Avs Draft/Trades - UFA break down

Every one had a feeling it was coming. In 2013 the NHL went into Lock out - which somehow they managed to gain back half the season. Regardless, Colorado had their hand forced in contract negotiations with Ryan O'Reilly when he signed an offer sheet with the Calgary Flames. A contract that Joe Sakic never intended O'Reilly to get. After his first three NHL seasons, Ryan had never scored more than 18 goals, his highest assist total was 37 and never got higher than a +4 and In 6 playoff games, he

A Look at the 1st Round for the Flyers

It was a long wait, but Draft day arrived. One of the most anticipated draft in years arrived Friday night, but just for the first round. And what a first round it was. We watched future Star, Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel go number one and number 2 respectively.   As Dylan Strome was select at #3 which came as a surprise to many, the pieces fell in the correct place for the Flyers. Earlier this week GM Ron Hextall stated he was targeting Defenseman Ivan Provorov who was ranked at the Top Defen

No Cup for You!

Last night, the Chicago Blackhawks hoisted the Stanley Cup. Even though it was the Blackhawks’ third title in six seasons, it was the first time in 77 years that Chicago won the Cup on home ice. The events of this week make a look back at the 1938 Finals seem very appropriate. To say the least, that series was one of the most unusual in history.   The 1937-38 Black Hawks posted a dismal 14-25-9 record in the regular sea

All in the Family

Every summer, NHL teams take their picks of the top prospects in the game. Today, the entry age is 18, but until 1979, the lower limit was 20. The reduction in the eligibility age resulted from the NHL-WHA merger since the WHA did not have a minimum draft age. The upstart league’s draft policy led to one of the most famous and unlikely examples of family member teammates.   Following the 1970-71 Gordie Howe retired afte

Possible FA targets for the Flyers?

With the Stanley Cup Finals just less than a week away, some teams are still looking to sign their UFA and RFA forwards. Early this week, it was reported that the Flyers have finally begun contract talks with pending RFA Michael Del Zotto. The Flyers also need to re-sign Chris Vandevelde and Ryan White who are both set to become UFA.   White played pretty well in his first season with the Flyers. In 34 games, White registered 6 goals and 6 assists and only racked up 34 min in penalties. White, I

A Pox on Their Houses

We hockey fans remember all too well the last time the Stanley Cup was not awarded. A decade later, the feelings of anger and betrayal are still very real to many. It is much less likely that the average fan could name the only other year since the inception of the trophy that no Stanley Cup champion was crowned. If you find yourself unable to do so, do not feel bad, because it was nearly a century ago, and the reason it happened makes the importance of the 2004-05 loc

The State of the Flyers (Part II )

Part II Today I’m going to go over the current roster and who I think should stay and who should go just based on my observations from the past few seasons. The Flyers have a decent core to build around to become a contender in the future. Obviously we begin with Captain Claude Giroux who finished 13th in the league in pts (25G 48A). He is the center piece for the team. He was able to help his line mate Jakub Voracek breakout into a career year finishing 5th overall in NHL pts with 81. Those two

The State of the Flyers (Part I )

Looking back at this past Flyers’ season, it’s one we could all easily forget. As we gain hope for the future, this team still has a lot of work ahead of them. However, it’s not as bad as it seems. I’m going to talking about the current roster, possible moves, and the draft in what I have as a 3 part series. However, the Flyers made a splash today announcing their 19th head coach. So we will begin part I of this series with this. I was driving to the beach this morning while listening to the rad

Here Come the Rhinos!

There have been many clever and – ahem – interesting franchise proposals across the map of professional sports. Memphis once campaigned for an NFL team to be named the Hound Dogs in honor of its most famous resident. The Miami Marlins were almost named the Flamingos. And, would you believe that the NBA almost had a member franchise known as the Boston Unicorns? As creative and bizarre as some franchise proposals have been over the years, few can lay clai

The Strange Case of Tiger Williams

Some players seem to spend more time in the penalty box than on the ice. Sometimes called enforcers, goons, or thugs, these players are generally known more for their physicality and fighting than for their scoring touch. However, there are exceptions to this, of which the most extreme may be Dave "Tiger" Williams. The all-time NHL career leader in penalty minutes, Williams led the league in PIM three times, and six times eclipsed 300 penalty minutes in a season. In 962 career gam

The Legacy of the WHA

The history of top level North American professional sports is littered with the debris of numerous upstart leagues that burst onto the scene to challenge the “big kids” on the block. Some, most notably the American Football League, which accomplished a full merger with the NFL, have been quite successful, while others have disappeared after only a season or two, leaving little trace of their existence. The success of such leagues can be measured in many d

