Matthew’s has always been a piece of work.

Lucky you.  One place I’ve never been to but I know many who love it there.  I have a friend there that is a Philly fan.  All sports.  So the Sabres look to end 9 games over 500 and 41 or 42 wins!  Not bad, and good enough if in the West and should be in, as we beat Islanders and can tie them in points tonight.  It’s crap how they did that.  Head to head should mean more if you’re tied. The Sabres would be a more dreaded foe with a new goalie and the ability to score for even Boston.  I think the Leafs are the only team that can beat them in East.  I’m going Vegas and Eichel to win

Relative to what they've been doing for over a decade previously, yes, the Sabres really DID have a good year!

Being in a division with the Lightning, Leaves®, Bruins, and the up n coming Senators and Red Wings is no easy feat, yet Buffalo, as @Samifan says, came up shy just a bit.
Much has been made by fans, media outlets and bunch of others as to WHY Buffalo came up short, and general consensus seems to be goaltending and/or defense.

I am of the opinion that the Sabres may actually have good enough goalies to make the post season, maybe make a run, un Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Devon Levi.
However, how well the Sabres actually defended left MUCH to be desired, and IMO, is the number one reason they are falling just short as opposed to making the top 8 cut.

Maybe it's a matter of some personnel changes, or maybe it's on-ice philosophy and coaching, whatever the case, decision making, approach to defense, and attention to detail need to improve.
Sabres accomplish that, and all of a sudden those young goalies look even BETTER, and we are talking about a team prepping for Round 1 of the playoffs instead of looking ahead to the draft as usual.

I like to pick on the Sabres here and there, and give one particular Sabres fan a hard time, albeit always in jest, but if the ugly shocking truth be known, I have been a closet Sabres fan for over 20 years now.
Right around the time they lost in the Finals against Dallas, and right at the time when the Minnesota Wild got instated into the NHL, Buffalo was my "outside" team from the Lightning.
    Why?

I had a friend in college who was from West New York, who transplanted to my neck of the woods to attend the University of South Florida. He was a Sabres fan. Big time.
    Brought his fandom with him.
He helped teach me lots about the game of hockey....the nuances, how to watch players, what things to look for, that kind of thing.

Ever wonder how a gal from South Central Florida got so hooked on hockey? Well, he was a big part of that.
So, aside from my burgeoning Lightning fandom, I adopted the Sabres as my "pseudo" team, if for no other reason, my friend Mills LOVED that team.

He and I would have been the same age...sadly, he lost his life to some strange brain ailment at the age of just 32. Just like that.

But anyways, I digressed some here, but, HJ, whenever you feel I am trying to rip holes in your team, just keep in mind that, while yes, I DO that, your Sabres were my late friend's team, he adored them (and yes, he was a huge Ryan Miller fan as well...although, he NEVER hid in the bushes of the Miller household  ), and I not-so-secretly-now, have a soft spot for those cement headed lugs that play in Buffalo, NY!

Season is one Sabres fan can be proud of, despite how it ultimately ended, and hopefully, it serves as a building block moving forward.
Here is to hoping Kevin Adams and his staff are paying close attention to what worked and what didn't....and make adjustments accordingly.

