Battle for back up in Colorado?

As if the season did not start out poorly enough for the Colorado Avalanche there is yet another issue in Colorado. Despite have 9 starters out of the lineup, 3 rookies on one line and no number one goalie on the bench or ice, the Avs still managed a 4-3 win in regulation over the Carolina Hurricanes. The issue in that game was that the Avs were down 3-1 on 10 shots from the Canes. Reto Berra, Colorado’s backup goaltender, got the nod for that game as the Avalanche and coach Roy seem to have hig

Oilers Booed Off the Ice

When Edmonton Oilers fans watched their beloved Oilers draft Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Nail Yakupov they dreamed of bringing the Stanley Cup back to Edmonton. With Saturday nights embarrassing loss to the Chicago Blackhawks it has come to realization that the Oilers will never win with the current roster. The rebuilding Oilers were supposed to be turning the corner this and pushing for a playoff spot. Instead they are all but guaranteed their eighth straight season miss

Oilers, run down.

The Edmonton Oilers, once the home of the NHL’s greatest player, now a place NHL player’s fear going to. A dynasty of hockey in the 1980’s, Edmonton brought home five Stanley cup Championships. Now, Edmonton is a place to be when it comes to hockey, they have dedicated fans that want their team to do well, but they will sure let you know about when they are not. Just this season, a fan proceeded to throw their Oiler jersey onto the ice, to ensure he let them know he was not too happy with them.

The NHL is season is just under a quarter of the way through and already many first year players have taken on important roles with their respected NHL clubs. With that being said let’s take a look at some players who could be Calder Trophy Nominees come season’s end. Filip Forsberg, C - Nashville Predators- Drafted 11th overall in 2012 by Washington The 20 year-old Forsberg is off to a scorching start and if he keeps the pace he is on, he will without question, walk away with the Calder Trophy.

Tampa and Colorado, what went bad for the Avs?

Last season, the Tampa Bay Lightning and Colorado Avalanche were near identical in almost every aspect. They both had a top three pick at the 2013 NHL draft, Colorado selecting Nathan MacKinnon from the Halifax Mooseheads number one overall and Tampa Bay taking Jonathan Droiun (MacKinnon’s line mate) also from the Halifax Mooseheads. Both teams went out and made a trade to obtain their current starting goaltenders, Colorado traded for Semyon Varlamov from the Washington Capitals. Tampa Bay at th

Avs after 19

I wanted to break down what the Colorado Avalanche so far this season. The Avalanche have had a rough start that many people did not expect, although some expected a slower start, not many expected this slow of a start. Breaking down the subtractions and additions to the roster as of 11/16/2014: Paul Stastny; signed a 4 year deal with the St. Louis Blues. Stastny started the season with a boom scoring 1 goal and 3 assists in his first two career games in St. Louis. In his fourth game of the seas

Superstar Surprise Team

The fantasy hockey season is now in its sixth week, and there have definitely been some players on the rise, and some surprise failures. Drafting good at the beginning is always critical, and it is always nice when your fourth or fifth round pick explodes off the start. Here is a list of the top surprise player per position. GOALIE – Ondrej Pavelec – Winnipeg Jets He was pegged as an underachiever last year. Many of the problems in Winnipeg were blamed on him, and trade rumors floated around

NHL’s Top 5 Highlight Generating Players

Once again, I’m doing an NHL’s Top 5 compilation, but this time, it’s about players who can generate goals, hits and/or saves look sensational plus compelling to watch to make lasting memories to viewers. Some of us may know already that the best players don’t do anything to ‘wow’ you, they are just so effective at they do and achieve success by doing so. Every hockey fan knows who Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are. They are 2 of the best players in the NHL. They have each scored over 100 goal

Surprises: The Good! - The Bad!

The NHL season is now a month old, and most teams have played a total of 10 to 13 games. The season has been fast paced, and very exciting thus far. Games have been filled with big time highlight goals, huge hits, and most of all some surprises. THE GOOD SURPRISES! 1- Nashville Predators The Predators have Pekka Rinne back and under new coach Peter Laviolette they have been on fire. Nashville is 6-2-2 (14 points) in ten games. That is a pretty good winning percentage for a team that was predicte

Dripping Oilers Talk Eberle?