Remembering the Forgotten

“Do you believe in miracles? YES!” That iconic call from legendary broadcaster Al Michaels gave one of the most memorable moments in U.S. sports history its name: “The Miracle on Ice. Thanks to the Cold War and the animosity between the United States and the Soviet Union, many people in areas that barely knew the meaning of the word ice – and who certainly were not hockey fans – watched the game and can tell you exactly where they were when they heard that quote from Michaels. The Best That Never Was

Most great players have at least one signature moment they are remembered for. Maurice Richard is remembered for his 50 goals in 50 games. Ray Bourque is remembered for jubilantly hoisting the Stanley Cup at the very end of his Hall of Fame career. Ken Dryden will always be remembered for leading his team to the Stanley Cup title and winning the Conn Smythe Trophy before his Calder winning rookie campaign. It is most unusual to find a case in which one of the greatest players in h

A Night with the Stars

The annual NHL All-Star Game is a favorite event for many fans. The festivities span an entire weekend and include the Skills Competition, and in years past, a young stars game. The format has changed over the years – it began as a matchup between the reigning Stanley Cup champions and all-stars from the other teams, turned into a matchup between conferences, went through a stage when it was North America against the world, and now has the flavor of a pickup game where team captai

The First Crack in the Iron Curtain

“An iron curtain has fallen across the continent.” Those words from Winston Churchill's “Sinews of Peace” speech introduced one of the most well-known terms of the Cold War era. The former British Prime Minister – then leader of the Opposition – spoke accurately of the iron curtain. In some ways, the curtain could be looked at as an actual physical object because of the border defenses set up between the nations of the Western and Eastern blocs. The curtai

Deadline Day Winners!

The 2015 NHL Trade Deadline has come and gone. Trades were a plenty, but some of the big fish expected to be dealt were not. General managers took a bit more conservative approach and did not fly off the handle with too many deals. Although the deals were somewhat minor there were some deadline day winners. Anaheim Ducks Ducks general manager Bob Murray went after the key aspect that wins championships, DEFENSE. The Ducks bolstered their blueline by adding defenseman James Wisniewski, Simon Desp

Blockbuster Trade May Create Fantasy Options

Blockbuster Trade May Create Fantasy Options There are fewer and fewer blockbuster trades in the salary cap NHL. This week when the Winnipeg Jets and Buffalo Sabres worked out a massive seven player deal fans were amazed, and some fantasy owners looking for help had thoughts run through their head? Later in the day the Sabres also dealt their starting goalie Jhonas Enroth to the Dallas Stars. It was like a mini trade deadline day. The truth is this deal will have little impact on fantasy tea

Leafs Officially in Full-Rebuild Mode

Leafs Officially in Full-Rebuild Mode Toronto Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan has received approval from the Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment board to initiate a complete and full rebuild. Reports from Cathal Kelly of the Globe and Mail - New Leafs president Brendan Shanahan was hired with a mandate to remake the team. From very early on, he’d realized that if the club aspired to be a Stanley Cup contender, it required a major overhaul. But he needed the evidence of the season to pers

Erik Johnson out - forcing an O'Reilly deal?

If the season was starting to slowly get better for the Colorado Avalanche, it just took another blow. The Colorado Avalanche will be without their number one defensemen, Erik Johnson, for the next 3-8 weeks. Missing vital games that could make or break Colorado’s playoff hopes and season. Johnson is tied for first in the NHL among defensemen with his career high 12-goals. Johnson cannot talk to the media due to the injury and Colorado’s organizational rules, but Coach Patrick Roy stated, “John

There are thousands of records in the NHL and nearly one is broken every night. The latest though is in the all-time goals scored category. Sitting at 20th all-time was Mr. Mike Bossy, a gentlemen that only played 10 NHL season and only 752 games. Mike played his entire career in a New York Islanders sweater wearing #22 after being picked 15th overall in 1977’s amateur draft. Mike helped the New York Islanders to four Stanley cup championships four years in a row. The 6’0” 185lbs right-winger kn

Frustrated Phaneuf Fights for Respect

The Toronto Maple Leafs are on a six game losing streak, and team captain Dion Phaneuf has totally lost his composure. The play of Phaneuf has been in question for years in Toronto, and the questions are becoming more and more prevalent. Not only is the respect of a captain in Toronto coming into question. The respect of Dion Phaneuf throughout the league has now been brought to the limelight. Just two nights ago, Phaneuf dropped the gloves with Carolina Hurricanes captain Eric Staal. This was i

Colorado on the rise

The Colorado Avalanche has found a spark inside themselves and it has come at the perfect time. The Avalanche entered the New Year knowing they needed to win and losing was no option. Since December 11th, the Avalanche are 8-3-2 and have moved up in the standing and sit only four points out of a wild card playoff spot. The Avalanche has pulled above .500 for the first time this season and with back to back wins sit two games above, a place they look to stay and build on. Semyon Varlamov looks to