Im sorry about your friend.  We lost a good fan.  The fact that this team is so young, with guys like Tuch and Skinner to help lead them, I do like their chances next year to get in.  Dahlin and Power are two first round picks that are going to be great players.  Dahlin already is. Power is more offensive minded right now. Samuelson is the best true defender they have and they keep showing the Sabres record with him in the lineup as opposed to when he was out injured.  They are far better with him in.  I am not sure if Luukenen is in the plans now that they have Levi?  I would use him as the backup or share duties?  The fact they played Levi in New Jersey after he played the night before tells you they are down on Luukenen.  I think that was a mistake.  But it matters not now.  I say Anderson is gone.  He is old and he knows it. Comrie had best be gone.  So do they go get someone else to replace Luukenen or do they stick with him to back up Levi?  Dahlin, Power and Samuelson are safe of course and are going no where.  I must say that Jokuharju has played much better of late and I am now going to flip and say keep him.  The rest are totally up in the air, and likey some gone.  Bryson is one I would consider keeping. I like the kid.  He is fast. Lyubushkin also I keep.  So Clague not so sure.  Stillman I really am not sure about either.  He came over from Vancouver at the deadline.  If they can get a good defenseman to play with the first ones mentioned I like the team.  Offensively they are pretty solid but you can always use another good forward.  Middlestadt really came on late.  Cozens and Thompson, Skinner and Tuch are obviously going no where.  Olofsson?  I would consider trading him  Seriously.  Greenway I would try and replace.  Not sure about Okposo and how much time he has left. Girgensons has been a solid player here and is the oldest guy.  His penalty killing alone is a plus but he could be gone?  Paterka and Quinn are two very good young players.  They stay if it were up to me and I think they are coming back for sure.  Krebs also.   So what about Granato?  I personally keep him.  I think he did the best he could with what he had especially given the goalie situation.  So Adams should not do anything with Granato. You may want to keep the Sabres as a closet team TFG.  Tampa is not going to get rid of its older players that got them to the Cup. They will do what teams do, honor those that won, but at the same time it kind of hurts things moving forward.  Point is still solid. But Stamkos has seen his better days.  Im not sure how old Hedman is?  The East is tougher than the West now.  It been a long time.

    HJ,

If 2 teams are tied in points......

The first tie-breaker is regulation wins (RW), which are all the wins you've accumulated minus those in overtime or the shootout. If teams have the same number of regulation wins.

The second tie-breaker is regulation and overtime wins (ROW), so only the shootout is excluded.

The 3rd tie-breaker if still tied, is the total number of all wins is used.

The 4th tie-breaker if still tied the edge will go to the team that accumulated more points in the head-to-head matchup against the team they're tied with.

Unlike in the NFL ....if 2 teams are tied the NHL DOES NOT use head to head season match-up as a way to determine tie-breakers/seeding.

Hopefully this helps .... The most points the Sabres can get is 91 (2 games with 2 wins = 4 pts) (87+4 =91)  If the Sabres win both of their games in regulation (RW) then 29+2=31 RW.

The Islanders have 1 game left.  Even if they lose their final record would be:

    W (41) L(32) OT(9) PTS=91 --->RW =35

"IF" the Sabres win their last 2 games in regulation (RW) then:

    W (42) L(33) OT (7) PTS = 91 ---> RW = 29+2 = 31

Sadly even though the Sabres would have 1 more win they would tie in points at 91, HOWEVER, the Islanders have more RW 35 vs 29 or 31 (if the Sabres win their last 2 games.)

It becomes a moot point if either the Islanders or Pens win.

IF the Islanders win and Pens lose then Islanders get last WC spot. (93 PTS)

IF the Pens win and Islanders lose then the Pens get last WC spot (92 PTS)

IF BOTH team win then Islanders get the last WC spot.

Even if BOTH teams lose and Sabres win both games, the Islanders get the last WC based off of the Regulation Win Tie Breaker  (35 vs. 31)

    Definitions:

RW stands for Regulation Wins and was introduced in the 2019-20 NHL standings, next to the ROW column. The NHL now considers regulation wins more valuable than overtime wins. So when two or more teams are equal in points, the team with more regulation wins will rank higher, even with a lower ROW total.

ROW stands for Regulation plus Overtime Wins and was added to the NHL standings table in the 2010-11 season. The ROW stat was created to differentiate between team victories and shootout wins. The league felt that team victories should outweigh the individual nature of shootout wins.

So what happens when teams have the same RW?

When two or more teams have an equal Regulation Wins record (and same point total), the next step is to look at total of regular and overtime wins (ROW stat). This is according to Rule #3 of the Tie-Breaking Procedure.

So yes ...even if the Sabres win their last 2 games and both the Isles and Pens lose, the Sabres will not get in because the NHL use Total Points then RW.  It is what it is ...that was decided by the NHL a couple of years ago.

But I agree with @SaucyJack, time to go back to awarding 3 points for a RW and we would avoid this mess ........

Its just crap that we beat them in the head to head and we are eliminated.  We are a better team than the Islanders if you take away the goalies. Now we finally have a kid that can keep us in.  But its too late. Stupid ass Adams

The Bruins should win the East, Jersey could actually be a dark horse.  I don't like the Leafs chances.  Panthers are fodder over a 7-game series; they just can't bring it every night.   And something is wrong in Tampa.

