 Funny how things change. Seems like it was just yesterday that Quebec produced lots of good goalie prospects.Goaltending is way better now, than in the past. Whoever has the task of developing premier goalies in Canada (or anywhere else) has a hell of a tough job. Quote
