  1. NHL suspends Canadiens' Gallagher 5 games for illegal check Associated Press Jan 26, 2024, 05:54 PM ET NEW YORK -- Montreal Canadiens forward Brendan Gallagher has been suspended five games for an illegal check to the head of New York Islanders defenseman Adam Pelech. The NHL announced the suspension Friday after a disciplinary phone hearing with Gallagher, who was given a match penalty and ejected for hitting Pelech in the head with his right elbow midway through the third period of the teams' game Thursday night. Pelech did not return. In videos produced in English and French announcing the suspension, the league's department of player safety said Gallagher delivered direct and forceful contact to Pelech's head when he could have avoided doing so. Gallagher, 34, and now in his 12th season, had been fined once before in his career and not suspended before. Not considered a repeat offender under the collective bargaining agreement, he'll forfeit $169,271 in salary and miss games at Pittsburgh and Washington and against Dallas, St. Louis and Anaheim sandwiched around the All-Star break. Gallagher is eligible to return Feb. 15 at the New York Rangers.
  2. Gallagher to have phone hearing for actions in Canadiens game Forward facing discipline for illegal check to head against Islanders defenseman Pelech ByNHL.com @NHLdotcom 10:07 AM Brendan Gallagher will have a phone hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Friday. The Montreal Canadiens forward is facing discipline for an illegal check to the head against New York Islanders defenseman Adam Pelech on Thursday. The incident occurred at 11:52 of the third period of the Canadiens' 4-3 win at Bell Centre in Montreal. Gallagher’s elbow made contact with Pelech's head moments after the latter made a pass in the neutral zone. Gallagher was assessed a five-minute match penalty. Pelech left the game and did not return. The penalty was upheld upon an official's video review. The following grounds are being considered for supplemental discipline: illegal check to the head. However, the Department of Player Safety retains the right to make adjustments to the infraction upon review.

  5. Game # 48 Bos 3 Sens 2 OT Brad Marchand scores in overtime as Bruins beat Senators 3-2 ByAP Updated: Jan 25, 2024, 11:46 pm OTTAWA, Ontario -- — Brad Marchand scored at 1:48 of overtime and the Boston Bruins beat the Ottawa Senators 3-2 on Thursday night. The goal was Marchand's 396th — the fifth in four games — and moved him past Ray Bourque and into fifth all-time with the Bruins. “It’s special,” the 35-year-old Marchand said. “I try not to think too much about it, but it’s special. I never thought my career would come this far and some of the things that have gone on would have happened. “I’ve been extremely fortunate and very lucky to be part of a group that’s had a lot of success and a lot of phenomenal guys to learn from.” It was also Marchand's 19th career overtime goal, tying him with Jaromir Jagr for the third in NHL history, behind Alex Ovechkin (26) and Sidney Crosby (20). David Pastrnak and Trent Frederic also scored for the Atlantic Division- and Eastern Conference-leading Bruins. Jeremy Swayman stopped 35 shots. “I think the biggest thing is finishing off a game that looked like an uphill battle sometimes,” Swayman said. “And it’s really special to get a back-to-back and finish it in overtime, so huge congrats to (Marchand) passing some pretty great names. So really, really good feel-good win for us.” Thomas Chabot and Vladimir Tarasenko scored for the Senators. Joonas Korpisalo made 20 saves. Ottawa was trailing 2-1 when Josh Norris thought he had tied the game at 13:18 of the third. But, officials determined a hand pass was involved. The Senators did come back to tie the game at 2-all with a power-play goal at 16:42, when Tarasenko sent a shot past Swayman. Leading 1-0 after one period, Boston extended its advantage at 8:19 of the second when Frederic beat Korpisalo high to the blocker side. The Senators cut the lead to one with a late power-play goal. Drake Batherson made a backhand pass to Chabot, who snapped a shot past Swayman for his second of the season. “Drake (Batherson) did 99 percent of the job,” said Tarasenko. “He made a very good screen and the goalie can’t see and left the corner open.” The goal resulted in a scrum behind the net, and Chabot got punched by Charlie McAvoy, triggering a larger scrum and roughing penalties assessed to McAvoy, Wotherspoon, Tim Stuzle, with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to Batherson. Bruins coach Jim Montgomery wasn’t overly impressed with the discrepancy in power plays. “I don’t think we dodged a bullet; I think we took about eight bullets,” said Montgomery. “They had six power plays we had one. That is one-sided.” The Bruins were largely outplayed in the first, but still held a one-goal lead after the opening 20 minutes. Ottawa failed to capitalize on its two power-play chances, while Boston scored three seconds into its power play at 18:36 of the first. Pastrnak beat Korpisalo from just inside the blue line on the Bruins' third shot of the period. Senators forward Shane Pinto made his home debut after serving a 41-game suspension for gambling. Pinto had returned to action and picked up a point in a win at Philadelphia on Sunday.