I'm ashamed as a Flyers' fan to say it, but I'm cheering for the Rangers or the Devils.   I just disllike the Bruins, their players, their fans, and (particularly) their announcers more than the NY Metro teams.

    Out west:

The Jets will win their first round bout with Vegas.  It's possibly the worst first round draw possible for Vegas.

It'll come down to the Avalanche or the Wild.  I just like what the Wild have put together so thats who I'm cheering for.   Dallas could be a dark horse.  I don't like Edmonton for playoff hockey and don't like their goaltending.  And LA isn't quite ready yet.

I think you are dead wrong on Winnipeg beating anyone.  Vegas will roll them.  And Florida has no shot, I agree with you there and totally disagree with the above poster picking them to play Vegas.  What a joke.   The Leafs are better than you think .  I give the Leafs the beset chance of any other team beating Boston.  Rangers and Devils are good but Devils are more dangerous of the two because they have a lock down defense and if they can get the lead they are tough to beat. But they are no offensive monster.  If they do not get the lead they are in trouble.  Its tough to pick against Boston with the season they had.  But Ill take a shot with the Leafs. I am all in on Vegas to win the West.  Colorado has bigger problems than even Tampa does. The Kings are the true sleepers in the West.  So Vegas over either Kings or Dallas or Edmonton in the West and Boston or Toronto in the East.  Toronto has had the Devils number for years. They have to find a way to win a one goal game vs Boston.  Mathhews and Marner and Tavares is a beastly combo.  Better than any 3 Boston can put out there.  Pasternak and Marchand is their answer.

  5. 9 hours ago, SaucyJack said:

One of them is regulation wins, which can’t be seen in normal NHL standings like those shown in the NHL app.  (One more reason to end this 20+ years of bush league points rules and give 3 for the regulation win, thus forcing it be shown in any standings.)

But I digress…and buried The Lead.  (Sabres now toast after losing to Devils.  Even though Chicago beat Pittsburgh.)

P.S.  I read a few days ago that the regulation win tiebreak gave the edge to the Isles over Pens and Sabres.

What I do not understand is how the Sabres are finished when with 2 wins and a Montreal win vs Islanders, Buffalo would have tie with Islanders in points and beat them in the head to head!!!!!  So how the hell do they win the  tie breaker?  And we would have more wins!!!!  Its ********

I guess I agree with your take on the 3 points for a regulation.  When teams are tied with less than 4-5 minutes left, it seems they both go into a shell to preserve the point.   Especially if the game is between teams that are not in same division or conference.  But I am for the old school.  A tie is a tie.  In fact, being here on a Philly forum, the Flyers have a record that will never fall as they had that 35 game unbeaten streak in the 70's or 80s, forget the exact year.  I am pretty sure Parent was still there.  They had a bunch of ties in there but that is the way  the rules were.   I think at least 6-7 ties.  The only game ever played in Rochester that counted in the NHL regular season standings, I was there.  Brodeur vs Hasek.  Sabres and Devils.  They jammed 11,000 inside an AHL arena.  A place where I watched countless concerts, including Allman Bros, Elton John, Aerosmith, and the  list goes on.   So back on topic, I am for the tie, BUT, I REALIZEZ THE SHOOTOUT IS POPULAR WITH THE CASUAL FAN AND WILL NEVER BE TAKEN AWAY.  Of course in playoffs no tie and no shootout.

Did you guys  happen to see the penalty shot the Sabres were awarded the other night?  Tuch took the shot and missed.

I am not sure I agreed with the decision to play the kid, Levi on back to back nights and in N Jersey.  It did not work.  I believe a motivated Luukenen would have given us a better shot than the kid, who I like very much, but he must have been tired after the win vs Rangers in a shootout. Its not really fair the Sabres are eliminated when the stinking Islanders would have same points and we won the head to head!!  How the hell do they say we are eliminated with that crap?  Not to mention we would have one more win.   I understand we must beat Ottawa and Columbus and they must lose to Montreal.  But its possible is it not?  Whey would they get the tie breaker when we won the head to head with more wins?  Mind boggling

  6. I will be hoping that Montreal can pull off a win at the Isles.  But if somehow the Sabres can win out, they would beat out the Islanders regardless of how Pittsburgh and Florida fare.  Florida plays Carolina.  Hoping for a Canes win. I am not sure how the tie breakers work?  If we lose in N Jersey and then win vs Ottawa and Columbus, we would still beat the Islanders out as far as I know?  But winning all 3 with a Carolina win in Florida would put the Sabres in I believe?

