Evaluating the Pens Pending Free Agent Class

After five years of disappointing playoff failures, change has begun to come to the Pittsburgh Penguins, the team has already parted ways with GM Ray Shero, known as much for his spectacular feats of trade as for his complete dismantling of the Penguins ability to build depth through the draft. Head Coach Dan Bylsma remains in limbo with the squad until a new GM is hired, and the GM will have the opportunity to retain or remove Bylsma and his staff. For an epic, and non-sensationalist read on th

Rumors: but could the answer be....

Hearing a million articles and speculations regarding Wilson's conference call and comments. On one hand, he claimed he wants to move towards a younger, faster, more aggressive team and that no option is off the table. Talked about a shift in team culture and that they did not have that many restrictive contracts. On the other hand when asked if he regretted the contracts of Thornton and Marleau, he said "no". Mentioned how Couture, Pavelski, Thornton and Marleau were signed to fair below market

Avalanche will regress next year

2013-14 was a pretty good year for the Colorado Avalanche, all things considered. The team with the “Why not us?” mantra surprised the league by winning the Central Division and posting the third-best record in the entire league. Sure, the playoffs were a disappointment – they were upset in seven games by the Minnesota Wild – but overall, it was quite the accomplishment for a team that finished as the third-worst in the league the year before and new coach Patrick Roy seems to have something spe

Pens don't have depth to truly contend

Another year, another disappointing ending. Such is the life for the Pittsburgh Penguins these days. Every single year, the season begins with promise and Stanley Cup aspirations. And why wouldn’t they? After all, this is the team that houses stars like Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, James Neal and Marc-Andre Fleury. A team built through the draft, the Pens are loaded with star power but every year is the year they’ve found the right complimentary pieces to make another Cup run. So as the Penguin

Panthers Should Take Forward #1 Overall

The Florida Panthers are on the clock. That much we know. Who they’ll take with the first overall selection is still the unknown part, to all of us and probably the Panthers themselves. After all, there are three legitimate contenders for that top overall pick. There’s Sam Reinhart, thought for a time to be the consensus top pick in the draft. The 6’1” playmaker has elite hockey IQ and is already a leader with his CHL team, the Kootenay Ice, and the Canada U18 team. What about Aaron Ekblad, the

Big Moves Coming in Toronto

NHL Trade Talk: May 11, 2014 Does Toronto Management want Phaneuf Gone? - With the hiring of Brendan Shanahan as President in Toronto, many expect changes this summer. It has been widely speculated that center Nazem Kadri , defensemen Carl Gunnarsson, Cody Franson, and Jake Gardiner could be trade bait this summer. Well add captain Dion Phaneuf to the list. Just one year after signing a seven year, $49 million dollar contract. The Leafs are currently shopping him. This report came from Ni

Who are the NHL's franchise players?

There’s a term that gets thrown around in sports these days that has lost a bit of its meaning: franchise player. It’s overused and handed out more than it should be. Just what is a franchise player and who are the proud few in the NHL? What Defines A Franchise Player? Before we can figure out who the NHL’s franchise players are, we need to come to an understanding on just what a “Franchise” player is. To me, a franchise player encompasses the following: • A player a team can build around for at

Your Guide to Getting an NHL Coaching Job

You just got fired from your last NHL coaching job. You weren't a bad coach but let's face it, they fired you. Aside from the great severance package to "walk away", hanging at home with the wife going to IKEA to remodel the sewing room isn't the ideal way to contemplate the next move. Here is a fool proof way to get back in the game and apply for an NHL coaching job. You can thank me later Let's start with your objective; teams want to know what your goal is. Good objective - Create a positive

We Never Got Started: Sabres Post Mortem

Did they Make The Playoffs? – If you do a Google search for “Buffalo Sabres embarrassing”, you’ll get more than a few hits. So that should tell you right there whether or not they made the playoffs. No, they did not make the playoffs and were, simply put, the worst team in the league by a mile and a half: the next closest team in the standings to Buffalo’s 52 points were the Florida Panthers, holders of the #1 overall pick in the 2014 Draft, with 66 points. Their 14 regulation + overtime wins we

It's a Wing thing

Very simple wish list that I would like to see the Wings go out and do this year. First, Jimmy Howard has been less than stellar and frankly has had two average seasons. It is time to make a change in goal. Trade Jimmy Howard and a young forward to the Winnipeg Jets for Evander Kane. Kane is alienated in Winnipeg and he is supposedly being dangled this offseason. The Jets have putrid netminding. With average goaltending this season they would have been in the mix for a playoff spot. Sign local b

In Limbo

Last week the SJ Sharks became the 4th team in NHL history to blow a 3-0 series lead. Right when it looked like the Sharks would drop the playoff choker label, they instead went on to have perhaps their worst playoff choke in history. In 2010 and 11 the Sharks lost in the WCF winning a combined 1 game, 2012 the Sharks lost to the Blues in the WCQF 4-1 as a 7th seed, in 2013 lost to the Kings in 7 games in the WCSF as a 6th seed and now in 2014 were sent packing again by the Kings. Every seaso

A Season to Forget: Canucks Post Mortem

Season Record 36-35-11 Did they Make The Playoffs? No What Went Right? While the Canucks have been the poster team for “how to nose dive into mediocrity” this season, there have been a few glimmers of hope. Firstly, Mike Santorelli and Eddie Lack have arisen as two bright spots in the Canucks future. Santorelli played the “Jack Of All Trades” role before going down with a season ending injury, and Lack stepped into the starting goaltender role (way before it was expected of him) and handled hims

The Downward Spiral: Maple Leafs Post Mortem

Season Record 38-36-8 Did they make the playoffs? What went right? <Drums fingers on desk> Well, OK. I suppose Phil Kessel didn't completely disgrace himself, falling two points shy of his record total for the Leafs. Considering the defensive game was an abject disgrace, Jonathan Bernier's 26-19 record and 2.68 GAA was, let's say, borderline professional. James Van Riemsdyk smashed his points total from last season and for the most part did things on his own with the top line; he and Kes

Playoff Chokers!

