10 Mid-Season Statistical Shockers

10 Mid-Season Statistical Shockers   -       Alex Ovechkin is 3rd in NHL +/-.  A far cry from his past seasons horrible numbers.  Ovechkin is an impressive +21.  The league leader is Los Angeles Kings Tyler Toffoli at +23, and second is held by rookie Dylan Larkin of the Detroit Red Wings at +22. -       Chicago Blackhawks secret rookie Artemi Panarin leads the rookie point chase with 1

Pending UFA Staal all Quiet

Carolina Hurricanes first line center Eric Staal is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, and it is hard to believe that the star will make it to free agency.  All signs are showing that a contract will not be signed in Carolina.  If a resigning were to happen I would think that it would have happened by now.  The Hurricanes are off to a 19-18-7 (45 Points) record.  Although they are just two points out of a wildcard position the prospect of the H

Midseason NHL Awards

We are approximately halfway through the 2015-16 NHL season, and this is a point that we frequently see awards predictions given. As such, I want to make some predictions of my own, and tell you who I think would win the Hart, Norris, Vezina, Selke, and Calder Trophies if the season ended today. A couple of these are the same as what I predicted in the preseason, but others have changed. So, without further ado, here are the guys I think are worthy to pose with the trophies after the awards banq

Ten Teams Out of the Playoffs

Ten Teams Out of the Playoffs   As Christmas draws upon us many teams are asking Santa for a ticket to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Unfortunately the play of some teams this year has earned them a ticket right out of the playoffs. Here are the 10 NHL teams that I believe will not make the playoffs this year.   1- Columbus Blue Jackets – 29 pts Eastern Conference – The Blue Jackets season has been a complete nightmare. A terrible start, lead to a coaching changes that brought in John Tortorella.

Hall of Snubs

All fans love to see their favorite teams find a diamond in the rough. Sometimes, it happens in the form of a guy who was chosen in a late round of the draft and then defies all projections to become a star. Other times, a guy who went undrafted leaves us all to scratch our heads as to how he was overlooked when he strings together a long, respectable career. In this post, I want to look at the rarest of these players -- those who went from undrafted free agent to Hall

War in Columbus, Johansen vs Tortorella

War in Columbus, Johansen vs. Tortorella   Contract problems, coach confrontation, and healthy scratches. Columbus Blue Jackets forward Ryan Johansen has experienced all of the above this season. The season has been a complete circus on and off the ice for the Columbus Blue Jackets. Now the war is on between newly hired head coach John Tortorella, and young superstar Ryan Johansen.   Johansen’s play has been heavily criticized this year. His biggest critic has been his coach. Johansen has

On the Edge of Life and Death

We all know that hockey can be a dangerous game. Anyone who has watched the sport for any significant amount of time has no doubt witnessed at least one fairly significant injury. Those injuries can sideline a player for weeks or months, and can sometimes even end a career. In 1989, an injury nearly cost Clint Malarchuk his life. This is his story and the story of the miracle workers that saved his life.   Malarchuk was

The Professor's Power Rankings, December 4

This week we have a couple of teams making huge surges to crack the top ten. We have some teams holding on to high rankings because of others around them falling or because of gaps in the standings. Are we starting to see a shakeup taking place?   #30 Carolina Hurricanes (Last Week: 25; -5)   The Hurricanes have lost their last three games, losing two of them by three or four goals. They are in a four-way tie for the fewest points in the standings, and they are the coldest of those four teams, g

Top 10 NHL Teams to Watch on Television

Watching hockey is a nightly ritual for many hockey fans. But, lets face it some teams are more fun to watch than others. There are many reasons that make some teams more enjoyable to watch. It might be how fast and exciting they are, or how bad they may be. Hockey is an amazing sport to watch live, but for many fans the television is where they get their hockey fix. Here are the top 10 teams I look forward to watching on television. 10 – Toronto Maple Leafs – The Leafs are that team that you c

Have a Hart

It is rare that a defenseman is nominated as a Hart Trophy finalist, and even rarer that the trophy is awarded to a blueliner. Chris Pronger was the last d-man to win the Hart, and before that, you have to go back to Bobby Orr. Before that, you have to go all the way back to Babe Pratt in 1944, 11 years before the introduction of the Norris trophy.   That was not always the case. Nine of the first 21 Hart Trophies were

