Gary Thorne was the name of the guy you were thinking of and he was awesome

Yes.  And he is in California now. He called in during an Orioles game last year as when he left ESPN he did the Orioles games.  Bill Clement, the retired Flyer, was very good.

  2. Gee we won one. With the worst hockey announcers I have ever heard.  I mean, remember when Bill Clement was the analyst and the announcer who used to also be the Orioles announcer was very good?  I just cant remember his name, but they were ten times better than the lame ass crew that called last nights game.  I turned it off with the Sabres up 2-0.  Figured if I kept watching they would lose.

It's good to see that you're taking everything in stride...

It bears saying: if you lose game 1 in a blowout, all is not lost. Likewise, if you win game 1 in a blowout, you shouldn't start planning the parade. There's a reason they make them play all 82 games.

Yes, I get it.  I guess part of my reaction is the fast exit if a very good Orioles team? A team I have cheered for my entire life.

  4. Opening night I did not see.  I saw the score and I won’t be buying FUBOTV so I can get punished watching the Sabres.  They need Quinn in the lineup and the roster isn’t bad but the goaltending sucks.

You can dare...the rest of us got tired of being burnt by the Bills

All kidding aside, a no-brainer to hang onto Dahlin for the long haul.
11M AAV though? Well, I guess...
Not saying he isn't worth it, but will that impede the team's ability to retain enough of a star core down the road to establish a championship team?
    We will see.

I really would like to root for the Sabres to do well, especially since one of my best online friends who passed some years ago, was a Sabre fan, but SOME people round here make that AWFULLY difficult :shifty:

At any rate, kudos to the Sabres for identifying the type of player they will need to be a winner and making sure he goes nowhere else.

I’m debating whether or not to get a stream from FUBO and be able to watch the Sabres as I can’t get them on YOUTUBE TV. I may see if they prove to be competitive?  After Levi was lit up for 7 by Penguins in preseason I’m hesitant.  I no longer believe in this small goalie and you mentioned the Bills.  Absolutely could have been SB winner but now Milano is done!  Knee , out for season it seems. He is a huge loss.  Von Miller better live up to expectations.  They must get a CB off wire also.  As White also finished.

  6. Many in the hockey world, former  Sabres and announcers and others paying tribute to Rick Jeanorette now in Buffalo.  Lindy Ruff, Granato. Rob Ray, Jim Lorentz, Brian Duff, Biron, the Toronto Maple Leafs play by play guy and many many more taking turns at the 🎤 mic.  Former and current Sabres there also.

Sabres definitely need the defense more than the offense from the blue line.
Until your team figures out what, exactly, they have in goal, a solid defense will help insulate whomever it is.

It can turn a mediocre goalie into a decent one, a decent one into a good one, a good one into a great one.

Too often last season, your Sabres lost games, and they were blamed on the goalie, when in fact, it was the defense, more often than not, that left the goalie out to dry...giving him less than ideal chances of making stops.

Goalie still has to do his job of course, which is why your boys will need to figure out who can take control of that net, but having a reliable defense sure would help the goalie nerves!

I read a few places here and there that Buffalo might look into getting Connor Hellebuyck from the Jets.
That would be fantastic for the Sabres if they could get him as he is a top tier goalie playing on what looks to be a rebuild project in WPG right now.

And if he were made available....what would it cost Buffalo to get him?
Surely, getting a goalie of his caliber is worth most any cost, but not AT any cost, as you certainly don't want your team gutted just for one guy. Even one as good as Hell Boy.

There has been much rumor of them going for him but Winnipeg likely wanted too much.?  Levi could play and I want Comrie gone.  Something should happen soon.

Yes. 27 yr old former Bruin...mid sized defenseman (6' 195) who CAN chip in some assists here and there, but his primary powers are that of a shot blocker and a hitter (I.E. more of a defensive defenseman).
Plays a bit bigger than his mid size would suggest in that regard.

Bottom pair guy, but can play the second pair with very good partner...MAYBE play top pair with an elite partner.
Doesn't seem to turn the puck over a ton, BUT, has been known to do so at inopportune times....IMO, kinda middling when it comes to puck possession.

3.3M cap hit...hmmm...maybe about right. If he is sharp, well worth it...if he starts making too many mistakes, will seem like an overpay.
Sabres need more experience on defense, he has it...we will see if he can keep his game together in a positive way for the Sabres and he becomes a part of actually helping the goalies in prevention of prime scoring chances.

We need the defense, we don’t need offensive defensemen because Dahlin and Power have that covered.  I am not sure if free agency is over?  If not then expect stupid Adams to make more moves.  I pray Quinn’s recovery is fast.

