AJgoal
Until they lose a few contracts off the books, they just don't have enough cap space to add him long term. You can't extend a player until they're in the last year of their current contract. They have plenty of cap space in the years when an extension would be in effect, but since there are two more years on Giroux's contract, they can't sign him. The eariest they could sign him to an extension would be July 1, 2013, pending changes in the CBA.
jammer2
@touche22 Giroux has 2 years left on his deal...this coming year and next, under the current CBA, you can only extend a player if he's in the last year of his current contract. EDIT...AJ beat me to it!
