Here is my answer from what I posted last night ...... I don't give a damn that they make millions of dollars ..... that goal was pure laziness.  Its one thing to lose when you are giving all your effort . That I can tolerate ....what I CANNOT tolerate is a bunch of lazy ass players not skating back on D.  Totally unacceptable ....like I said I don't give a damn what they make ..... I would make them skate after the game until they puke .....all of them.

Well it worked for Darryl Sutter with the Flames last week, he bag skated the Flames players and they rattled off 3 victories.

Yes that's true, but most other teams can say the same thing.

Example: Mats Sundin never terrorized opposing teams in Toronto... because he never had any wingers that could play with him except for one or two years when guys like Mogilny were around. Perhaps if you went back to the days of Gilmour, Clark, and Andreychuk in the early 1990's, the Leafs had a line that terrified opposing teams.

To be honest, when I look at the NHL, the only teams that ever ice lines like you're describing are:

    • Pittsburgh Penguins
    • Colorado Avalanche
    • Detroit Red Wings
    • (gears spinning already......)
    • I can't say the Montreal Canadiens because they haven't done it in my lifetime.
    • (gears really spinning......)
    • Los Angeles Kings (with Gretzky)
    • Edmonton Oilers (the dynasty years and now with McJesus)
    • New York Islanders (dynasty years)

It is really hard to find a team in the NHL that can put together a complete LINE (3 players) that actually terrify and overwhelm the opposition.

When the Leafs play other teams, there's no team or line out there that is "scary" compared to what we have up front. There's no line that can outplay Toronto's top line. There's no line that legit "scares" us.  It's sort of been that way for a few decades now. The talent is too spread around for teams to be able to compile 3 all-stars on a single line.

Does Toronto's top line qualify as a "Legion of Doom" calibre line?  I don't really see it the way fans of other teams see it, but I'm guessing they're "noteworthy" for opposing teams but not necessarily "scary" to opposing teams. Why? Well, because they're always split across multiple lines, so you never see our best forwards together unless it's a power play and that doesn't count as a standard forward line.

    :)

I'd say Boston's top line of Bergeron, Marchand and Pastrnak would give Toronto's top line a good run plus they play 200 foot game, have the speed to match and can play tough when needed to get the pucks out of the corner.

    Agreed.

For example..let's see a healthy Flyers roster play against the Bruins minus Pasternak/Marchand/Bergeron and 3 other starters.

Bruins fans may not be too happy with what the future holds either, that way.

True enough, even though Hart has looked like **** so has the rest of the team. Unfortunately, going on a prolong losing streak in a short season could be the difference in making or not making the playoffs. But the way the Flyers are playing even if they make the playoffs they'll go out in the first round. On a side note, do you see any OHL hockey being played this year?

Adding to the post-mortem of a season I ended up following closely, but not posting much about.

Overall, a very good first year for AV/Fletcher.

It's nice to see what an excellent coaching staff can accomplish.  That said, he had some down moments in the POs.  He had no answer for Trotz, but I wonder if that was more of a player execution thing.  I know he's not responsible directly for the PP, but it's poor PO performance reflects on AV.  Also, no one should allow him to challenge a play.

Hayes and Pitlick, two signings for which Fletcher received some criticism, were great additions to the team.  But, I question the wisdom of acquiring Thompson and Grant.  They contributed nothing, particularly in the POs.  I generally agree with the notion that some of the younger guys like Frost may not have been NHL ready (or at least were better served playing quality minutes in the AHL) and so I think it was better that they served time in the AHL.  But, Thompson and Grant can't play in the league (or at least on this team).  The speed and compete level of the game have passed them by.  Maybe they were the only options in the market.  I don't know.

It's a shame, but Giroux is not a top line player.  His best years are in the past.  He was never an exceptional skater and now the speed of the game and his age have caught up to him.  I don't question his desire.  I just don't think his body will do what his mind wants it to do.  I don't know what to do with him.  His recent years were wasted here with an ill-fated "retooling" and a coach who had no clue.  Feel bad for Claude.  Maybe he can do what Stevie Y did in his later years with the Wings and become more of a two-way or even a defensive player.

Voracek is maddening.  He looks great and then looks like ****.

I love Konency.  But, he needs to get his ass out of his head.  But, he's a high risk/high reward player.  You need guys like him.

I think this is Couturier's team now.  And, to a degree, Hayes' team.

As mentioned, I think Pitlick and also NAK and Laughton had very good showings.  Lindblom also blossomed.

Love Provorov and his work ethic.  Sanheim and Myers need to work on some things.  Myers has surpassed Sanheim, imo.  Niskanen had a good regular season, but looked gassed in the PO rounds.  Same with Braun, though I thought Braun had some poor games in the regular season too.  Hagg is decent for a 6th d-man.

Really think Fletcher has work cut out for him.  He needs to free up cap space to fix the bottom 6 and to add some scoring punch.  Have to rid ourselves of JVR and Ghost.  Fletcher talked about being active in the trade market.  If so, he's probably going to have to part with picks and prospects as well to get anything back that isn't just someone else's disappointing player.

