Broken Goalies

What is going on around here??

Goalies dropping like flies left n right.

From the elite (Jonathan Quick) to the journeyman backup (Anton Khudobin) and everything in between.

Seems goalies are a special target for the injury bug this year

Is this just a freak thing going on this year, or is there some pattern, some underlying reason for all these goaltenders going down with injury?

Tuuka Rask, Jonathan Quick, Jeff Zatkoff, Mike Smith (yea, yea, he is injured EVERY year but still...), and the latest, Sens goalie Andrew Hammond (pictured above), just to name a few.

In and out of lineups, day to day, or flat out on IR, goalies don't seem to be safe.

Now, more than ever, it's a time for backups who always felt they never got a real opportunity in the NHL to step up their game.

Same goes for prospects (Malcolm Subban, Linus Ullmark for example) or even guys who had to be dusted off the shelf and be given shots once again (Peter Budaj, Anders Lindback).

At this rate, unless the replacement goalies stick and do well, scoring may actually increase and even pedestrian type skaters may see career years do to the marked drop in regular NHL goalies available!

Hmmm...perhaps even the Vezina this year comes down to attrition....the LEAST hurt guy who had the best numbers wins it!

Hah...didn't think of it this way for Toronto.

Addition by injury.

Exactly. The best thing that could happen to the Leafs right now would be Andersen and Enroth on LTIR and the team signing Halak and recalling Sparks. :)