  9. This really sucks.  How the hell does this happen?  So they say 4-6 months but reading further into it they believe he could only miss a month but more likely to return in December.  Better than the entire season of course but this is a gaurantee for more ice time for others.  Quinn is one that the organization and myself have high hopes for.  He is 21.  Some of the recently drafted are going to get a shot at making the big club with this.  Sucks

  10. Obviously Danny is popular in both Philly and Buffalo.  He made sure to keep a good reputation in both cities he made big impacts in.  I wish him luck, I must say I’m surprised by this.  I’m sure you know it’s risky.  Great players don’t always translate into great coach’s or GMs.   In any sport .  It’s kind of a bitter pill for Sabres and Flyers to see expansion Vegas hoist the Cup tomorrow night.  Oh, do any of you doubt it’s going to happen?  It will happen.  Accept it.  At least it won’t be Reinhart.  I actually thought he might wind up in Philly.  Again, I hope you all get through todays horrible event on I-95.

I love AHL hockey.  Living only 30 minutes away from Hershey my family tries to make a few games a year.  The atmosphere is great.  You may remember, I have mentioned before I used to be on the ice crew for the Norfolk Admirals (back when they were still in AHL for the Blackhawks).  Some great stories I could tell you.  I met a ton of players who went on to have successful careers in the NHL.

The Bears and Amerks used to have a great rivalry years ago when most of the AHL teams geographically remained in the northeast.  With the AHL expanding nationwide most of the North and Atlantic division teams don't play the Central or Pacific division teams which is a shame.  ( I get the $$$$$ factor).   I also get the factor of moving many AHL teams to the west coast to make travel easier on the players for their respective NHL club.

Do you remember the old IHL (International Hockey League)?  I remember when the IHL was absorbed/merged by the AHL.  That is when the AHL really began to take off.  Hats off to Dave Andrews, former  AHL President and Chief Executive Officer.... he had a vision for the AHL and it has really paid off.  Unlike Bettman who is hated throughout the NHL.

Good luck to your Amerks even though I am partial to Hershey (living close by) and to Lehigh Valley (the area where I grew up and AHL club to the Flyers).

And yes ...of the current active teams in the AHL.... Hershey is the oldest (founded in 1938) and Rochester is 2nd oldest (founded in 1956.)  And yes the Bears have the most Calder Cup wins at 11 with the Amerks in second with 6 Calder Cup wins.

    Great post .......

In the old days when Hershey, Rochester, Springfield, Providence, (exit), almost forgot the Baltimore Clippers, and even the Buffalo Bisons were the main teams, you had to ride a bus.  No more.  So Hershey won and is In finals and if it’s that farm team of the Kracken, who are up 3-2 on Milwaukee, it won’t be a big s ride from PA to California.  The Western team will likely be the favorite due to their outstanding record but Hershey can’t be counted out.  Good run by Amerks.  I’m sure Adams is happy that the Sabres can pluck someone from that lineup maybe?  It’s crazy how many teams, but many will never meet unless it’s the Calder Cup final

  12. The Rochester Americans are still alive!  Down 3 games to 1 they beat Hershey in game 5 to force another game, in Rochester, and it’s now 3-2.  Rochester is the big underdog left in the tournament for sure.  Hershey are a big tough team.  I have seen Hershey more than any other opponent at the  War Memorial over the years but it’s been a long long time since I have attended in Rochester.  I go to Buffalo more often.  Hell, you can buy season tickets to Rochester Amerks for about the same price as one good Sabres ticket.   So this Calder Cup surprise run by the Amerks has to be good for the Sabres as a few of these guys if not 2 or 3 will have a shot at seeing time with the big club next year.  It will be nothing short of a miracle if they manage to beat Hershey the next two and get to the Calder Cup finals and the two western teams left are monsters.  Of course Rochester and Hershey do not see them in the regular season, The AHL is huge now.  And some teams can never play unless it’s the Calder cup final.  Imagine Bakersfield or San Jose playing Rochester in the finals.   No bus rides like the old days.  They would have to get on a plane. The league is not coast to coast and Rochester and Hershey are two of the oldest and most storied franchises in the league.  Both have won multiple Calder Cups.  Its fitting that these two have met once again.  We do not see Hershey as often as we did in the old days.

PS, a couple of Sabres on the team are Lawrence Pilut and Jyost.  I’m sure I spelled his name wrong but he was in Buffalo before.  I thought Pilut could stay up but they had other ideas.  I’d prefer him to Stillman for sure.  I don’t think Lawrence will stick around long because he can play in the NHL and would start on some other teams.

Followed in silliness by this.  Toronto will lose to just about anyone in the playoffs. Their core is flawed.  They'll panic and break it up or simply fade without winning anything.

I'm with you on your bias against the sunbelt teams, but it is what it is.

It's great the Panthers are doing well. I like their team.  But it's not exactly like their 17-person fanbase deserves the success.

    Vegas will win

  14. I’ll tell you what’s wrong.  It doesn’t SNOW in any of those places!  It’s not where hockey is played.  How did this happen?  No Canadian team.  No NE team such as Boston or Buffalo, which by the way is maybe the best hockey town in the USA.  People in Detroit might argue otherwise but only success and being in a big market made them even mentionable.  More of a basketball and baseball town.  Toronto is going to get there one of these years, unless they have the misfortune of running into my young upstart Sabres!  lol 😂.   Playoff bound next year!  But these 3 cities are NOT HOCKEY TOWNS.  Don’t argue with me on this because you know I’m right!
