Western Conference Hot or Not

Western Conference Hot or Cold I have decided to do a weekly hot and cold for clubs and players. WEEK 1   The Western Conference is shaking up a little less than expected and here is why, who’s hot:   We have to start with the Dallas Stars who have been great since they were blown out 6-3 vs the Colorado Avalanche. Since then, Dallas is 5-0-0 and has allowed 3 goals once, 2 goals twice and 1 goal twice in those five games. Antti Niemi and Kari Lehtonen has split the duties and have gon

Moneypuck

Of all the cities that are called home by an NHL franchise, Winnipeg, Manitoba, with its metro population of about 730,000 people is the smallest. If it were not for the fact that the city is so hockey-crazed, it seems highly unlikely that a team could survive there. While it is true that the much smaller Green Bay is able to support the Packers, Green Bay has a luxury that Winnipeg does not have: a nearby city the size of Milwaukee.   &#

Eastern Conference Hot and Cold

This Weeks Hot and Cold in the Eastern Conference I have decided to do a weekly hot and cold for clubs and players. WEEK 1 Who’s Hot in the Eastern Conference:   Of course this will be highlighted by none other than the Montreal Canadians who are on a relentless terror right now. 8-0-0 to begin the second, Montreal is flying high with goaltender Carey Price. While Price has been stellar at 6-0-0, sitting behind him, 25-year-old Mike Condon is playing top notch as well. Condon is 2-0-0

As you might expect, going from week one to week two, there are a lot of big changes in this week's power rankings. Some of the surprises from last Thursday are gone or at least heading in the direction you would expect, yet others remain.   We have a new #1 this week. Who will it be? Who are the big movers? What are this week's surprises? Read on to find out!   #30 Columbus Blue Jackets (Last Week: 29; -1) The coaching carousel has made its first stop. Todd Richards, this is your stop. John Tor

Rookies to Watch

Rookies to Watch   Having your fantasy hockey team with rookies on it is always a huge risk. This season may be a season in which not just one or two rookies excel, but four or five just might find themselves as regular fantasy league producers. Just two weeks into the season here is the top rookies thus far.   Anthony Duclair – Left Wing – Arizona Coyotes The 20-year-old winger has surprised many by his early season scoring. Duclair has points in five of the six games he has played in this s

Canadians Cup Contenders?

How Bad Do They Want It???   It could very much so be too early in the season, but I do have to ask… Could the Stanley Cup finally be returning to Canada?   Ironically the last team that won Lord Stanley’s Cup was none other than the Montreal Canadians, who look to be an early contender to start the 2015-16 season. Last season. Montreal clinched all but the Presidents trophy with a 50-22-10 record and 110 points. Carey Price dominated the NHL and took home the Hart, Vezina, Ted Lindsey and als

Off to a 2-2-0 Start

Semyon Varla-Who? Last season the Colorado Avalanche saw nothing go right for them and that included the luck of their goaltender Semyon Varlamov. The then 26-year-old, Russian, goalie found himself of the ice and away from his team three different times last season due to injury. He also showed sub-par numbers when he was in net, now some of that could be linked to the entire team’s average of six roster players hurt per game, but you cannot blame just that.   Varlmov earned a 28-20-8

Pucks and Politics

On Monday, Canadians will go to the polls to elect the nation's 42nd Parliament. As a result, it is impossible to watch a Canadian broadcast of an NHL game without being exposed to a barrage of related ads. In honor of the upcoming election, I thought it might be appropriate to take a look at five former NHL stars who ended up (nearly) entering politics in the Great White North.   The most recent member of this club is

Sutter's LA Hot Seat!

Sutter’s LA Hot Seat!   After winning the Stanley Cup in June of 2014 the Los Angeles Kings were poised to repeat last season. Well things did not go as planned. Too many peoples surprise the Kings managed 95 points, and fell short of making the playoffs. There were many excuses that were talked about. The players were worn out from the grueling playoff runs of years past. The off-ice problems with Slava Voynov took their focus off winning. The excuses were endless.   Well the 2015-2016 s

10 Bold Predictions for the 2015-2016 NHL Season

10 Bold Predictions for the 2015-2016 NHL Season   - Eric Staal will remain in Carolina at season end. The Hurricanes will resign the power forward to a contract extension. Many people think that he will be the big fish at Trade Deadline, but I think he stays put. - Neither Connor McDavid nor Jack Eichel will win the Calder Trophy for the top NHL rookie. There are many dark horses such as Sam Bennett in Calgary, Noah Hanifin in Carolina, and Dylan Larkin in Detroit. The pressure is on

2015-2016 NHL Award Predictions

Predicting how players will do each year is almost as fun as predicting how teams will do. Here is a quick rundown of who I got winning the big awards this season. Presidents Trophy – Anaheim Ducks The Ducks will take charge and dominate this season. The big, strong Ducks have been building this for years, and this team is poised to capitalize this season. Hart Trophy (League MVP) – John Tavares, New York Islanders Tavares has been one of the strongest players over the past five years. He i

