Takin' It to the Streets

Human nature seems to dictate that when two cultures try to coexist, there will be clashes. No matter how strong the similarities may be, the differences always seem to rise to the top at some point or another. For instance, despite over a century of being a part of Canada, the primarily French-speaking province of Quebec nearly voted for independence in 1995, and from 1993 through 2008, the separatist Bloc Quebecois won a sizable percentage of the vote and a majotiry

Will Chris Kelly Remain A Bruin?

After the Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup in the summer of 2011 Chris Kelly went out and had himself a follow-up season potting 20 goals and shining as a third line player. It was a perfect scenario for him and the team. A nice versatile depth player that could put the puck in the net as well. His 20-goal season earned him a four-year, $12 million contract from then general manager Peter Chiarelli to remain a Bruin. Fast forward three seasons and 171 regular-season games since signing that big

Public Enemy Number One

Hard feelings from a fan base toward a player that leaves a team on bad terms is not rare in hockey or in sports generally speaking. What is somewhat uncommon is when said player's new team's fan base soon feels animosity toward said player. One such case is that of Alexei Yashin, whose contract holdout poisoned his relationship with the fans of the Ottawa Senators, and whose later lack of production and eventual buyout embittered New York Islanders' fans. Before we ge

Thornton Advises Hayes Avoid The Bar

We all know that professional athletes can have a target on their back. There's heckling from the stands, strangers come up to you in the streets, you're more recognizable. Professional hockey players who handle the spotlight well often keep themselves out of trouble or from looking stupid.   Former Boston Bruin and 2-time Stanley Cup Champion Shawn Thornton recently spoke at his Putts & Punches charity event in Boston and was asked if he had any advice for new Bruin, Jimmy Hayes. He touche

From Russia with Love

The collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s created a seismic shift in international politics. The Cold War ended, and the United States was the world’s only surviving superpower. The post-1991 world was a far different place than the pre-1991 world. The threat of nuclear war subsided, maps looked different, and the world of sports changed as well. Athletes that were previously forced to defect or get permission from communist governments to play in the West we

How Low Can You Go?

The 1974-75 NHL season was the best of times, it was the worst of times. The Philadelphia Flyers, who were the only expansion team to have won the Stanley Cup at the time, hoisted the coveted trophy for the second consecutive season. Their star center, Bobby Clarke, won the second of three Hart Trophies of his career, and their goaltender, Bernie Parent capped off one of the best two-year runs of any goalie in NHL history. Phil Esposito, who was the only player in NHL

Will Krug Be Worth It?

Back in March Bruins defenseman Torey Krug signed a one year deal for $3.4 million. When that contract expires at the end of the upcoming 2015-2016 season he will again be a Restricted Free Agent, so one would think the Bruins have the leverage. But Krug is going to get paid. With the threat of an offer-sheet from another team a possibility, how much he gets paid and by who is the real question. The Bruins really need to think long and hard about paying him.   Torey Krug is a good player and he

Best Place To Play?

SOURCE: http://www.BostonPucks.com The life of an NHL player is something every kid growing up playing hockey dreams about experiencing. Whether it's a just a couple games or a Hall of Fame career the thought of suiting up for an NHL franchise is pretty intoxicating. Which got me thinking, if you could pick one city to have a career in as an NHL player what would be the best and worst city? It's not necessarily your favorite team or least favorite team, it's just the city itself, its culture,

Sen's Hoffman Probably Isn't Psyched

The Ottawa Senators and their leading goal scorer Mike Hoffman received a ruling today in their salary arbitration case. Hoffman was seeking a salary of $3.4 million while Ottawa rejected that idea by submitting an offer of $1.75 million. Ultimately, the arbitrator ruled toward the Senators side of the case and awarded Hoffman a $2 million salary for the upcoming season. Hoffman probably isn't too psyched right now.   Now $2 million isn't something to make light of but Hoffman deserved more. The

Sweeney Patient With Defense

In this instant gratification world we live in today the firing of Peter Chiarelli and the ushering in of Don Sweeney satisfied a lot of Bruins appetites. The old face was quickly gone, the new one was familiar, warm, and easily accepted. Then The Don started going to work and the results were not instantly well received by "shoot the puck!" and "hit him!" screaming barstool GM's throughout New England.   Lucic, Dougie, Reilly and what feels like their bazillion dollars are all gone to other tea

Stepan vs. Voracek: Who your Pick?