Playoff Collapse Cements Sharks Reputation as Chokers The label for playoff choker is thrown around very modestly when it comes to professional sports teams. Coming into the season, the San Jose Sharks were no different, having earned the label at times and being unfairly given it at others. After blowing a 3-0 series leading in their first round matchup with the rival Los Angeles Kings, the Sharks became the definition of playoff failure. The Sharks became just the fourth team in NHL history to

Calgary Flames Post-Mortem

So said one of the most prominent philosophical thinkers of history. It’s a simple statement, the wisdom of which has resonated throughout the ages. With the focused reason of Confucius, let’s study the recent past of the Calgary Flames, in the hopes that we might divine theforeseeable future. Season Record: 35-40-7 – 77 points Division: 6th (of 7) Conference: 13th (of 14) League: 26th (of 30) Wild Card: 14 points back Setting the Stage The 2013 NHL Entry Draft took place on June 30, 2013

Game 6: Will Stalock start? Will Vlasic play?

Quite a listless game 5 from the Sharks as the kings came out and dominated, and Quick regained his form. Niemi was pulled for the second straight game, bringing the question, will Stalock start game 6? Stalock looked solid on several kings opportunities, and plays a much more aggresive game than Niemi. Ill be honest, I was not particularly high on Stalock. While not pleased at Niemi's regression this season, I had only seen 3 games with Stalock playing this season. One was a win against Calgary

Playoff Netminders: The Good, Average, and Ugly

The first round of the playoffs has had it all, overtime, big hits, great goals, and tons of excitement. One thing that seems to be missing, is a goalie that steps up to steal a series or even a game for that matter. Now I am not saying that there has not been good goaltending. I just feet that there has not been that one or two prime time goalie performances that we are used to in the playoffs. The goaltending of Tuukka Rask has probably been the most consistent, and best performance thus far

Canadiens Sweep Ends Lightning Season

The final period of game four pretty much summed up the Lightning’s entire season. Great work ethic, disappointment, hard pressure, success, only to have bad luck strike them down and end their season. The Lightning season was filled with hard luck. First a broken leg to team leader Steven Stamkos put the season in question. The Lightning fought through this, and posted a 100 plus point season. Then star goalie Ben Bishop goes down with an injury, but the Lighting still managed to win home ice

Welcome to Chompboard: Sharks vs Kings game 3

Welcome to Chompboard blog! For those who do not know, Chompboard was once the biggest Sharks forum on the internet. Sadly, for reasons unknown, it shut down a few years back. It was a forum I frequented quite a bit. I named this blog in it's memory, and as an invite to former Chompboard members to join us on this great forum Yes, that is an old picture of Nabokov, but it remains my favorite Picture with the Shark jaws of all time. Seems appropriate. Game 3 is upon us tonight, and the Sharks th

NHL Trade Talk: Bryzgalov Talks Retirement

Bryzgalov Talks Retirement One of the biggest surprises of the season was the signing of Ilya Bryzgalov in Edmonton, and the subsequent trade of him to the Minnesota Wild. Many people shook their heads in amazement, but Ilya has proven all his critics wrong. He is 7-0-3 since coming to Minnesota, and has been the key to the Wild solidifying a wild card spot. Bryzgalov will become a UFA this summer, but he is uncertain of what the future brings him. According to TwinCities.com Bryzgalov is up

Bad Time for Injuries

The end of the regular season is just a week away for NHL teams, and many of the key playoff teams are battling the injury bug. Injuries are always a part of the game, but there is nothing worse than having late season injuries. It is much easier to go into the difficult, and grueling playoffs when your team is healthy. The Detroit Red Wings have been devastated with injuries all year. The Red Wings have actually looked more like their American Hockey League affiliate the Grand Rapids Griffi

Not So Great 8

There have been numerous instances this year where Alexander Ovechkin’s defensive play has been called into question. Last weeks situation may have been the most glaring situation of lack of effort yet. Last Tuesday night the Washington Capitals played host to the Dallas Stars. Both teams are fighting for the final wildcard spot in their conference, so you would think it would be a highly contested game. Well not so much, at least from the Washington Capitals intensity level. The game ended

Top 10 NHL rivalries in the past 20 years.

Before I get into the rankings, I just want to make clear that some of the listings of the rivalries don’t have as much heat as they used to but some are at the height of the peak and still ongoing. What some of the rivalries in the list do have though is a climax and why they have a climax is because of some game changing event that built animosity between the two teams. Some of the teams are rivals because there was much hype built by the imagination of media, hockey fans and analysts alike th
