hobie
Freddy Andersen- was great thru most of the season, weak at the onset and toward the end, his great was exactly what TO needed Tyler Bozak- slow start but statistically ended in familiar territory, hope TO tries to resign Connor Brown- RW on a crowded RW team, regressed statistically but a player who leaves it all on the ice Connor Carrick- hard to judge because Babs doesn't like/play him Jake Gardiner- risk taker who's benefits far outweigh his mistakes, still TO's best d-man Ron Hainsey- PKer extraordinaire but lack of speed limits his effectiveness, almost an attribute when playing 5v5 with Rielly Zach Hymen- constant energy, good forechecker but basically useless with the puck as deployed, maybe more suited to 3rd or 4th line Nazem Kadri- is evolving year by year but probably a better winger than center, needs better players to be successful but who doesn't Kapanen- speed galore, breakaway a game but only scored 7 goals, just an energy player now but still time to improve Leo- entertainment value waning, value mostly in Babs' eyes only Marleau- very workmanlike but rarely raises his level, maybe he can't. Season was salvaged when Marner joined his line, an overly expensive vet on the decline Marner- super star everything but consistency, entering his prime, 80 points this year Martin- bad signing and finally Babs accepts it, probably a Babs endorsed signing Leivo- a curious resigning Matthews- ultimate scorer and good defensive option, not a dominate presence yet but soon maybe, very injury prone this last year McElhinney- exactly what's needed from a backup Moore- Babs didn't like, not sure why Nylander- dynamic periphery player needs to risk life and limb and go to the opposition's net occasionally, great shot so shoot more, future center Plekanec- should return to Mtl. Polak- only real physical d-man but little value otherwise Rielly- capable of brilliance but more often mediocre, shackled by Babs? JVR- too happy only scoring, don't resign Zaitsev- sophomore regression at 25, is that a thing or a 1 year wonder, to be determined TO compiled the best record in it's history so this team was a success story and it may improve more yet. TO's average age 28.1, league average 27.8 TO's GF 270, league average 244 TO's GA 230, league average 244 TO's PP opportunities 224 and PP success 25%, league average 250 and 20.18 Anyway, it was a fun year and maybe next year greater success in the playoffs is in the cards. BluPuk
The following are the opinions of this author only .... Andersen - not at the level we need to become a serious contender. Bozak - has to go. Leafs will never amount to a hill of beans with Bozak as its #2 centre. We have one true defenceman only - Reilly. Zach Hymen??? Better check your spelling there .... Matthews. I very much don't like what I saw in the last playoff series. He was non-existant. It's very concerning. Total lack of mental toughness as a team. Team has no ID and no character. Oh, and a squeaky new rookie GM.
hobie
I'm thinking that Tavares will go a ling way to providing the mental toughness that TO lacked last year. I believe he might be the true leader TO has been missing however it's hard to be sure because of the teams he's played for in the past.

Somewhere, somehow they need to get their blueline straightened out. (Happy summer to all!)
