Heading to the Shark Tank!

First a quick comment on Hawks last game Sunday night against the Flames ... Can you say 'the great escape'? You can bet Calgary will not let a game like that get away from the them again. Big Hoss scores the tying goal with 2.4 ticks of the clock left and then Kaner wins it for the Hawks in a shootout. Additionally the Razor was sharp in net making 45 of 47 saves setting a new career high in saves. Tonight, the beloved face the Sharks who are coming into tonight's game at 7-1-1 after dropping

Coyle Debut; Wild get Aggressive Early

Coyle Debut; Wild Get Aggressive Early in Short Season Tonight the Minnesota Wild look to win their first road game of the season at the Jobbing.com arena as they face off against the Phoenix Coyotes. While the Wild definitely need the two points, there are bigger story lines at work tonight. The Wild started the season off strong, before being absolutely dominated by Ducks in Anaheim on Friday. With any momentum gone, and the Wild struggling to score goals (Yeah, I know, they’ve never had that

Are the San Jose Sharks For Real

With seven games now under their belt it seems like there might be no stopping the San Jose Sharks, but is this year’s team a real contender or is history likely to repeat itself. The Sharks have started off the season a league best 7-0-0, a franchise record, but although this may be the best start the Sharks have had don’t hold your breath just yet. The Sharks have been no stranger to strong seasons or even post-season play, but as history as shown, it is once they make the playoffs that things

Roller Coaster Ride

Seven games into the young 2013 NHL half season you can see a trend developing for the Buffalo Sabres. Up and down play will likely be norm in Buffalo. To start the season the Sabres looked good beating Philly 5-2 and Toronto 2-1 to start the season. Then losing four in a row before beating the Bruins 7-4 last night in an up and down game. Sabres fans have to try to not get to low or to high this season. The Sabres are a team that will finish in that 6-10th place range in the Eastern Confer

Hey, Let's Get Wild!

Tonight the Hawks will see the 'new' Wild in which the organization surprised most of the NHL by grabbing both of the highest sought after free-agents over the summer Zach Parise and Ryan Suter. These two signings drastically changed the dynamic of what was a pretty dull hockey team. Parise is one of the NHL's better scorers and is an awesome forechecker. And Hawks fans are too familiar with Suter's defensive skills from his time in the land of the Grand Ole Opry. The Wild escaped with a 3-2

6-0 Start for the Mighty Blackhawks

Been a long time since I've posted so, here goes my first post of the shortened season. Wow a 6-0 start for the Mighty Blackhawks, can you believe it? I don't, and I could not imagine the Hawks starting the 2013 campaign at 6-0. So it’s six in a row to start the year and now the beloved embark on a pretty nasty looking six game road trip (it looks even nastier with travelling to the undefeated Sharks on February 5th). Although, I love the Hawks start, let me remind you that the primary focus is

Leafs Collapse After Strong First Period Against Islanders

Leafs celebrate after jumping to an early lead, before allowingfive unanswered goals PHOTO: NHL.com Another late surge by the Toronto Maple Leafs isn't nearly enough to get back into a game where they gave up five unanswered goals after jumping to an early 3-1 lead. The Leafs would ultimately lose the game by a score of 7-4. A reoccurring theme for the Maple Leafs over the last several seasons is the inability to play a 60 minute game. Tonight was a display of just that. The Leafs were all over

The history of the World Hockey Association

I was fifteen years old when the WHA folded, I remember getting my hockey cards the following year, opening packs up and looking with confusion at cards such as Morris Luckowich Winnipeg Jets, Dave Dryden of the Edmonton Oilers and Andre Lacroix of the Hartford Whalers, not sure who they were, who the teams were or what the hell they were doing in the packs taking up space as I looked for my Dale McCourt and Reed Larson cards. Over the years I have made it a hobby of mine to study the game we

5 San Jose Sharks to Watch in 2013

Last season was unfamiliar territory for the San Jose Sharks, scrapping through the season and only clinching a playoff spot at the very end. This year, a slow start in a 48-game schedule could be the difference between a summer of hockey and one on the golf course. For San Jose to keep the playoff streak alive, they must get contributions from all members. Here are 5 players to watch on the 2013 San Jose Sharks: 5.) Brian Burke: The Style That Killed Him

Much of the hockey world is still in shock with the recent and very sudden firing of Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager Brian Burke. Burke took the job back in November of 2008 and after failing to get the Toronto Maple Leafs into the playoffs, the newly appointed owners of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Bell and Rogers decided that they had enough with Burke and made the decision to fire him. Now many reasons for the firing have been suggested including some belief that Burke was no longer intereste

Gone With The Wind: Sayonara Scott Gomez.

Today, Montreal GM Marc Bergevin announced that Scott Gomez had played his last game for the Habs. The newly appointed General Manager say he spoke to Gomez around 7:30 this morning and told him to sit this one out. The remainder of his contract will be bought out this summer, when the Amnesty Buy out clause comes into affect. Where he will not be missed on the ice, he will however be missed in the locker room, where Gomez was a team leader. "Unfortunately, the personal side of the game is rea

Down on the Farm

With the NHL Lockout now in its 103rd day I have found myself following the Sabres AHL affiliate the Rochester Americans for my hockey fix. The Amerks roster has a lot of players that have/will be playing for the Sabres at some point this season or next year. For those fans that are interested I thought I would give another update how some prospects are doing so far this year. First off the Amerks themselves as a team are 14-11-2-1 through 28 games. They sit 10th in the Western Conference in

Edmonton Oilers: Are They Drafting Right?

With the World Junior Championships about to get underway in Ufa, Russia one NHL team seeing some of its future stars in action is the Edmonton Oilers. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins for Team Canada and Nail Yakupov for Team Russia are both suiting up for their respective teams and captaining them as well. In recent years the Oilers have had a large representation at the tournament. The likes of Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, Sam Gagner, and Magnus Paajarvi have all represented their fellow countries, all out

Operation Hat Trick is a Great Success

Even the NHL lockout wasn’t able to keep some of the league’s best players off the ice. Members of fifteen NHL teams hit the ice Saturday night as part of Operation Hat Trick to help raise money for victims of Hurricane Sandy. Over 10,000 fans were in attendance, making this the largest sold-out event at Boardwalk Hall since reopening in 2001 and the first sold-out hockey event since 1933. Interestingly enough, that last event in 1933 was also a fundraiser; the New York Rangers came to town to
