How the Devils Stole Ilya Kovalchuk From Atlanta

Usually when trades are made, each team tries to give the other team something of value – something they want – if only to be able to make a deal with that team again. But in reality, your team is trying to rob the other team blind — kind of like what happened to the Atlanta Thrashers when they traded the best player of their short-lived franchise’s life to New Jersey for a less-than stellar package of players and draft picks. Sure, draft picks can be very valuable, but they are only valuable if

Gary Bettman: A Cancer to the NHL

Over the past week we have the seen the likes of Ian White and now, Kris Versteeg voice their displeasure not just with the lockout, but also with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. White and Versteeg have both stated that they believe that the NHL has gone down hill with Bettman at the helm. So, this has brought up the question, when the lockout finally comes to an end will we see the end to the Bettman era? Since Bettman first took the reigns of the NHL back in 1993 the NHL has seen the players ge

Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2013

This past Monday saw the induction of another 4 of the greatest players to ever play the game into the Hockey Hall of Fame. The Hall saw the likes of Mats Sundin, Joe Sakic, Adam Oates, and Pavel Bure take their spot among the game's greats. Now with that in mind lets take a look at some of the players who may get their call come next year. Brendan Shanahan (HFD/DET/NJ/STL/NYR) Brendan Shanahan was a dominate force on the ice and in his prime was one of the most dangerous goal scorers in t

A Deal: Are We Close or Not?

This week has been full of optimism from everyone still following the on-going battle to see a resolution to the NHL lockout. The lockout that has now claimed the first month of the season. This week the NHLPA and the NHL met four times and for the first time in weeks it seems that for once both sides were actually negotiating rather than giving each other ultimatums. However, after the negotiations that lasted nearly 20 hours, through Tuesday-Thursday ,showed much promise the meeting that laste

My one and only lockout blogpost

I'm tired of reading about the lockout. It is just fueling my continued hatred for the way things work in this league. So here is my one and only blog post until all of this ridiculous crap is over. Regardless of whether there are games this season or not, I will not be buying tickets, merch, gamecenter live, etc. from the NHL for this season or next. I suggest you do the same. The reason this lockout has been drawn out so long is because the NHL and NHLPA know that whenever hockey does resume,

Are the Wild the Heat of the NHL? No.

The dust has settled since the most memorable 4th of July in the Minnesota Wild’s short history, and I can’t help but reflect on how everything transpired. It really reminds me of when LeBron James and Chris Bosh went to the Miami Heat in 2010. Isn’t what Zach Parise and Ryan Suter did just a mirror image of the Miami Heat two years ago? The answer to my painfully sarcastic question is undoubtedly, no. I have heard people ask me that question, and I’ve read articles on the interweb relating

Where in the World

As we continue on this path known as the NHL Lockout, I figured I would give an update on the status of Sabres players and prospects playing around the world. I was able to pull myself into the mood of writing about hockey for the first time in three months today. I went to the Rochester Americans vs Hamilton Bulldogs game a couple weeks ago in downtown Buffalo to get my hockey fix. Seeing some current and future Sabres players play made me wonder about the other Sabres players playing around

Why the Optimism?

This past Thursday was supposed to mark the start to the 2012-2013 season, but of course thanks to the lockout we wait until a deal is reached. Now in the past few weeks some players have voiced their optimism of a new deal coming together before the entire season is wiped out, while others continue to believe there is no deal in sight. So, why is this? Sidney Crosby this week was one of the few players who made it clear that he thinks the entire season won't be lost. Crosby stated, "I can't see

The Lockout: a Forced Retirement

So far the NHL has cancelled games up until October 24th so most of the season could still be played out and games that have already been cancelled could still be tacked on to the end of the season, barring a deal is finally reached. However, assuming this doesn't come to light, certain players may be more impacted than others. One name that comes to mind is all-star goaltender and future hall-of-famer Martin Brodeur. At the end of last season rumours swirled all over that Brodeur may be playing

What is the Best Use of the Lockout?

