Don't know if people know this yet, but the State of Michigan and the Federal Government of Canada are partnering up to build a new bridge. The existing bridge is really tough to cross, just due to pure volume.....even with the Detroit/Windsor tunnel working around the clock. In short, it's by far the busiest border crossing between the USA and Canada. It has been determined that a another bridge is necessary. Canada's Prime Minister Stephan Harper called Michigan Governor Rick Snyder yesterday with a naming proposal for the new international crossing. Harper (a HUGE hockey fan) has suggested "The Gordie Howe International Bridge"......how cool is that?

When you think about it, Howe is perfect...here we have a Canadian icon, who spent his entire NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings.....so both countries have a reason to be proud of this choice. A very fitting tribute to one of the greatest players to ever lace up skates!!

What a great way to honour one of the best careers ever. He played 33 seasons total, a staggering number when you think about it, the average career is probably around 5 or 6 years.....just flat out amazing. 6 time NHL MVP....you know you are an icon when your nickname is "Mr.Hockey".  Gordie represents everything a bridge should be, strength....stability....very proud our PM went this route, very cool indeed.

Personally, I was hoping my name caught on...."The Bob Probert Suspension Bridge".....LOL!

@yave1964  When you think about it, what a huge honour in having an International crossing named after you. It's the perfect call, cause Gordie was synonymous with the region, really, could not have picked anyone who would be so perfect to both sides of the border. In the top 4 all time for Canadian hockey players, joining Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr and Mario Lemieux.

The only thing that saddens me about this is the fact that Gordie won't be able to appreciate it. I wish it had been done when he still had his mind at full capacity, and maybe could have even attended an opening ceremony.

Windsor and Detroit have recognized the need for a new bridge for way over a decade. The whole situation hopelessly dragged on forever....billionaire Matty Maroon, the owner of the current Amabassador Bridge, want's to twin his bridge, but both Government's would no allow it. Matty has spent well over 50 million (not exaggerating) to try and get a court to see things his way. So yeah, Gordie being robbed of the dedication ceremony etc...that's all on the greed and ignorance of Maroon. Rich S.O.B if there ever was one.

Also interesting to note that Canada had to make an exception in this case, as by law they aren't supposed to name something like this after a person who is still alive. That's how much Mr. Hockey means to Canada. It's an excellent choice, really. And not just for his play. He has been a great ambassador for the sport, and while he was able a regular visitor to the Red Wings dressing room, where he is still revered even by young players who weren't even born when he was playing or never saw him play.

Now let's just hope when it's done we don't see a daily Howe Bridge Hat Trick: a toll, an arrest, and a collision. ;-)

The major backer of this bridge from the Canadian side is Prime Minister Harper. He has total control in Ottawa with a majority gov't....so he can basically any law he wants and ram it through the House of Commons....so an opposition party might protest (political suicide...lol, imagine the NDP hate Gordie Howe"....LMAO) but could never muster any real defense.

The cool part is, Gordie gets to find about it ....which is awesome. We all know Gordie won't be around forever (God Bless that man!) so the fact he gets to hear about this and be able to soak up the ramifications......it's heartwarming....it really is.

@jammer2 What's the reverse of the orange wave of 2011? That would be one of those angry looking photos of Mulcair with the caption "This man hates Gordie Howe." Think Kim Campbell. Lol

I say that tongue in cheek, but it probably would have a similar effect to that, and rightly so, I'd say. Even if he may not completely grasp it, let's give Mr. Hockey his roses while he can smell them.

@ScottM  It is quite funny when you think about it, a politician swarmy enough to debate the Gordie Howe naming....LOL...what a sight that would be....only Hudak would be that stupid...and he's retired!

Two other possibilities: a drunk Elizabeth May or Jim Prentice simply being arrogant. Lol