  6. Game # 48 Flames 2 CBJ 5 Texier gets 1st short-handed goal of season for Blue Jackets in 5-2 win over slumping Flames Updated: Jan 26, 2024, 02:14 am CALGARY, Alberta -- — Alexandre Texier scored Columbus' first short-handed goal this season and the Blue Jackets beat the skidding Calgary Flames 5-2 on Thursday night. Yegor Chinakhov, Damon Severson, Dmitri Voronkov and Adam Fantilli, into an empty net, also scored for Columbus (15-23-9). The Blue Jackets improved to 4-2-2 in their last eight road games. “Not every night’s going to be pretty, not every play is going to be perfect, and we get that,” Severson said. “I felt we were engaged for the most part and we didn’t sit back.” MacKenzie Weegar and Connor Zary each had a goal for the Flames (21-22-5), who have lost four straight — all at home. “It’s unacceptable. Four straight losses at home when you’re trying to make the playoffs,” defenseman Chris Tanev said. Daniil Tarasov made 28 saves in the win. Jacob Markstrom stopped 27 shots for Calgary. “Guys played really good in the second. This gave us the chance to win in the third period,” Tarasov said. With the score tied 2-all in the second, Calgary got the game’s first power play when Severson was whistled for high-sticking at 5:21. But the Flames’ 30th-ranked power play failed to take advantage, and the Blue Jackets scored instead. They were the only NHL team without a short-handed goal this season. “Our penalty kill is more dangerous than our power play right now, and that’s not a good thing,” Calgary coach Ryan Huska said. Texier burst down right wing with the puck on a 2-on-1, and his initial shot hit the post. But as Markstrom looked over his right shoulder for the rebound, the puck came back out over his left shoulder and right to Texier, who buried his seventh goal of the season. “It doesn’t happen really often, those bounces, but when you get the chance you have to put it in,” Texier said. Jonathan Huberdeau was given a boarding major and game misconduct at 11:28 of the third when he drilled Jack Roslovic headfirst into the boards, bloodying his face. Columbus took advantage of the extended 5-on-4 with Voronkov’s goal at 13:43 that made it 4-2. “We’re missing a little bit of energy I find at times in games,” Flames captain Mikael Backlund said. “We’ve got to play with a lot of energy and pace and when we don’t, that’s when teams take advantage of us.” KYLINGTON RETURNS After missing more than a season and a half on a mental health leave, Flames defenseman Oliver Kylington played his first NHL game since May 26, 2022. The crowd gave him a standing ovation when he was introduced in the starting lineup. “It’s touching, for sure. It really is,” the 26-year-old Swede said. “This was nothing I could ever expect. When you see people writing to you, people cheering for you, applauding you, it really touches you in a way I wasn’t expecting. So it means a lot.” Weegar has goals in three straight games for the first time in his career. ... Calgary lost LW A.J. Greer halfway through the second period when he injured his left leg. Greer collapsed to the ice after hitting the boards, clutching at his leg. He had to be helped off the ice.
  7. It's amazing to me (now in this day and age) how quickly one rep can be destroyed in the COPO....all it takes is a rumor, usually started by an ass^ole.... Case in point, the whole Corey Perry/Bedard's mom story, which i did not buy for a second. As far as this situation, i'll just reserve to comment til we know exactly what happened, and wait to the matter is closed.

