Coyotes, Trade Bait

The Arizona Coyotes have had a year to forget, but brighter days may be on the horizon. It is never fun when teams have to dump players to improve, but it is a little better when you have assets to dump that will bring a return. Teams like New Jersey have aging players to dump, that will bring less of a return than what the Coyotes have. The Coyotes are at a point where they may have to give to get. They are in need of young offensive prospects, and the time to retool is now. The Coyotes have w

Flames Backlund Back With a Bang The Calgary Flames are happy to have Mikael Backlund back from abdominal surgery. He returned Wednesday versus the Red Wings and bolted back onto the score sheet with a shorthanded goal, and assist. The 25-year-old Swede has been a perennial underachiever, but has shown strong promise late in the year last year, and in the few games he has played this season. If your looking for a long shot with high potential consider picking up Backlund. He is owned by just by

.500 officially impossible for Colorado

At the start of the season, no one, including the Colorado Avalanche expected them to play so terrible. Many expected regression, and the loss of Paul Stastny was not suppose to be such a big deal. Yet the Avalanche find themselves fighting to stay out of the bottom five spots of the NHL in a year that they should just stop fighting and let #30 sink in. The troubles first began when injuries were over and over an issue. At one point the Avalanche had ten players injured including their number o

Hutchinson Emerges in Winnipeg

It looks as though it may have finally happened. Winnipeg Jets goalie Michael Hutchinson may just now be the main man in Winnipeg. After years of up and down struggles with goalie Ondrej Pavelec the Jets may have found his replacement. Pavelec and Hutchinson have been splitting starts thus far, but based on recent numbers, and Hutchinson’s recent 38 save 5-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks, the trend may change. Michael Hutchinson is 8-2-2 on the year with a 1.67 goals against, and a very impres

Zz's end of season projections

Not exactly half way through the season we look at teams on the rise and fall for the remaining of the 2014-15 season. We will break down entire league so far this season and where I think they will land when game 82 is complete for every team: 1. Anaheim Ducks (28-8-5 51 points) Anaheim made their off-season splash to obtain forward Ryan Kesler (and a 3rd round 2015 pick) from Vancouver in exchange for centre Nick Bonino, Defenseman Luca Sbisa and Anaheim’s 1st and 3rd round picks in 2014.

Salary Cap Trouble in St. Louis may Force Trades?

Winds of change may be blowing in St. Louis, and the culprit is not poor play. It is the salary cap. Things are about to change for the Blues. Sudden superstar Vladimir Tarasenko is currently making $900,000 this year, and will be a free agent at the end of this season. Based on his play this year he will probably be seeking a huge pay raise next season. According to Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Tarasenko will be seeking a deal worth $5 to $6 million dollars a year. To make things

Avs backup job/Nxt gm vs Blues

The duel for back-up in Denver seems to be over, though it is not 100% sure what Colorado will do. Just a few weeks ago, Calvin Pickard was re-assigned to Lake Erie even though he had played out of him mind for the Colorado Avalanche. The young goaltender was sent back due to the fact that Semyon Varlamov was healthy and Reto Berra was their number two. Their other reason was for developmental reasons, where Calvin would get to play more in Lake Erie where in Colorado Varlamov was expect to get

Avoiding the Sophomore Slump

The NHL has been notorious for what has been dooped as the “sophomore slump.” Players who light up the league in their first season in the most skilled league in the World, only to fail to live up to the same levels of success they had during their first year. The latest example of this phenomenon is Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche. The 19-year-old took home the Calder Trophy last season after leading all rookies with 63 points. However, this season, like the rest of his Avs teammates

Where to go from here - Avs

The first 31 games of the season have been all but spectacular for the Colorado Avalanche. The young club stomped the NHL with their franchise best record since 2000-2001 when they won their 2nd Stanley Cup. A roster that spewed out; Patrick Roy, Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, Ray Bourque, Adam Foote, Alex Tanguay and many more stellar Hall of Fame players, and those that will never be in the Hall certainly helped. A shocking loss in game 7 of the post-season seems to have the young Avalanche club f

Las Vegas Testing the Market

The potential ownership group for a NHL expansion team in Las Vegas is making steps to prove a team belongs in sin city. Hockey Vision LLC is a group led by William Foley that is looking to bring a new NHL franchise to Las Vegas. The NHL has approved a plan to explore a season ticket drive, and has given Hockey Vision LLC. the permission to explore interest. The group is planning to start a season ticket drive in February of 2015. The group has now launched a website to help spark interest, and

Mumps Outbreak getting Serious!