Stepan vs. Voracek: Who your Pick?   At first glance, little separates the two 25 year-old emerging superstars Jakub Voracek and Derek Stepan. Both have been at the eye of Stanley Cup Playoff appearances for their respective teams and both have failed to raise the Stanley Cup. Both have also put up impressive numbers during their stints in the NHL, while becoming go to leaders on their respective rosters.   Voracek, a native of the Czech Republic, has become an automatic 20 goal-scorer in every

The Guys that Fans Love to Hate

Top Ten Villains- The guys that fans love to hate.   10) John Scott- The 6 ft. 8, 32-year-old punching bag who has played at both defensemen and left wing for various teams in the NHL, has been the recipient of several suspensions. Scott, who recently signed with the Arizona Coyotes, has had several epic bouts with arch nemesis, Tim Jackman. The first of these earned him a spot in “Goon Hall of Fame” when he came off the bench not during a line change and leveled Jackman which escalated into an

Missed It by THAT Much

Anytime there is a discussion about the greatest players in history, or the greatest player at this or that position, the conversation always starts with and is dominated by the guys with the most awards in their trophy cases. It makes sense. After all, the awards demonstrate the level of excellence that they have managed to attain. Sometimes, though, a guy who has performed well enough to merit recognition is overlooked, simply because someone else played at a level t

Brad Marchand Can Party

There hasn't been much in the way of news in the NHL over the past few days but one thing that did stand out was Brad Marchand strutting his stuff on an outdoor bar in Montreal last week. The moves were caught on camera and as you can see below they were electrifying. Fortunately for Bruins fans when Marchand reaches the end of the bar a bouncer is there to assist him in getting down safely. After studying the film of him on the bar closely it's hard to believe the Montreal Canadiens didn't draf

The Man from H.A.N.N.A.

With a population of less than 3,000, Hanna, Alberta is not a town one would expect to produce a large amount of famous residents. This small town on the Canadian prairies proves just how wrong first impressions can be. Hanna can lay claim to being the birthplace of the multi-platinum recording artists Nickleback. Of greater interest to hockey fans, however, is the fact that hockey hall-of-famer Lanny McDonald is among the town’s natives.

The Holtby Price Tag?   Salary Arbitration meeting for Washington Caps & Braden Holtby   Braden Holtby entered the 2014-’15 season for the first time in his career, as the undisputed starter for the Washington Capitals. Maatta Hits the Reset Button

Olli Maatta: Fresh start comes in the form of a new season.   After his 29 points in 78 games played campaign of 2013-’14 the Finish defenseman was considered to be a big part of a Pittsburgh squad ready to return to playoff success. Unfortunately last season was nothing short of a catastrophic disaster for the 20 year-old. As the season began it was announced Maatta would need surgery to remove a tumor, caused by thyroid cancer, from his neck. His recovery was surprising quick and althou

We're All Human

Today’s edition of Annals of the Ice is different. Everything in hockey history is not positive. I think we do ourselves, the sport, and those who participate in it no favors if we ignore the sadder moments. The events I write about in this post may be the saddest events in the history of the NHL, but I hope it will make us all think about the human side of the game we love so much.   It seemed like a routine play. Bullying Their Way to the Top

The St. Louis Blues made three consecutive trips to the Stanley Cup Finals from 1968-1970, making them the first post-Original Six era expansion team to make it to the Finals. While the feat is impressive, it seems a little less so when considering that the six expansion teams were put into their own division, and one of them had to make the Finals. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Blues’ combined record in those three series was 0-12. Prior to the 1970-71 season, there was

What's Left in the Tank: The St. Louis Dilemma

WHAT’S LEFT IN THE TANK: THE ST. LOUIS DILEMMA   When Martin St. Louis demanded a trade to the New York Rangers something happened that he was not accustomed to. St. Louis was hated. The undersized forward to that point had only been loved by most hockey fans for his tenacity and heart that propelled him to elite status in the NHL ranks. He had appeared a prima donna that no longer wanted to play for Steve Yzerman. This came to be after Yzerman, VP and General Manager for Tampa Bay, left his the

Westward Ho!

From the 1942-43 season through the 1966-67 season, the NHL was an extremely elite club, comprised only of the so-called “Original Six.” While somewhat of a misnomer since only two of the six were founding members of the NHL and the league had previously had as many as ten teams, the name was still appropriate since they were the only surviving franchises from the league’s early years. The league long proved resistant to the idea of change and expansion until a series