The Professor's Power Rankings, November 27

This week we see the collapse of a surprise team, and a surprising surge into the top five. Plus, we see the early season's worst team continue a fairly impressive climb. Read on to find out who is at the top of the list and who made the biggest moves! #30 Edmonton Oilers (Last Week: 30; nc) The gap is not as large as it was last week, but the Oilers have not gained quite enough ground to move out of the cellar. Just like last week, they have lost five of six. That makes it very difficult to ri

The Professor's Power Rankings, November 20

I wrote these this afternoon, but I'm just now getting to post them, so they don't reflect tonight's game. Because of that, some things are going to be off, but hey, if it didn't change day to day, what would the fun be? Btw, this time, you guys are getting this before the readers of the website. We finally have a shakeup at the top of the rankings. We also see the apparent reversal of some previous trends. Who is the new number one? How far did the Canadiens fall? Who has seen their luck chang

Hamonic Trade Scenarios

Hamonic Trade Scenarios   Underrated defenseman Travis Hamonic has requested a trade from the New York Islanders. With the support of General Manager Garth Snow, and team captain John Tavares, Hamonic stated personal reasons as his reason. Hamonic is a 25 years old, and is in the third year of a seven-year contract. The contract pays him $3,857,142 dollars a season. Which is a steal for the consistency you receive from Hamonic.   “The root of all this is a personal family matter of mine that I h

The Professor's Power Rankings, November 12

This week's rankings see a shuffle near the top, a seemingly inevitable new team at the bottom, the continuing slow rise of an expected power and a couple of upstarts, and they return of a surprising member of the top 10. Do I have your attention? If so, let us dive into the fast-paced world of the NHL to see who is up and who is down. #30 Toronto Maple Leafs (Last Week: 29; -1) It seemed inevitable that Toronto would eventually land here. They were only one spot higher for the last two weeks.

Superstars Testing Patience

Superstars Testing Patience   When fantasy hockey owners prepare for the draft there is a group of players that are basically guarantees. Well sometimes they just don’t pan out, and this year seems to be one of those years. For some crazy reason there is a group of usually consistent point getters that just are not producing.   Many owners are impatient and wonder what they should do? Should they offer a trade? Or, should they just drop the struggling star? That would definitely be a last r

Lest We Forget

November 11 is a holiday in many nations around the world, including the United States and Canada. It is not a holiday celebrated by the exchange of gifts or a cookout and meal as so many others are, but is one in which we are asked to reflect upon the sacrifices of others. Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Canada trace their roots back to the armistice of the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918 when hostilities on the

Feast or Famine: Arizona Coyotes

Feast or Famine: The Arizona Coyotes 2015-16 Season   The early additions of Max Domi and Anthony Duclair to the roster have seen superb returns through 13 games for the young Arizona Coyotes. A 6-6-1 record leaves the impression of a team still in the thick of a rebuild. Obviously, the 2nd worst team last season doesn’t inspire visions of raising Lord Stanley’s Cup, but so far they have not conceited to the early predictions of a race for Arizona’s own Austin Matthews as the #1 pick in n

Performing at Peak Production

In today's NHL, pairs of high-scoring teammates are celebrated by media and fans alike. Combinations such as Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf, or the Sedin twins are plastered on TV screens, magazine covers, websites, and anything else you can imagine. It is easy to understand why. Goals are exciting, and players than score or set them up in bunches are fun to watch.   Today's best one-two p

Who's Hot and who's Not - East

Who’s hot and who is NOT Eastern Conference – Week 2   Fire, Fire! FIRE!!!!   Let us keep the Montreal Canadians on top here, at 10-2-0 and 20 points, Montreal continues to impress and make noise in the each. At this point, they still remain the top contender in the each for a playoff run. Carey Price, who has been amazing, will be sidelined with a lower body injury. Hopefully for the Habs, this is nothing serious and they can continue their impressive run. 3-0-0 Mike Condon looks to sett

Goals! - Zip, Zero, Zilch

Goals! – Zip, Zero, Zilch   With most NHL teams about ten games into the season, many coaches and general managers are looking at their teams stats and shaking their heads. The amount of star players that have yet to record a goal is astonishing. Teams spend millions and millions of dollars each year for star players to produce on the score sheet. When ten games go by without a goal, it raises some concerns. Here is a list of NHL star players that have yet to record a goal.   Ryan Getzlaff –