The National Hockey League anticipates problems that they will have to deal with each, and every season. The thought that a mumps outbreak would be one of them was not even on the radar. Mumps is a viral infection that is very, very uncommon. The United States and Canada usually have under 2000 cases a year. Often times considerably less. If it is so uncommon, than how has 15 NHL players been diagnosed with the rare virus? It is a mystery. No other professional sport has experienced an out

Be aware of how the Canucks reached the top

The Vancouver Canucks will be relieved to return to Rogers Arena on Saturday when they take on the New York Rangers. This comes after dropping their last three contests against three of their Canadian counterparts. The Canucks will be returning from a seven-game road trip where after winning three of the first four games, the team dropped the latter three to Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal. The Nucks were sitting very comfortable towards the top of the Western Conference just over a week ago and s

San Jose Sharks not what they once were

The San Jose Sharks defeated the Edmonton Oilers in demanding fashion 5-2 Tuesday and the team currently is sitting in a playoff spot, so everything is going swimmingly for the team right? Not exactly. Despite earning a spot in the post-season dance so far, the Sharks find themselves in eighth place in the Western Conference, a far cry from their fourth place finish last season, all this having played more games than any other team in the conference. So despite holding a spot with 33 points and

Klingberg and Hemsky recall World Juniors

The Dallas Stars have lost five of their last seven games and understandably there hasn’t been much for the under-achieving team to be happy about this season. However, reminiscing about their days in junior and having the opportunity to represent their country at the IIHF World Junior Championship as teenagers does give players John Klingberg and Ales Hemsky something to smile about. “I got the opportunity to play in Buffalo and Calgary,” says Klingberg, referring to his time wearing the Sweden

Avs in free fall - where are their leaders?

What has happened to the Colorado Avalanche in this 2014-15 season? You cannot say that the Avalanche have had it easy by any means, considering both the NHL has studied up on the team since their explosion last season that saw them #1 in the Central, #2 in the West and #3 in the entire NHL. A gutsy rookie that came into the league like he had something to prove, after all, he was taken first in the 2013 entry draft. Is Martin Jones the best goalie in the NHL?

If you search the league leaders on NHL.com among goaltending stats, his name might not even come up, but the best goalie in the NHL this season may very well be Martin Jones. The Los Angeles Kings back-up has only found the net seven times this season, but best believe he could very well get more starts the way his season is going. Jones might not appear among some of the league leaders in stats simply for the fact he doesn’t have many starts, but when he has had the chance to suit up, he has b

Devils struggle without Parise

The New Jersey Devils haven’t made the playoffs since the 2011-12 when they fell to the Los Angeles King in six games and there seems to be a simple reason for that. The Devils have been absent from the post-season the last two seasons and why is that, it could simply be because they no longer have star left winger Zach Parise. It’s hard to put so much on one player and of course one player doesn’t make a team, but you have to at least consider the numbers. Here is a list of the years when Paris

The Hotseat is Getting Hotter for some NHL Coaches

All thirty NHL coaches have kept their job this year so far. How long will it be before one will be fired? It may be days or weeks, but I do know that some are definitely on the hot seat. Last season, the Buffalo Sabers relieved long–time bench boss, Lindy Ruff a month into the season. The Philadelphia Flyers did not even wait that long when they ousted coach Peter Laviolette just three games into the season. We are now midway through the first week of December, and all coaches are still in plac

Dallas lacking scoring outside Benn and Seguin

The Dallas Stars made it into the playoffs last season by the skin of their teeth, edging out the Phoenix Coyotes by a single ‘w’. Being the eight seed in the West the Stars were paired up against the number-one seed Anaheim Ducks and though they made the series interesting, they ultimately fell to the Ducks in six games. So heading into the 2014-15 season, Dallas looked to improve on last season by bolstering their secondary scoring by being one of the most active teams during the summer’s free

Jiri Hudler big reason for Flames' Success

It seems only TSN hockey analyst Aaron Ward expected the kind of start the Calgary Flames seem to be on this season. With 33 points through their first 23 games, the Flames are just one point behind for first in the West. Their red-hot start is a far cry from last season when the Flames finished 13th in the West in front of only their Alberta counterparts, the Edmonton Oilers. Though much of this season’s success can be attributed to the career year of captain Marc Giordano (who was just named N

Feast of Trade Talk

– The Los Angeles Kings and Buffalo Sabers are reportedly working on a deal that would send Jordan Nolan, Nick Shore and a 2015 first round pick to Buffalo for Tyler Myers. This sounds all well and good, but I just don’t see Nolan going to play for his father in Buffalo. Just seems a little made up, and fairy tale. Buffalo needs improvement, and must get full worth for Myers. – There seems to be panic in San Jose. After a disappointing playoff collapse last season, they are off to a disappointin

Edmonton in Panic Mode

After another week of loses in Edmonton, which featured a 7-1 drubbing at home at the hands of the Chicago Blackhawks, the Oilers are in full panic mode. The fans are irate, management is quiet, and trade winds are blowing. Here is a couple of trade scenario’s that have surfaced over the past few days. The Edmonton Oilers are in trouble, big time trouble. It seems as though the Oilers are bound and determined to make a move in the next few days. Times in Edmonton are at an all time low. Amongs
