Dec. 3: TOR vs VAN

  1. Van Riemsdyk, Marner, Polak
  2. Rielly
  3. (Shootout)

Final score: 3-2 (SO) VAN.

1: Three Leafs caught in no-man's land, far too deep in the zone, covering none of the Canucks three shooters out at the points.

2: Rielly's high risk/high reward play results in a turnover that leads to the second Vancouver goal.

Frustrating loss for Toronto because they outplayed Vancouver for most of this game.

I didn't see it...but sometimes coaches reward guys for a great game.

I've never understood the shootout selections. Most of the time teams do not select their best offensive players. A shootout involving the Leafs should have: Marner, Nylander, Matthews, JVR, and Kadri. It's not just the Leafs either. Whenever I watch a shootout, I notice big name players being omitted or left out until the 5th or 6th shooter... meaning there was a chance they never would have got a shot. Strange.

Dec. 7: TOR vs MIN

  1. C. Carrick, Kadri
  2. C. Carrick, Gardiner
  3. Bozak, Zaitsev

Final score: 3-2 MIN.

1: Miscommunication and giveaway behind the net.

2: Straight through the middle of the Leafs "defence" (and I use that term loosely).

3: Turnover by Bozak to prolong zone time, but Zaitsev's guy is able to make the pass out in front of the net. (Someone needs to help Rielly out on this play.)

Bad first period. Does that sound familiar at all....

We're in a three-way tie for last. I think we should tank again from here on in by trading away anyone and everyone that isn't going to be part of the core of this team going forward. We need more draft picks. Look at what we got with Marner, Matthews, and Nylander. Huge plus. We need the same thing on defence. :)

Yah, it seems there are a few players who don't want to fit in or buy in to the hard work for 60 minutes school of thinking. That simply won't work - we need all the horses pulling at the same time. We are currently in 25th place in the league overall and if we go on a win streak (which is possible) we could put ourselves right into the worst place in the standings - the middle. Where you have no chance of winning a play-off round and also no chance of winning the lottery.....

Maybe we should tank.... :hocky:

It worked last season. We got Matthews. Tanking has rewards.  :ok:

Imagine the roster that the Leafs could assemble with a few strategic moves at the trade deadline. We ship out some combination of Bozak, Komarov, Polak, and JVR, and in exchange we get a solid defenceman that can play right now, and a few draft picks to add to the collection + another lottery pick. The Leafs could really turn things around in a big way.

Dec. 11: TOR vs COL

  1. Bozak
  2. Van Riemsdyk, Brown, Rielly
  3. (Empty net.)

Final score: 3-1 COL.

1: Penalty by Bozak.

2: Penalty by Van Riemsdyk. Horrendous defensive breakdown by Brown and Rielly.

3: No DE is charged on an empty net goal.

I figured this would happen. The Avs get humiliated by Montreal and then use Toronto as their bounce-back game.

The avs actually sucked. Varlamov and Rantanen were the ONLY players for the Avs who showed up. Varlamov was in beastmode.

True. I just meant that they would bounce back with a win somehow against Toronto. On Saturday, their goalies couldn't stop anything. On Sunday, they were unbeatable. Toronto just caught the Avs a day late. :(

Dec. 13: TOR vs SJS

  1. Polak, Hunwick, Hyman
  2. Hunwick
  3. (Shootout.)

Final score: 3-2 (SO) SJS.

1: Tricky play to score here. Basically Polak and Hunwick both over-commit with bad pinches and take themselves out of the play without eliminating anyone. Hyman takes his sweet time coming back and before you know it the Sharks have completely broken down the Leafs defence.

2: Hunwick with the penalty, costs the Leafs almost immediately.

3: No DE on shootout goals.

Another shootout loss by the Leafs and 2 points evaporates again. Please engage tank mode from here on in...

Pretty sure JVR "won' this last year....nice defence of his title.

     Honorable mention to Jake Gardiner.

I know one thing...if I'm the Leafs and I'm up by a goal in the 3rd neither of these guys is getting a sniff of the ice.

This is gettin' pretty old.......

14 years old...

Excluding the fluke playoff appearance in the lockout shortened season of 2012 (before they could collapse down the stretch and give it all away), here's a look at the Leafs roster from the last time they made the playoffs over a full 82 game season:

Look at these names. Are any of these guys still active in the NHL?  :hocky:

Ironically enough, he was one of the better players on the Leafs in 2015-16:

# POS JER NAME   DE   GP ATOI TTOI MPBE   G A Pts TPM   Def%
1 L 18 Milan Michalek 0   13 14 : 25 187   187.4   1 5 6 6   1.000
2 L 25 Rich Clune 1   19 8 : 06 154   153.9   0 4 4 3   .994
3 R 39 William Nylander 3   22 16 : 20 359   119.8   6 7 13 10   .992
4 L 21 James Van Riemsdyk 6   40 17 : 46 711   118.4   14 15 29 23   .992
5 G 45 Jonathan Bernier 19   38 -   - 2147   113.0   - - - -   .991

This season has marked a steep drop off in his defensive play. (Also, I've been watching the forwards more carefully this season as well, so my scoring accuracy is getting better the longer I do this.)

Dec. 15: TOR vs ARI

  1. Rielly, C. Brown, Marner
  2. B. Smith
  3. (Shootout.)

Final score: 3-2 (SO) ARI.

1: A poor line change to be sure, but Rielly, Brown, and Marner manage to circle around off to the right of Andersen and cover nobody.

2: Ben Smith with the penalty. (The first of the two for the 2-man advantage.)

3: No DE on shootout goals.

Another shootout loss. Finding ways to lose games and once again doing it with ex-Leafs players leading the charge. This is just inexcusable at this stage. Perhaps some shootout practice might be in order for the players???
