  1. I hate the idea of a year-long lockout but (I think) I hate guaranteed contracts even more. Regarding Jake, Jack makes a good point, you win with proven talent and though G/Jake aren't quite Toews/Kane with a better team around them I believe they're both capable of leading the offense to a Cup. For a long stretch of the season those 2 led the league in points - I forget the exact stats but G/J is a lethal combination. I don't think Voracek is worth anywhere near 8 million a year but if 7 million is what it takes the Flyers are better off with him than without him. I guess the main thing is finding a winger who will complete that line.
  2. I don't see how Voracek's ES production is a problem. Last season half of Voracek's goals came on the PP - 11 PP / 11 ES = 22. The year before, 8 PP / 15 ES = 23. I can't find his assists breakdown. At even strength his line mates aren't exactly snipers....Raffl, BSchenn....can't remember who else. If the Flyers can find or develop a winger for that top line Voracek's ES assist totals will go up. His goal-scoring at ES isn't a problem - unless I'm missing something. I hope he's not expecting an $8mil/year offer. He should get ~$32mil over 5 years - something along those lines.
  3. Apparently. A guy that big and strong who's proven he can play with Getzlaf - on a team with unlimited potential to win more Cups - and he gets himself benched. That's a red flag if there ever was one.
  4. yeah the 2010 series the Hawks were just better, the Flyers were out of gas, couldn't score etc. but STINKLE not paying attention, that stings, even 30+ years later. "and thank you so much for bringing up such a painful subject. While you're at it, why don't you give me a nice paper cut and pour lemon juice on it? We're closed!"
  5. haha that's good stuff - but what a damn shame about Dustin Penner. I remember how that Getz-Perry-Penner line tore it up for a few weeks...then I kinda lost track of the Ducks for a few months...when I started watching them again late in the season Penner was MIA. edit: the guy's got everything you want in a power fwd - everything except ... commitment? desire? whatever it is he's missing it.
  6. Ya I edited my post after watching it again - a giveaway for sure but the kind that happens quite a lot in hockey games. It really shouldn't have burned us so bad if Leighton had been awake. edit: and of course...Because Lindros.
  7. ancient history but wtf, let's relive it again! Aw c'mon Podes you can't put that on Powe. He made the right play, banged the puck hard up the wall (edit: sorry you're right, it wasn't hard up the wall...more like a pass to Campbell) but Campbell made the stop at the blue line. Kimmo tried to stay with Kane but Kane is Kane, got off the 90-degree angle shot that beats Sleepy Leaky Braindead Leighton. As far as I'm concerned nobody is to blame for that goal but the goaltender. What I didn't like about Powe on that play is what he does after Campbell has the puck, gets it to Kane. He just kinda floats in the slot and does nothing.
  8. Thanks Ron I always liked Powe - lots of hustle, hits hard, wonder if we'll get to see him in the O&B. Razor you're not saying a team can poach him tho right? Too bad Mr. Princeton never learned any moves, how to score. He's a fastfast skater but he's so straight-ahead it's like he has no creativity whatsoever. But with Hall gone maybe he slots into the 4th line with Rinaldo and ? - that could be fun seeing the bruising they put on the opposition.
  9. yep me too - and as everybody pointed out it's probably now or never for Mr. DZ.
  10. Hextall made a good move grabbing DZ - the Flyers needed somebody experienced, and quick. I always liked DZ with the Rangers under Torts but I guess he just didn't work out under AV. Who knows what the actual rap on the guy was - maybe it's true he was getting a big head. But after last season and the FA snub I highly doubt "attitude" will be a problem (at least until he goes a few months racking up points again lol). But I'm glad the Flyers got him for a year, it works out perfect for both parties if he plays great - and I think he will.
  11. Could be OR - but I thought this was the year Couturier was going to get more offensive zone starts, maybe even center the 2nd line. It's probably a tough call for Berube...Couturier is so good defensively you hate to move him. Plus who else can take his place if he moves up to the 2nd line? This year he should get more offensive zone time. Hitch did something similar with Carter the first year or 2 made him concentrate on D. The difference of course is Couturier really shined right away - so much the Flyers decided to leave him in a checking role....But this year hopefully he gets a long look as a scoring center - that is what he was touted to be wasn't it? Offensively gifted?
  12. Sure, except Hartnell is the textbook case for "it isn't all about the numbers." All the stuff in addition to the points is what defines Hartnell's game - some good some bad. RJ is a safer bet and we don't lose many points but I think the top line got easier to play against w/out Hartnell - unless BSchenn turns up the intensity and keeps it turned up (and if he gets the job of course).
  13. Yes, and giving it his all (and then some) to make a play - to read the opposing offense better than most in the NHL (particularly shorthanded) - to deliver KO hits that sometimes maybe were borderline but had an effect on the game - to win big draws - to make other players around him better ... Maybe he was a mopey interview and he probably rubbed the older vets the wrong way sometimes - but I'm glad for all his success in LA.
  14. I don't know if it's just you but it's definitely not me - lol! Seriously I can't see anything close to 30 goals out of RJ no matter who he plays with. In any case I hope they didn't bring him to skate top-line minutes. It's been awhile - a few years at least - since RJ hit his career-high of 26 goals. But I don't want to trash the guy - I always liked RJ and I like your post for the most part - he can be effective on the PP if he earns the time (we'll see). Defensively he's good, etc. But I'm not expecting much more than 40pts out of him....and maybe I'll be happily surprised!
  15. well the guy's a multi-millionaire so I imagine he'll be comfortable no matter where he is, even Columbus, Ohio.