  9. MacKinnon continues scoring spree with 4 goals as Avalanche win ESPN News Services Jan 25, 2024, 01:22 AM ET DENVER -- Nathan MacKinnon scored three of his four goals consecutively in the second period for a natural hat trick and added an assist to help the Colorado Avalanche beat the Washington Capitals 6-2 on Wednesday night. MacKinnon, the NHL scoring leader with 82 points, had his second four-goal game of the season and eighth career hat trick. He ran his home points streak to 24 to break a tie with Joe Sakic for the franchise record. "He's always been the most dedicated guy off the ice since I've been here but what he's doing this year, he's really consistent with it," Colorado coach Jared Bednar said. "I'm talking going from great to elite habits off the ice." Mikko Rantanen had a goal and four assists for his first five-point game, Cale Makar set the franchise record for goals by a defenseman with his 76th and Alexandar Georgiev made 23 saves. MacKinnon selflessly ceded a chance for a hat trick Saturday in Philadelphia, passing to Logan O'Connor so he could get his first. MacKinnon didn't pass up the opportunity Wednesday, scoring three times in a 6:37 span of the second period. The first two were one-timers on power plays. On the third, he deked Charlie Lindgren and beat him with a backhander at 9:16 for just the second natural hat trick since the franchise moved to Colorado in 1995. Sakic had the other one, March 13, 2003, at Columbus. "It's always nice to score four. I'd be lying if I said anything different," MacKinnon said. "Right now they're going in for me." MacKinnon's other four-goal performance was Dec. 21 against Ottawa when he also had five points. He has at least one point in all 11 games in January, with one remaining before the team has 10 days off. "He couldn't surprise me," Bednar said. "That's just where he's at. You look at what he does on a nightly basis, what am I going to say?" Lindgren stopped 27 shots and Dylan Strome had two goals for Washington, the Capitals have lost three straight, falling 5-3 at Minnesota on Tuesday night. The Capitals outshot the Avalanche 8-2 to open the game but didn't take advantage of their first two power plays. Instead, Makar scored his first regular-season short-handed goal late in the first.
  10. Game # 47 Bos 2 Canes 3 Martinook scores on late breakaway to lead Hurricanes past Bruins, 3-2 ByAP Updated: Jan 24, 2024, 11:07 pm BOSTON -- — With no one between him and the goalie, Jordan Martinook picked out a spot and took his shot. It was off target. “It went in. That's all that matters,” the Hurricanes forward said after scoring on a breakaway with 2:27 left to snap a third-period tie and give Carolina a 3-2 victory over the Bruins on Wednesday night, snapping Boston's six-game winning streak. “Just tried to shoot quick. Didn’t really hit the spot I wanted to hit,” Martinook added. “Sometimes you catch a goalie off guard, and I feel like that’s kind of what it did. So, didn’t really hit where I wanted to hit. But it doesn’t matter. It went in.” Brad Marchand scored twice in the third period to rally Boston from a two-goal deficit and tie the game with 12 minutes to play. The goals gave him 395 for his career, tying Ray Bourque on the Bruins' all-time list. It was Boston's first loss in almost two weeks and its first in regulation since Jan. 4. “We’ve played in this building a lot over the last three or four years — in big moments, too,” said Martinook, who lost to Boston in the 2019 Eastern Conference finals and the first round the next year but eliminated the Bruins in the first round in 2022. “We know that this crowd can juice them up a little bit," he said. "You just focus on your next shift and try and get the momentum back on your side. And I felt like we did that pretty good.” Spencer Martin, waived by Columbus and claimed by the Hurricanes last week, stopped 25 shots in his first start for Carolina. He had not played since Jan. 2, when he took a 4-1 loss for the Blue Jackets against the Bruins. "Great for him," Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour said. “He comes into a tough spot — we throw him to the wolves. And he held his own and he gave us a chance to win. Made a couple saves — crucial ones early, and then a couple of late, obviously, too.” Martin Nečas and Teuvo Teräväinen also scored for the Hurricanes, giving them a 2-0 advantage after two periods. After the Bruins tied it, Martinook took a feed from Nečas and wristed the puck through Linus Ullmark’s legs. “They definitely had the momentum,” Nečas said. “It was good to kind of slow the game down a little bit because they were buzzing, and just take it back.” Boston cut the margin to one when Trent Frederic fought for the puck behind the net and then slid it across the slot to Marchand. The same line delivered eight minutes into the third when Marchand poked the rebound of Charlie Coyle’s shot through Martin’s legs to tie it. Marchand has 395 goals — all with Boston. Bourque, the Hall of Fame defenseman and five-time Norris Trophy winner, scored 395 of his 410 career goals with the Bruins. Ullmark made 30 saves for Boston in his second start since missing 10 days with a lower-body injury.