At least he doesn't need a goaltender.  Great season for Hart and he's probably the brightest spot on the ice.  Would bring back Elliot as well.

Fletcher will have to be active to free up cap space. It's too bad that AV didn't sit Giroux for a game and bring in Frost just to see how he would do considering Giroux wasn't doing much. Provorov, Sanheim and Myers will get better with experience, it's nice to see that the Flyers finally have a goalie in Hart and hopefully they find him a quality backup (maybe Elliot for another year). Hayes was a pleasant surprise but hopefully lives up to his contract. The playoff experience will be good for the young players. Stay the course, give the younger players more important roles and put Giroux in a secondary role for the remainder of his contract and don't resign him.

Regardless i am glad the kids: Hart, Provorov, Sanheim, Lindblom, Farabee, NAK, Laughton and Myers the kids of the future got a taste of were their game needs to be if they want to go further in the hardest playoffs of all the sports.

What is to become of this team this offseason remains to be seen.

All i know i do not want Giroux, JVR and Jake to all three come back to this team...i would love two of the three to be gone...but i will have to accept if only one of the 3 is shown the door.

With the hard cap coming and some of the kid's needing new deals at the end of next year some of this huge salaries need to be spread around to them and start trimming some dead weight.

I agree with your first point, the young players got a real taste of what playoff hockey is all about which is a good thing. As for Giroux, Jake and JVR, I'd love to see 2 of them gone and replaced by young players. The Flyers have a good young core they just have to grow together. Hopefully the Islanders get bounced by the Lightning!

They keep this up and I smell a sweep there won't be no 7 games.

But I'm going to listen to you (God help me) and see what happens tomorrow since they haven't lost back to back games since January.

In the meantime you should preparing your second excuse....

    Trust The Bourbon

Well the Flyers finally get a goalie who keeps them in games to give them a chance to win and now they can't score, go figure. We'll see who shows up for game 2.

    I agree.

I'm sorry but i remember a whole lot of clutching and grabbing and i don't see the Flyers doing that i do see them leaning on guys when they are with the puck or about to receive it or are around the puck. Or they are reaching and getting stick on stick or on pucks or in the passing lanes.

But i have to admit it's what i wanted them to do to grind on the opposition and AV has got them playing aggressive hockey when it calls for it and when they got the lead they fell back and play more defense.

Is it more boring?? Maybe sure and who wouldn't like what i call sexy hockey - which i refer to just finding the twine ore often and lighting the lamp 3 or 4 times a game.

I get it but right now it looks like they are finding a way out of these they are going and finding their game and maybe still getting into game shape.

So if they keep going 1-0 or 2-0 and winning i'm good with it...as long as they keep stacking Ws.

If they can get this series over tonight maybe that would open them up for some practice time which is what they really need right now.

Am i concerned that Giroux, Coots, Hayes, Konecny and JVR are scoring goals and in the highlights every night yes i am.

But as long as they are winning i am going to live with it for now. But if they end up having to face an Isles team next round (not sure if that would be who it is) they my have to finding their scoring touch and will have to play a shutdown defensive system to play vs Trotz boys and this could prepare them.

Sorry for the long dribble but i got home late last night and watched the game till about 1:30 am.

    Go Flyers!

    Trust The Bourbon!!!!!

Let's hope the Flyers big boys break out tonight and finish off the Habs. It's time they help Hart who has helped them all series. Finish off those ***** Habs and send their fans back into the woods.

We were discussing this a bit on chat yesterday.

Ya, it sucks. The guy was given a clean bill of health just over a month ago. As mentioned above he was the 2nd best player in the league for a few years at the time Gretzky was amazing everyone.

We were fortunate enough to have him live and coach here in Barrie for the last 10 years. Any Winnipeg Jets fan knows he was THE FACE of the franchise. He was the youngest player to hit 100 points. The youngest to win the Calder. In his first season the Jets had a 48 point turnaround. One of the most memorable goals in hockey history at the 87 Canada Cup only happened because Hawerchuk won the draw...with Gretzky and Lemieux as his wingers.Just a great person and a class act all the way. RIP Ducky.

That's what I thought regarding his cancer. The 87 Canada Cup goal, it was Hawerchuk who hooked a Soviet player just enough to cause him to lose his balance which allowed Lemieux to slide in on a 3 on 1 and shoot the puck. He was always a classic act when his Colts would play the Sudbury Wolves in Sudbury. He will be solely missed in junior hockey.

Too soon? Seriously though, this kid is the real deal and should be our franchise goaltender for the foreseeable future so let's hope he takes care of himself and doesn't do anything stupid to jeopardize his  career.

I totally agree, Flyers management better make sure that he never drives a Porsche! It's nice to see the Flyers producing a homegrown goalie and has the potential to be like Lindbergh.

I want to see a fight, and a three goal, 3-0 first period by the Flyers. I could give a damn about the Habs running up the score, the Flyers flat out sucked today. They were completely dominated and played like a JV team.

