The Colorado Avalanche have had a rough start to the season and it just continues although they have won 5 of the last 7.

Colorado's injury list:

Jesse Winchester - Concussion - No set return date

Brad Stuart - Hamstring - Possible return mid-December (no set time table)

John Mitchell - Leg - 7 to 10 days

Dennis Everberg - Shoulder - No set return date

Patrick Bordeleau - Back - No set return date

Jamie McGinn - Back - Evaluated and may need back surgery - no return date - could be season ending

Ryan Wilson - Shoulder - Surgery Out for season

Semyon Varlamov - Groin - Could return Thursday, December 4th against Calgary Flames

Marc-Andre Cliche - Unknown - At least 2 weeks

Ben Street - hand - expected to miss 5-7 days but will see hand specialist on Monday 12/1/14

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the constant injuries Colorado has called up:

Ben Street (now injured)

Andrew Agozzino - Lake Erie

Tomas Vincour - Avalanche

Karl Storelly - Lake Erie

Calvin Pickard - Avalanche

Sami Aittokallio - Lake Erie

Zach Redmond - Avalanche

Paul Carey - Lake Erie

Now they will add -

Colin Smith

Michael Sgarbossa

Smith will join Agozzino and Pickard this season to play their first career NHL game.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Patrick Roy and Joe Sakic will speak regarding which goalie they will be sending to Lake Erie later today - Reto Berra was signed to a 3 year deal, if he is sent down, he will need to clear waivers in order to play in Lake Erie. Calvin Picard has appeared in 2 relief games and won chances to start in 3 consecutive games since Varlamov's second injury. There is a good shot the Avs could be ok with taking a chance at losing Berra.

Calvin Pickard will get his 2nd career start against the Montreal Canadians, in game 1 he faced 36 shots and stopped 33, PK Subban had two of the 3 goals. 2 of 3 goals also came just seconds after a penalty kill by Montreal, that was Pickard's 1st career start. Monday will now mark his 4th career start, 2 of 4 to the same eastern team, which is rare for an AHL/Backup NHL goalie.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Patrick Roy stated in his press conference after the morning skate 11/30/14, "The defense has played well since switching the system.Especially guys like Holden." Roy has confidence in his current D, his new goalie and he took exception to Landeskog and MacKinnon outstanding play of late. Colorado expects to play well against Montreal who has gone 6-3-1 in their last 10 games.

Roy did not mention it in the presser, could not confirm it myself, however, I would expect Berra to be since Varly is still on IR, have Berra on the roster would not allow the Avs to carry Smith and Sgarbossa. I think Varly will not be dressed in the game against Montreal, I think once he is activated we will see Berra or Pickard back in Lake Erie. (Could be wrong, but logically it does not see like that is likely to have Varly on the bench.)

"We'll see from there," Roy said. "We want to be cautious and make sure he's 100 percent before he's playing."

So Pickard, 22, will get his third consecutive start with Reto Berra dressing as the backup. Pickard has a 3-1-0 record in his past four games with a 1.41 goals-against average and .955 save percentage.

Glad to see Scarbosa finally recalled. I thought he was a perfect fit to replace McGinn. Hope he sticks.

It would be nice to see Sqarbossa get a shot and stick, he certainly has talent and a lot of it.

I was going off the yahoo fantasy blurb which stated that Varly would be the back up in Montreal, they have since updated and confirmed Berra backing up Pickard. They also state that Varly is a good bet to start the Thursday game.

Varlamov is speculated to start against Calgary, however, Roy is being cautious with Varly. He has stated over and over that his status is not 100% until he is 100%, so that could change, but does not seem likely since Varlamov will have, "practice" with the team. Which Roy said is key to his return, and since his status has been changed 4-5 times since the injury, I do not think that I will say anything 100% about Semyon until it is confirmed he will play. Haha