  11. Game # 47 Brandon Saad scores twice as Blues beat Flames 4-3 ByAP Updated: Jan 24, 2024, 01:43 am CALGARY, Alberta -- — Brandon Saad’s second goal of the night with 48 seconds left in the third period was the winner as the St. Louis Blues rallied to beat the Calgary Flames 4-3 on Tuesday night. “I felt good,” said Saad, who led the visitors with five shots. “You want to see some more of those go in but any time you see them go in they feel good. Happy to contribute tonight.” Brayden Schenn and Jordan Kyrou also scored for St. Louis and Jordan Binnington made 32 saves. MacKenzie Weegar, Noah Hanifin and Yegor Sharangovich provided the offense for Calgary, which has lost three in a row. Jacob Markstrom, returning from a three-game absence due to a lower-body injury, made 22 saves. Down 3-1 late in the second, St. Louis started its comeback with a short-handed goal. When Weegar mishandled the puck at the St. Louis blue line, Schenn pounced on it and raced away on a breakaway, burying his 11th goal of the season past Markstrom. The Blues’ 11th short-handed goal moves them into a tie for the league lead with the Dallas Stars. Kyrou tied it 3-3 at 6:56 of the third when he skated uncontested into the slot off the side boards and fired his 13th goal just inside the goalpost. On the winning goal, Saad got the puck inside his own blue line, carried it through the neutral zone and sent a 50-foot wrist shot that rattled in off the goalpost on Markstrom’s glove side. “I was just trying to move him side to side and shoot through a screen and it found a way in for me,” said Saad, who has 13 goals on the season. Markstrom said he still should have had it, despite the puck taking a bad bounce. “That’s tough. Obviously with the clock and the time left and tie game, it’s a crazy skip off the ice and post and in. I don’t know. Obviously, I need to stop that one,” said Markstrom. “I thought it was fine, I thought it was just gonna hit the pad.” Having already eclipsed his career high of eight, Weegar’s 11 goals is tied for third for defensemen in the league behind Rasmus Dahlin (13) and Quinn Hughes (12). While the Blues are 18-2-0 when scoring first, their .900 winning percentage leading the NHL, it’s the opposite when they don’t score first. But Tuesday’s win improves their record when trailing first to 5-18-2. The Blues are three points back of Nashville for the second wild-card berth with two games in hand. “These are big wins, four-point games, teams you need to beat in order to climb the standings,” said Schenn. “Gutsy comeback win. It was nice that it was regulation as well.”

  15. Game # 46 Bos 4 Jets 1 Bruins down Jets 4-1 for 5th straight victory in matchup of NHL division leaders ByAP Updated: Jan 22, 2024, 10:47 pm BOSTON -- — Charlie Coyle scored the tiebreaking goal late in the opening period and Boston’s tight defense carried the Bruins to their fifth straight victory, 4-1 over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday night in a matchup of top NHL teams. Jake DeBrusk and Jakub Lauko also scored as Boston improved to 10-1-3 in its last 14 games. Jeremy Swayman made 20 saves for the Bruins, who lead the Eastern Conference with 67 points. DeBrusk had a short-handed goal with 5:25 left and Brad Marchand added an empty-netter. Winnipeg had given up no more than two goals in 14 consecutive games, and three or fewer in 34 straight — one short of the modern NHL record set by the 2015 Minnesota Wild. “We knew the challenge that was ahead of us. They’ve been playing some good hockey and they’re where they are in the standings for a reason. They don’t give up a whole lot,” Coyle said. “You remember the last time we played these guys. They played really well, and we played really bad. It leaves a bad taste in your mouth and we want to show them what we’re capable of and what we can do. We definitely saw more of that tonight." Vladislav Namestnikov scored for the Jets, who lead the Central Division with 64 points. Connor Hellebuyck stopped 17 shots. Last season, Boston set NHL records for wins (65) and points (135) before being eliminated in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs by Florida. “That’s probably the worst game we’ve had in a long time with our breakouts,” Winnipeg coach Rick Bowness said. “We were slow moving it and the passes were soft. That allows Boston to play their game.” Coyle, positioned in the slot, tipped Linus Lindholm’s shot from the point and it sailed past Hellebuyck, pushing Boston ahead 2-1 with 1:34 left in the first period. The Bruins had jumped ahead when Trent Frederic collected a rebound and sent it over to Lauko, who scored from the top of the crease 2:20 into the game. Namestnikov tipped Dylan DeMelo’s shot from the point and it dipped past Swayman’s glove, tying it at 4:16. “I think it’s all about us,” Jets forward Kyle Connor said. “We can play against any team, and I think we’ve shown that. We were just a little timid.” After scoring nine goals in Saturday night’s win over Montreal and 14 total in their previous two games, the Bruins were faced with a tough test against the league’s best defensive team. They improved to 6-0-1 in their last seven meetings with the Jets, getting some payback for a 5-1 loss at Winnipeg on Dec. 22. “They embarrassed us the last time we were in Winnipeg,” Boston coach Jim Montgomery said. “We have a lot of proud guys that represent the Bruins for a long time in a real good way,” he added. “I think the opportunity to get back at them was something that was motivating.” The Jets came in giving up just 2.25 goals per game. Boston responded with some stingy defense of its own, holding the Jets to single digits in shots on goal until the closing minutes of the second period. Winnipeg also entered the night with the league’s top winning percentage (72.7%) and Boston was second (72.2).

