  12. Pat Verbeek is the all-time leader in penalty minutes (2905) amongst the members of the NHL 500+ goals club.

  14. So we've still got 78 years left to go in the 21st century, but which NHL players so far, do you think will make ESPN Sports Century's list of the 100 Greatest Athletes of the 21st Century. ESPN chose only 6 NHL players for the 20th century, since hockey is the # 4 sport in the U.S. behind Baseball, Football, and Basketball, so I'm guessing they will choose 6 NHL players at the end of this century as well. In my opinion the are only 4 NHL players who make the list right now, the other 2 will have to come from the late 21st century. So these are the four NHL players so far, that I think will make ESPN's 100 Greatest Athlete's of the 21st Century: # 1 - Alex Ovechkin # 2 - Sidney Crosby # 3 - Patrick Kane # 4 - Steven Stamkos And just like the 20th century list, no goaltenders will make the 21st century list, and no sidekicks will make it either - only the best of the best. They will choose Alex Ovechkin, but not Nicklas Backstrom as well. They will choose Sidney Crosby, but not Evgeni Malkin as well. They will choose Patrick Kane, but not Johnathan Toews as well. A lot of hockey experts say that Bobby Orr is the greatest player ever because of his skills, not Wayne Gretzky, but Gretzky is called the greatest because he scored the most goals, assists, and points. I think Sidney Crosby might get chosen over Alex Ovechkin as the greatest of the 21st Century. Sidney Crosby is on his way to reaching his 1000th assist, while Alex Ovechkin might retire with under 1000 assists. Plus Crosby won more Cups. But I'm hoping Alex Ovechkin is chosen number one. Most of us won't live to see the end of the century list though. ESPN Sports Century 100 Greatest Athletes of the 20th Century (1900-1999) ESPN.com: Top N. American athletes of the century https://www.espn.com/sportscentury/athletes.html Sports Century - Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SportsCentury Baseball, Football, Basketball, and Hockey players combined, made up 60% of ESPN's list of the 100 Greatest Athletes of the 20th Century. 1. MLB 23% 2. NFL 20% 3. NBA 11% 4. NHL 6% NHL (6) 01. # 5 – Wayne Gretzky 02. # 21 – Gordie Howe 03. # 31 – Bobby Orr 04. # 55 – Mario Lemieux 05. # 82 – Bobby Hull 06. # 85 – Maurice Richard 11 NHL TEAMS REPRESENTED 01. Edmonton Oilers * Los Angeles Kings * St. Louis Blues * New York Rangers 02. Detroit Red Wings * Hartford Whalers 03. Boston Bruins * Chicago Black Hawks 04. Pittsburgh Penguins 05. Chicago Black Hawks * Winnipeg Jets * Hartford Whalers 06. Montreal Canadiens So this was ESPN's 100 Greatest Athletes of the 20th Century list, and since hockey is the number four sport behind Baseball, Football, and Basketball in the U.S., only 6 NHL players made the list. One player from the early 20th century (Maurice Richard), three players from the middle of 20th century (Gordie Howe, Bobby Orr, Bobby Hull), and two players from the late 20th century (Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux) - the best of the best, and no sidekicks or other possibilities. They chose Maurice Richard, but not Patrick Roy as well for Montreal. They chose Gordie Howe, but not Terry Sawchuk, or Steve Yzerman as well for Detroit. They chose Bobby Orr, but not Phil Esposito, or Ray Bourque as well for Boston. They chose Bobby Hull, but not Stan Mikita as well for Chicago. They chose Wayne Gretzky, but not Mark Messier as well for Edmonton. They chose Mario Lemieux, but not Jaromir Jagr as well for for Pittsburgh.