With the lockout still underway we have seen players take to playing elsewhere, I guess when you grow up loving the game and playing it for a living you will do whatever you can to keep playing. However, is this necessarily the best decision for players? This week we have seen the likes of players such as Evgeni Malkin, Pavel Datsyuk, and Ilya Kovalchuck put up good numbers for the clubs they have been playing with over in the KHL, but is this the best use of their time off from the NHL? Rangers

A Sign of What's Not to Come

It has been a very busy last week and a half with many more NHLers flocking to Europe to find somewhere to play some hockey. In this past week alone Danny Briere, Claude Giroux, Joe Pavelski, Gabriel Landeskog, Andrei Markov, Zdeno Chara, Patrice Bergeron, Jamie Benn, and Matt Duchene have all packed their bags and headed to Europe. Now with news coming from sports outlets such as ESPN and recently Sportsnet that they will now be broadcasting some KHL games this season this may give a little hop

A Few Lockout Details Explained

October 5th 2012 – Every day it seems like we are learning something new about the lockout whether it be from the NHLPA side or the Owners but a lot of people don’t fully understand every aspect of information that is thrown at them so here are a few confusing details explained. NHL’ers playing in the KHL aren’t taking money from KHLers just ice time “Our clubs have been granted the opportunity to enter into contracts and place on their main rosters no more than three NHL players, and the previo

2013 Cup Contenders

The Montreal Canadiens’ organization will be competing for a Cup during the 2012-2013 season. Am I a crazy “homer” of a Habs fan? Have I been drinking the Kool-Aid on the Brandon Prust and Francis Bouillon signings? No, I’ve been pretty straightforward with my expectation of another potentially difficult and long season in Montreal, barring a succession of 2-3 significant trades (unlikely.) However, that won’t deprive Habs fans of following what looks to be a promising and highly intriguing

Leafs Burke is Running out of Scapegoats

September 18th 2012 - His arrival was one of the most highly anticipated and welcomed arrivals of any sports figure in recent Toronto memory. When Brian Burke took over as GM of the Maple Leafs it was seen as the end of incompetence in Leafs Nation. Burke arrived in November 2008 and assured Torontonians that there would be no need to wait for a 5 year rebuild, as he says “I'm not interested … in a five-year rebuild like some of these teams have done”. Well Burke we are onto year 4 and no result

Five Pucks- Around the NHL 9/7/2012

Five Pucks- 9/7/2012 Puck 1- Shane Doan, Greg Jamison, and the Phoenix Coyotes It has come out over the past day the Shane Doan has a deal in place to remain with the Phoenix Coyotes. I know, easily the most shocking news of the summer (yep, that’s sarcasm. Nobody should be surprised… at all). Now, this deal between Doan and the Coyotes is contingent on Jamison’s ability to buy the Coyotes, which appears likely as it has been reported that he has secured the money through partners and investors.

Toronto Maple Leafs: In Need of a Bounce Back

Tuesday September 4th 2012 – If you played on the Toronto Maple Leafs last season chances are you either had an excellent season or a bad one, very few players were in between. Players like Kessel, Lupul, Phaneuf, Grabovski and Gardiner had excellent seasons. Players like Komisarek, Connolly, Kulemin, Liles, Reimer and Cody Franson all had bad years. There were some players who didn’t exactly disappoint (Macarthur,Bozak) but didn’t have a season to brag about either. Phil Kessel led the way for

Lazy Summer Days

Its late August, another lockout is threatening the start of the season and there is barely any hockey news going on. So here we are to give you my favorite 5 moments from Mad Mike Milburys life because I just don’t feel like being the 100th person to write a potential lockout article. If you don’t know who Mike Milbury is just Youtube him and sit back and enjoy. He played over 750 games for Boston in the NHL and coached for the Bruins and Islanders and also served as general manager of the Isla

Habsguy26 Future Watch Part 4: The Pacific

Hello again! Welcome back to my Future Watch! This time, we'll be scouring the Pacific division of the Western Conference for top prospects. NEW in Part 4 is NHL comparisons. I have gone back to Parts 1, 2 and 3 to put them in. Go back and check it out! Unfortunately, not a lot of big names stand out but upon digging in I found the talent is there and although the Pacific isn't quite as loaded as other divisions like the North East or the Central, it will be an exciting division to watch in the