  17. Roy grateful to be back in NHL as Islanders coach Says he’s evolved since resigning from Avalanche in 2016 © Mathieu Belanger/Getty Images ByNicholas J. Cotsonika @cotsonika NHL.com Columnist January 20, 2024 Patrick Roy wanted another shot to coach in the NHL after abruptly resigning from the Colorado Avalanche on Aug. 11, 2016. He got it when the New York Islanders hired him to replace Lane Lambert on Saturday. Finally. “It means a lot,” Roy said. “When I left Colorado, I thought the phone would ring faster. But it did not, and I understood that the way I left Colorado was probably not the best way to do things.” Roy said he learned from his experience with the Avalanche and has evolved over the past 7 1/2 years. That will be key to his impact on the Islanders, starting with his debut against the Dallas Stars at home Sunday (7:30 p.m. ET; MSGSN, BSSW). General manager Lou Lamoriello made it clear he thinks Roy can take this team to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Islanders have lost six of their past seven games (1-5-1) but entered Saturday two points behind the Detroit Red Wings for the second wild card from the Eastern Conference. “In my opinion, that is exactly what this is for,” Lamoriello said. “And now we have to put it on the players, because I know what Patrick will bring to them. Now it’s what the players will bring to us.” Roy was one of the greatest goalies in NHL history, arguably the greatest. We all know his Hockey Hall of Fame resume. He was an instant success as coach of the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, leading them to the Memorial Cup in 2005-06. Then, after eight seasons in junior, he was an instant success again in Colorado in 2013-14. The Avalanche went 52-22-8, won the Central Division and took the Minnesota Wild to seven games in the Western Conference First Round. He won the Jack Adams Award, voted NHL coach of the year. But some felt his record was deceiving, because the Avalanche had poor possession and great goaltending. Then they went 39-31-12 and missed the playoffs in 2014-15, and then they went 39-39-4 and missed the playoffs again in 2015-16. The downward trend in points: 112 to 90 to 82. When Roy resigned, it was a little more than a month before training camp for the 2016-17 season, putting the Avalanche in a difficult position. Joe Sakic was general manager, but Roy was vice president of hockey operations. He released a statement saying his vision needed to be “perfectly aligned with that of the organization” and he wanted “a say in the decisions that impact the team’s performance.” He said those conditions weren’t met. Perhaps that had something to do with why the phone didn’t ring. After two seasons out of coaching, Roy returned to the Remparts for five seasons. He led them to the Memorial Cup again last season. Two important questions: One, is Roy a different coach now than he was when he left Colorado? “Day and night,” Roy said. “… I learned to respect even more today the work of the coaching -- coming to the rink early, working hard to help the players with ideas -- and I really want to establish a bit what we did in Colorado, which was a partnership with the players. We want the players to buy into what we’ll do as a coaching staff and help them to achieve their goals.” Patrick Roy hired as the new Islanders coach Two, will Roy have a role in management? “Zero interest in management,” Roy said. “And that’s the first thing I told Lou. Even at the end of my days in Colorado, Joe was our GM, and he was making most of the decisions. Yeah, he would come downstairs and ask my opinion on things, but I had zero interest in management [in New York]. “And I would say this to you: When I took the job in Colorado, I think I was a bit of a dreamer and thinking that I could do both. I think have plenty on my plate. Just worry about my relationship with the players and the media, and try to use the media as a bridge between us and our fans. “Our fan base is extremely important, and I want our fans to come to our games and be excited for all this. I want our fans to walk in the street wearing that jersey and be so proud of that team, and that’s my objective.” If you’re an Islanders fan, how can you not be excited about that? “I’m proud of taking the time to go back to junior, working with those guys [and] making sure that I stay on top of that different culture, because the player of today is different than what it was in my times,” said the 58-year-old, who retired as a player in 2003. “It changed, and you have to adjust to the younger guys. I’m very happy that I did this, and I’m very happy that I received this call. “I wasn’t unhappy on the golf course. I won’t lie. But I would say this to you: It was a very welcome call.”