I want to see the Flyers win the next 3 games because I hated the habs and their ***** fans!

Picked a good day to PVR the game and do something else with my day. Best result in a way: much better than a 2-1 loss in 5OT.

Yep nothing better then an ass kicking to leave a bad taste in your mouth! We'll see what these Flyers have. On the bright side they could easily be down 2 games to 0.

Well we all need to be honest with ourselves at least the ones who have followed the Flyers since the Dry Island days...

...we knew this was going to happen once these clowns secured the number one seed.

We knew they would rest on their laurels and think they could just breeze through these smurfs.

But what they under estimated was these smurfs work and no they have to make up for their lack of talent.

    And so far they have.

Now all is not lost. It's easy when you're winning.

Now through adversity we will find out what they are made of...

Well we'll see what they're made of, either they'll come out swinging or cuddle up into a ball and hide in the corner. It's time for a Flyer player to pull a Kreider on Price!

My suggestion: going with a 20-team format.

    • The top-3 teams in each division earn a play-off spot, same a usual.
    • Then I'd go with 4 WC spots. You add a wild-card round with #7-#10 and #8-#9 best-of-5 match-ups in each conference. Each division winner faces the WC round winner, with the lowest WC seed meeting the conference champion, and the highest WC seed meeting the second one (the other division winner)
    • Then, business as usual with an already built bracket.

That would have the advantage of bringing on more teams and strengthen the playoffs race with more teams involved. Moreover, you don't make huge changes to the current format.

With the number of teams up to 32 and the OT loser point, it's possible to reach like 96-97 points with 40+ wins and still miss the playoffs, while it was possible to enter them with a losing record in the early 90's. A little tweak would be good in that sense.

The only problem with that is the wildcard teams would already be in playoff mode by playing that best of 5 series where as the division winner would be sitting around waiting to see who they'd end up playing. Stick with the 16 team playoffs.

Well the Flyers got their assess handed to them today which isn't a bad thing, the whole team needed to be brought back down to reality. It's time for the coaches to earn their money and it's time for the top players on this team to earn their money also. Everybody knew the Habs would come out with the rally cry to win one for their coach. So now it's time for the Flyers to come out with a chip on their shoulders and take it to the Habs. Price is beatable so he's not a god so the Flyers have to stop treating him like one and get in his face. Also they have to start pounding the Habs!

I will probably miss a chunk of the game.  How the Habs react to Julien's situation is hard to predict--suspect, like Occ, they will be fighting like hell.

On a separate note, will AV run with Hart until hell freezes over or do we see Moose, especially if we take the first two?

I think AV will stick with Hart unless one game he's getting blown out then AV will put in Moose to give the kid a chance to regroup. As for the Habs, it's sad regarding Julien but the Flyers have to match the intensity in the 1st period today because you know the Habs will come out. Keep getting in the face of Price because eventually he'll snap and take a stupid penalty and the Flyers have to take advantage of powerplay opportunities and bury the Habs.

Flyers in 6. Price will steal a few. I expect a dirty, knarley, knock down series with multiple OTs. I also think Giroux is due. He's gonna GO OFF!! Great chance for Carter Hart to grow and evolve as a goalie. If he can beat his boyhood idol, he will realize he can beat anyone.

A good sign is the Flyers top players haven't scored yet they continue to win. Hopefully Hart outplays his idol and the Flyers take the Habs out in 4 or 5 games (because of Bettman's gimmick 24 team playoff, the Habs got to play in and they shouldn't have). Nice to see the Flyers getting in Price's face. 3 more to go!

Yup..I remember watching that unfold as I was watching it live on TV and Gene Hart's humorous commentary. :)  Gotta love Dave Brown shirtless .......

I remember that series and loved every minute of it. I can't stand the Habs mainly because of the dumbass fans that come out of the woodworks when they play in the playoffs. I'm hoping the Flyers sweep the Habs or taken them out in 5. So their dumbass fans can go back into the woods.

So i wonder if they would come back and finish the playoffs or just start right now and go straight into the playoffs.

Good thing the Flyers are sitting in the 2nd metro spot....for when they decide what they will do.

Either decision the Flyers should be fine.

If they were to decide to just start the playoffs then this wouldn't be good for the Isles who sit in the 9th spot but have played two less games than the Blue Jackets.

Out west the Canucks and Wild would be out.  So really waiting to see what they decide.

Depending when the NHL comes back I would think Bettman would have to decide on if it's going to be 70 game or 72 game season and the teams that haven't reached that mark and are on the playoff bubble would have to play the games to get to those game totals. Since teams haven't played the same amount games I assume they'd have to do something like that to make it fair for all teams in playoff contention or just on the outside looking in.

In fact I think the Leafs' EBUG should be born in 1967, as that's the last year they won the Cup. That would have a serious symbolic value, reminding them of what it takes to win the Cup.

Lol, well if that's the case then I'd qualify to be EBUG for the Leafs since I was born in 1967! Unfortunately for Leafs fans and team they'll be a punch line for jokes going forward.