Yeah bay beee shootout win at MSG!

And I did not watch but my Crapitals finally did you a favor beating the Islandudes!

Could be worse!  (Feggedaboud the Cats.)

So yes, win your last 3 for 93.  Hope the Pens only get 2 against ChiTown and Columbus (for 92).  And may Les Canadiens waltz into Brooklyn winning to keep the Isles at 91 or 92.  Let’s do this, people.

P.S. Brooklyn, Elmont, whatever place in Longguh Island…

Its possible but the biggest hurdle is tonight.  Beating Lindy's damn Devils with Luukenen.  Take your foot off the gas Lindy, for old times sake.

  8. I realize its likely not going to happen.  But I do like the Leafs to down Florida tonight. The Leafs are starting to play their game.  They are dangerous.  If they win the Sabres must pull the upset at the Garden and then they would be right there with the games in hand.  But those teams they play are tough.  Starting tonight. They probably cant afford a regulation loss.  Must get a point at least if not two.  How motivated the Rangers are is questionable?

  9. 11 hours ago, SaucyJack said:

    Unfortunately you got none.

Apologies from Washington.  Although tied 2-2 until Florida broke the tie with a minute to go, the Caps just aren’t good enough to help.  Yes, without Ovenchicken tonight, but outshot 15-1 in the 3rd with about 4 minutes left, sheesh…

…it will be a miracle if they help out in 45 hours when they host the Isles for the second time in a dozen days.

Washington, like the Sharks, have quit on their coach's.  Infuriating.  Somehow they played two periods yesterday.  The other poster though is right not to make it due to Boston and N Jersey, but the Sabres wont quit. But I do not think they get any help.  Isles finally playing and Florida was hot. Both will be one and done.

Too soft. Sabres are absolutely useless in the hard areas. All you have to do to beat the Sabres is keep the play to the outside, along the wall, and get in front of the net where they are completely incapable. Our garbage team did it twice before this last one where we've packed it in for the year.

It'll be really really sad for the "good young team" when the Jets finally make the playoffs and you just add another year to your total. Sabres just don't get what it takes to win in this league.

If our young team was in the West, we would be in.  As young as they  are it will take more than Owen Powers first year to go anywhere in the playoffs anyway.  Him and Dahlin are two you wish you had on your team.  Id rather be in our shoes than yours.  Oh, and I guess you just let  us have that last game didnt you?  The win in Detroit was earned.  You should get tanking.

great goalie prospect, i believe it is the best thing for him, let him get a little bit of experience at the end of the season so he knows what to work on over the summer. I think he claims the net next year for your boys and will be fine. I have never been a buffalo fan but i believe they absolutely make the playoffs next year. Just too deep, very young and talented team.

They should bounce some teams that are in transition like an old Penguins team.  Make no mistake, Perrault is still the best Sabre of all time.  Id put Robert right there too.   They have Dahlin and Power to build with. Power had 3 assists last night I believe.  Middlestadt has become another good set up guy and Thompson and Skinner can finish.  Thompson has a shot at 50 goals.

  12. Well its too bad we no longer have the contest.  Here are some up to date odds from the oddsmakers in Vegas:

    Boston  +370

    Colorado +700

    Toronto  +900

    Edmonton +1000

    Carolina +1000

    NJ Devils +1100

    NY Rangers +1200

    Las Vegas +1200

    Tampa +1400

    Dallas +1500

I think Boston will have to dispose of either Carolina or the Leafs or Rangers in the East finals.  My West final is Vegas over Dallas.  I think Vegas will get to the finals.  But I am not going to pick them to win it all just yet.  If ever the Leafs had a shot, its now.  But Boston is an obstacle.  Dallas and the Rangers and even the Devils must be considered sleepers.