The Edmonton Oilers have started yet another season with struggles. A 2-4-1 start in the first seven games has the Edmonton faithful up arms again this season. The Oilers seven game home stand will provide the teams destiny again this season. A terrible home stand will more than likely result in Leon Draisaitl being sent back to juniors, and wholesale changes. The fans have been screaming to shake things up, and Craig MacTavish looks to be at that point. The Oilers plan to draft all these ultra

Waiver Wire Breakouts!

The fantasy hockey season is up and running, and there are definitely some surprise players this year. That is great news for fantasy owners that had a rough time with the draft this season. Help is on the way with these great waiver wire pick-ups. Radim Vrbata – Right Wing – Vancouver Canucks When Vancouver signed him in the offseason everyone looked at the Canucks plan to put him with the Sedin twins, and said wow. It looked like a great fit, and by the way, it has been a great fit in the firs

The Goalie Unemployment Line

Because of the salary cap hockey world, and the abundance of quality goalies, a few quality veteran goalies have been left unemployed. Martin Bordeur, Tomas Vokoun, and Ilya Bryzgalov are all at home watching hockey and waiting for a team to call them. Martin Brodeur The Hall of Fame is waiting for him to retire, but when will it happen. He is by far the biggest name goalie that is a free agent, but I believe he is probably the least likely to find a team to finish the year with. The options are

Flyers Top Line LW Carousel: Michael Raffl

Claude Giroux is one of the best players in the game today, there is no doubt about that. On the other hand, Jakub Voracek is still an under-the-radar type of guy to most teams and fans in the league. Together they have formed one of the leagues best duos. However, it has been a struggle to find a good winger that fit on the Philadelphia Flyers top line with them. Scott Hartnell got most of those minutes last season, but even he was juggled around a bit. After trading Hartnell the identity of

Tomas Plekanec scored his second goal of the game with just 40 seconds left in regulation to lift the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 over the Toronto Maple Leafs in the season opener Wednesday. The goal was a heartbreaker to Leafs fans affter Morgan Reilly tied the game with 2:19 left in the third on a fluky goal that got through Carey Price. Ple

Who's Your Fantasy Netminder Pick?

Picking a goaltender in fantasy hockey can be a tricky task. A great deal of how a goalie produces is based on the team in front of him, and of course his abilities. It seems that every year another goalie slips into the Tier 1 level of goalies. It is just hard to determine what goaltender will perform on a consistent basis. Another question that is very important is, when should a person select their first goalie? Some guys start as early as the second round, but I believe the third round is us

$$$ Deadlock -Columbus vs. Johansen

Every top notch NHL team has a solid first line center. They are very, very hard to come by. So what is one worth? That is the question that Columbus must figure out. Restricted free agent Ryan Johansen and the Columbus Blue Jackets are at a stalemate that might not get solved before the puck drops on a new season. Johansen has completed three NHL seasons of play. The strong, young NHL forward has posted 96 points in 189 games played over three seasons. Last year was his breakout year where he p

2014 Habs Offseason Recap

Hi there folks. The dog days of summer are finally winding down, and I hope you all enjoyed your summer as much as I did. But, with the NHL season looming, the leaves on the trees will soon fade to brown and the lights in the arenas will turn on and our favourite superstars will hit the ice once again. The Montreal Canadiens enjoyed an offseason that could be be described as "transitional". We all knew Brian Gionta likely wouldn't be brought back and we'd have a new captain for this season, but

My World as a "Real" NHL General Manager

This is a precursor blog and will include my team I have assembled in the last 4 years. I will break down some of the rules each roster allows and will give you a deeper look into how in depth these leagues can get at a certain level. First off, I will start at the roster and cap management. On the Major roster you are allowed 25 players that can accumulate points (head to head for the week). We follow the same Salary Cap as the NHL on a year to year basis, this allows for great roster turnover