  16. Well I sure won't argue against a reasonable approach like you just described. I was only saying RJ Umberger is still RJ Umberger. I feel good about Hextall running the show. If he traded Hartnell there must've been good reasons beyond his contract, because Hartnell's contract isn't that bad. 45-pt guys are getting $4mil+ nowadays - like RJ - so I figure it was something else - not the penalties either, something more fundamental that Hextall wants to see. Anyway it's a nice knowing Hextall has a proactive plan instead of a reactive one. The main thing for me is we finally got a goaltender now.
  17. Sure there is - 2nd line center. If he's healthy why wouldn't he center the 2nd line? Last season's demotion to the 4th line was the result of a combination of things (injuries, changing linemates every other game practically, VLC adjusting to a new team, new city) that, if the Flyers choose, won't be part of the picture again this year. The Flyers coaches can control where he skates and who he skates with. Vinny won't have the "I'm adjusting" excuse. That leaves the random injury bug. But VLC can control that to a certain degree by being in great shape, which will help prevent the types of injuries he usually gets. Berube has to play him at center if he wants anything out of the guy and the only spot is the 2nd line.
  18. I know we're beating a dead horse here but why do you keep saying "wait and see" and "let the guy play" before we decide? He's not an unknown quantity he's RJ Umberger who's seen plenty of games in the O&B. I guess you're saying "that was years ago" and maybe he's a different player now? Except that watching a handful of Jackets' games last year (mostly to see Bob) it's pretty obvious RJ is what he always was, a decent skater who hustles but just doesn't have much skill - either offensively or defensively. Ultimately I trust Hextall - the more I read the more convinced I am he's on a mission to weed out anyone who's commitment isn't 100%. Maybe he saw that in Hartnell (besides what he told the media) and figured at least RJ is dependable. He'll max out at 40, maybe 50 points but he's dependable and that's a good thing. Plus his contract is 2 years shorter.
  19. Have it your way but i don't need to "wait and see" with Umburglar. Of course there's upsides to the deal - I said exactly that - now do you want me to agree again that Hartnell had an especially lousy last few months? your comment about chemistry is silly OC - you should know it doesn't work like that. Maybe it did help a ton, and the Flyers would've really crashed and burned, missed the POs and panicked up a storm this summer. Come to think of it Hartnell probably saved us from Dan Boyle and who knows who else ! Maybe Jammer's right maybe his last few years on the contract will be abysmmal. But he could be wrong, maybe Hartnell creates, finds the right chemistry again in Columbus and puts up 25 or 30 goals. Because I don't buy that he's in a steady decline. "now he's gone, gone nothing's going t bring him back..he's gone." Hunter/Garcia
  20. yeh no kidding Hartnell had a crappy end to his season but even as a 20/50 guy (20G / 32A last year) I like him a lot better than Umberger. We get a 2 year repreive on Hartnell's contract but meanwhile we're stuck with RJ Umberger at basically the same price, same cap hit. On top of that the Flyers are no better now - I agree with Swede don't minimize chemistry, on and off the ice. Hartnell was one of the most well-liked players on the team. He took more than his share of dumb penalties but he drew a lot of them too. To me that's a wash and Berube is wrong to use that as a reason to trade him - if that's what he did (he said as much in the STH meeting right?) It's good to get out from under those last couple years but the Flyers aren't any better because Hartnell's gone and Umberger's in the O&B. If anything it's a step back, a pause, while we wait for RJ's shorter bad contract to expire.
  21. for sure - the Rangers deserve all your hate so hang onto that. But the Devils? Fk the Devils. We all know the Cups they won... and Brodeur is one of the greatest ever ... and the super-smart trap crap game courtesy of Lam and Lemaire - but I still can't take that team seriously. I keep waiting for them to fold up their pathetic show.
  22. yeah, but is that such a good thing? Well to be fair we don't yet know how far Raffl can go in the NHL but I'm one of the underwhelmed by Mr. Raffl so far. I like him as a 3rd/4th line grinder but it seems all the touches he gets go nowhere, or worse go back the other way. I don't mean to hammer the guy - he's new to the NHL - but it'd be nice to see his hard work pay off on the scoresheet this year - more than his 9G /13 A (68GP) from last season.
  23. I figure the key to those 3 is speed and playmaking off the rush - that's the way they'd put up big numbers. But if Chief tried it I sure don't remember it. And if he tries it again he better give them a solid 20 games together before judging them. If Read is good on the L side that line could be tremendous.
  24. ah-hem, yes Mr. Literal you are correct sir! He's no J. Quick - though nobody knows Mason's ceiling yet - but when I said "carry" I honestly wasn't thinking Conn Smythe post-season - I just meant he can carry his load, not be the weak link that's all. Whereas before Mason we all knew the Flyers were going no-fkn-where because of their goaltending. Lightning struck in 2010 and we almost squeaked out a Cup - but then it struck again at the worst possible time - ha! Mason, for Flyers' fans is a real change for the better, a breath of fresh air. Personally I was convinced during his first game in the O&B that his mindfk gunk was a product of Columbus, Ohio and it would leave his system quickly. It did. He won't be the reason the Flyers fail to win the Cup.
  25. isn't that strange but I can't remember anyone suggesting Read skate on the top line. And I don't recall any shifts he got with G and V last season. I don't know how locked-into the right side those guys are but you'd think 1 of them would gladly move over to keep his (or gain) big minutes. I think you're right those 3 could work up a storm together. It all depends on whether Read can take the LW - I think maybe Jake needs the right side more than Read does.
