Sportsnet president Scott Moore said the network and the CHL plan to "revitalize" the tournament's format, which has been in use since 1983. The March Maddness one-and-done, single-elimination format similar to the NCAA tournament is one of the scenarios on the table.

This vision implies to have more than four teams in contention to play more playoff games to generate interest and disseminate more games to attract more viewers.

“Whenever the content increases, it’s great for us. What is good with March Madness in the United States is that it lasts three weeks and several rivalries are born,” says the president of Sportsnet.

What do you all think of a change to a 16 team single elimination tournament?

@hf101   I would welcome the change with open arms. To be honest, the current format has been flat for quite a while. The CHL was having trouble selling out games for the Memorial Cup, so they concocted a scheme where the home team was in the tourney automatically. They really sold out the integrity of the game to assure Memorial Cup sell outs. This proposal, this would right the wrong. This wide open 16 team format would literally sell itself. The first round series would be a tough as nails top 16 team, not an OHL team that barely squeaked into the playoffs. Any hockey nut would kill for a ticket to see this stuff unfold. Teams would be getting upset left and right...

This new format would make the Memorial Cup all that much harder to take home....even under the old rules, winning the Memorial Cup was a LONG drawn out battle of attrition. Making it harder seems so unfair....lol. This would make for some FANTASTIC series. Please, please let this happen........

Pffftt.....just read the article, lol....there is no wrong righted here....they *still* want to give the home team a birth....WOW...if this tourny can't sell out seats on it's own merit, that is pretty sad.

Some big time conspiracy theories will always be at work. The teams that are picked by a "committee"....very interested to see just who is on the committee. If Windsor or Barrie are denied Memorial Cup births when it's obvious we should have got an invite......fc and I will blame Branch...right away. Really, who knows how much influence Branch will have over this new playoff format. This is really leaving the door wide open for an annual spring CHL fan uprising....lol. There will be a LOT of controversy, which in the end is good for the league. Anything that gets you to lead off Sportscenter is good marketing, whether the content is negative or positive, as long as people talk, it will be huge it will pay off LARGE for the CHL.

This really is an ingenious plan....I'm sure it will work, cause more games, more teams means more money.. personally, I'm looking forward to the night where the league announces who the "at large" teams are coming from. Imagine the build up, you could have entire cities wondering if there team is going to get a Memorial Cup birth....how exciting is that?  What a perfect way to introduce yourself to potential fans as well, some might get caught up in the party/excitement involved in the waiting for the announcement. Sounds like unprecedented fun to me.
