AVALANCHE F MCLEOD SUSPENDED FIVE-GAMES FOR BOARDING

Colorado Avalanche forward Cody McLeod has been suspended five-games for his hit on Red Wings defenceman Niklas Kronwall during Detroit's 4-2 win on Thursday night.

McLeod, who was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct in the first period for boarding and Kronwall was taken from the ice on a stretcher.

After the game, the Red Wings told the media that Kronwall had sustained a concussion.

  I have to disagree with Shanny on this one.

 Kronwall said himself that the injury was his fault for the way that he turned with McLeod barreling in on him.

  McLeod actually went to the Wings locker rom and made piece with Kronwall.

 I think this is a case of overreaction to the hits earlier in the week to Boyle by Lapierre and Kaleta whacking Jack Johnson in the head. I have never been a McLeod fan but this was his first offense and IMHO a borderline one at that. A game or two, meh, okay I guess, but five? Overreaction.

@yave1964,

I think it is a classic example of penalizing based on the result instead of the action.  I think the Grabner hit on Gerbe was far more egregious than this hit.  It seems like if the boards were involved (see this hit and the Lapierre hit on Boyle, 5 games each) then the suspension is stiffer.  Open ice hits only get 2 games.  We'll see how many games Garbutt gets for his open ice hit on Penner.

I am betting Garbutt gets at least 10 for his shot on Penner. That  was a charge/leap/flying elbow to the head shot. What Garbutt did was a text book example of a dirty hit.....

He was offered that in person hearing. That gives Shanny the option to suspend him for more than five games. I don't believe he will get more than five games. Past suspensions have only been for two games for the similar type it. We'll see if he suspends based on the results of the play and not the action.
