Mitch Marner: Toronto's Modern Day Doug Gilmour

Its been a long time coming, but Mitch Marner finally has his own thread.  About time too. He's leading the team in points... the best team in hockey.  Matthews and Marner are the most lethal duo in the NHL and wow do they work well together.  Marner's playmaking is prime Gilmour level, and he has the scoring touch to match.  For fans who were too young to see #93 play, #16 is your guy.

Honestly, I've always felt that long term, when all is said n done, Marner > Matthews.... but most people would disagree with that because Matthews is the flashier player, while Marner is more 'basic' for lack of a better term, yet just as important.

In fact, if I were to dare a guess and say who would hurt the team more if they were out long term with injury, I'd say missing Marner for an extended period would be more devastating than Matthews.

Seems Matthews is very much reaping the benefits of having Marner as his regular linemate now, meanwhile, I do believe Mitch would make just about ANY good center great. 

In the past, I've compared Marner more to a Patrice Bergeron type. A guy who does everything, does it low key, and leaves people wondering how the heck he puts up the numbers he does, IN the market he does them in, with relatively lesser fanfare.

I got to see a bit of Gilmour play when I was much younger....I am not sure I would equate Marner with him though.
Then again, I am no Gilmour authority.

But from what remember of Gilmour, he was more of an in-your-face type, both in agitation, hitting, and was a constant bother around the opposing goalie's crease.
Marner doesn't seem to fit that description.

At any rate, I will most definitely concur Toronto has an excellent player in Mitch Marner and, if the day ever comes that the Leafs would NEED to part with either he or Matthews due a cap crunch, Toronto would best be served by getting a nice haul back for Matthews, while making sure Marner remains a Leaf for life.

You might be right, since he gets so many assists. He sets Matthews up for a lot of his goals.

It almost feels like their positions should be reversed. Marner is an ideal center, and Matthews is the ideal goal-scoring winger.  (Just based on their stats of course. Centers usually grab most of the assists.)

True but I'm going by size, skills, and production. The game has changed from the brawling 90's, so Marner will never be asked to play a physical role like that. But he definitely seems to fit the Gilmour model albeit he's playing on the wing instead of at center. At some point, I fully expect him to get moved to center. You always put your best playmaker at center and put the snipers on the wings.  But who knows?  It's working right now. Everything is clicking. In today's NHL, it doesn't seem to matter what position you get assigned because the players are everywhere on the ice anyway.

That was very much Doug Gilmour. He did everything for Toronto back in the early 90's. Other than Mario Lemieux and Steve Yzerman, I think Doug Gilmour was the 3rd best center in the game. Maybe Gretzky was still better at that point.