The Story Continues in Denver

The Colorado Avalanche will enter the 2015-16 season with many question marks. In the 2013-14 season there was doubt among the hockey world that Colorado would contend for anything more than last place. They had just selected Halifax Moose heads forwards Nathan MacKinnon number one overall (after winning the NHL draft lotto) and finished as the second worst team in the National Hockey League. Many had speculated that Colorado would take young defensemen Seth Jones number one as he had ties to th

Singing the Blues in Saskatoon

No place in the world exports more potash and uranium as the Canadian province Saskatchewan. Minerals, however, are not the only product that comes from the land of “Easy to Draw, Hard to Spell,” as the center Prairie province also leads the world in the production of NHL players per capita.   Despite the number of players that come from Saskatchewan, the province has never been home to an NHL team. While its population

Who is the #1 Pick?

Who is the #1 Pick?   It is fantasy hockey draft time, and each and every year fantasy hockey fans cannot wait to see who are the top five picks. In years past it was an argument if Alexander Ovechkin would go ahead of Sidney Crosby or vice versa. Well to no surprise this season is much of the same, with a few top 5 twists.   Many fantasy hockey leagues have drafted, or will be this weekend. Every owner has his or her own ideas and thoughts, but I don’t care how great you think you are. It i

Crowded Crease in Calgary

Crowded Crease in Calgary   The Calgary Flames entered the preseason in very odd circumstances as far as goalies go. They currently have three goalies signed to one-way contracts. What looks to be a problem is truly what teams dream of. Quality goalies pushing each other every step of the way.   Veteran goalie Jonas Hiller is currently entering the final year of his contract. The $4.5 million dollar per year, two year contract was a steal for the Flames, but many complained of inconsistency

Back from the Brink

Some drafts have one player that stands out above all others. In those years, the advantage of a poor season is obvious, and teams that have bad records down the stretch are often criticized for tanking. Regardless of how one feels about the subject, it is impossible not to recognize that the "strategy" sometimes has its advantages. In the 1983-84 season, the Pittsburgh Penguins lost 12 of their last 14 games -- including their last six -- just bad enough to finish thr

Western Conf

So last season I waited until later in the season to make my predictions. This season though, I will be making one now, and one on December 31st. Now I was full of hope last season that my team would actually show up...Though they tried, injuries would continue and their 2014-15 season would go no where. Regardless, here we are getting ready for the 2015-16 season opener and there are a lot of new faces in a lot of places, so lets talk about the west.   Pacific Division:   7. Arizona Coyotes - T

The Darkest of Days

None of us will ever forget where we were on this date 14 years ago. Nearly 3,000 people dies in the largest act of terrorism in United States history. Despite being the direct victim of the attacks, the United States was not the only nation affected, as the dead came from 61 distinct nationalities. Though the targets of the attack were financial, military, and political (assuming Flight 93 was intended to strike the White House or Capital as many believe), no segment

Blackhawks May Trade Patrick Kane

By now anyone who follows the NHL knows Chicago Blackhawk star forward Patrick Kane has been the focus of a rape investigation this summer. It's not something we've written about here at Boston Pucks, nor do I plan on having anything to say about the very serious nature of the allegations he's facing. But it's something that certainly most hockey die-hards have been keeping an eye on leading up to the start of the 2015-2016 season. Until recently nothing on-ice related to his situation had devel

Farewell, Coach Arbour

Some players and coaches become fan favorites despite not being the most successful or skilled. Others do have the success and skills, but a poor attitude or a dirty streak prevent them from becoming as beloved as their talent might otherwise dictate. When you find someone that faultlessly bridges the gap between a fan favorite and a high level of success, you know you have found someone special. The hockey world lost such a person last week with the passing of long-ti

Goaltending Security

Drafting a solid, consistent and most importantly a clear number one goaltender can mean success for your fantasy team. Failing to lock down that star goaltender can lead to doom and gloom for your team. In a world where coaches are becoming more and more willing to run with a two-man system, it makes it even more difficult for fantasy owners. It is very important to draft a goaltender that will get you starts. When points are gained by saves, and wins, your goalie must be in the net to cash in.

Byfuglien Odd-man Out in Winnipeg?

The big man in Winnipeg, Dustin Byfuglien will become an unrestricted free-agent next season. Will the Jets trade him or resign him this season? There is a tremendous amount of speculation surrounding the fact that Winnipeg just might trade him.   It looks as though the asking price for Byfuglien may be too high for the Jets. The Winnipeg Jets have a master plan, and at the head of it will be signing center Mark Scheifele and defenseman Jacob Trouba at the end of the season. These two criti
