  1. I may lean to differ.... Kuzmenk had a solid season last year, but is somehow in tocchet's doghouse, Hunter B is having a monster year in the OHL is the flames defense prospect pool is suspect. Jurmo is 6'4 and has wheels, plues another first round pick. And if i am not mistaken, isn't lindholm a UFA at the end of the year, might not even stay in nuckland.

  3. Vancouver trades for Calgary All-Star center Elias Lindholm Ryan S. Clark, NHL reporterJan 31, 2024, 10:31 PM ET The Calgary Flames had one lone All-Star Game representative at the start of Wednesday in Elias Lindholm. By the end of the day, they had none after trading him to the Vancouver Canucks. Lindholm's future with the Flames had been in question as he was slated to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. It's why Lindholm, who has nine goals and 32 points in 49 games this season, was considered one of the most sought-after players ahead of the NHL trade deadline on March 8. That's also the reason the Canucks parted ways with forward Andrei Kuzmenko, a pair of prospect defensemen in Hunter Brzustewicz and Joni Jurmo, and a 2024 first-round pick and a conditional 2024 fourth-round pick to bring Lindholm to Vancouver. Getting Lindholm accomplishes several things for the Canucks. He gives them another top-six center who is capable of creating either for himself or for his teammates, in addition to what they already have with J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson. He's also a legitimate scoring threat. The 29-year-old Lindholm has reached the 20-goal mark four times in his career while surpassing the 40-assist plateau on three separate occasions. In addition, Lindholm provides the Canucks with a reliable two-way center who can be used in several defensive situations -- such as their penalty kill, which entered Wednesday ranked 15th. Lindholm, who led all Flames forwards in short-handed ice time, was anchoring a penalty kill that was fourth in the NHL with an 84.4% success rate. On the day the Canucks announced they gave general manager Patrik Allvin a contract extension, the franchise watched him execute the latest move in what has become a transformation over the past 12 months. It was this time a year ago when the Canucks were left to answer questions about their future. They had just moved on from Bruce Boudreau, who after winning 32 of his first 57 games in charge, was fired after an 18-25-3 start, which led to them falling out of playoff contention by December. Allvin hired former Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet, who won 20 of his 36 games in charge last season. He then traded captain Bo Horvat to the New York Islanders and received a first-round pick as part of that deal, only to send that pick to the Detroit Red Wings in a move that landed the Canucks defenseman Filip Hronek. From there, Allvin used the following offseason and part of the regular season to revamp a defense led by captain Quinn Hughes that has become one of the stronger units in the NHL. That included a deal earlier this season between the Flames and the Canucks that brought Nikita Zadorov to Vancouver. Elias Lindholm has racked up nine goals and 32 points in 49 games this season. The result of that work saw the Canucks catapult to a 12-3-1 start and remain in the discussion as one of the NHL's best teams while also sending five players plus Tocchet to the NHL All-Star Game in Toronto. Now that figure rises to six All-Stars thanks to Lindholm while also raising questions about how far the Canucks can go this season and if the year ends with them reaching the Stanley Cup Final after missing the playoffs for four straight seasons. Already faced with the prospect of finding a new contract for Pettersson, the Canucks and Allvin will do the same with Lindholm. Pettersson is a pending restricted free agent, which means the Canucks will have team control until he becomes a free agent in 2026. Lindholm, however, could walk after this season. Moving on from Lindholm is expected to be the first in what could be a series of moves for a Flames team that's stuck between trying to challenge for a playoff spot and facing the reality the franchise could be in store for major changes. Lindholm was one of several pending UFAs on the Flames' roster, which led to questions about what direction the franchise would take. Saddled with an inability to consistently find offense coupled with a crowded landscape, the Flames came into Wednesday five points out of the final Western Conference wild-card spot. His departure also raises questions about if the Flames are about to trigger a potential exodus ahead of the trade deadline. They have seven players who are pending UFAs, with the bulk of them coming on defense as five of the seven blueliners under contract are in the final year of their deal. It's a group that includes Noah Hanifin and Christopher Tanev, among others. The haul the Flames received from the Canucks could be the sort of bounty to help them now and in the future. It's possible that leaving the Canucks will help Kuzmenko find the form that made him one of the Canucks' best players last season. The unrestricted free agent signed with Vancouver after starring in the KHL with SKA St. Petersburg. Kuzmenko broke through to score 39 goals and rack up 74 points before the Canucks signed him to a two-year contract worth $5.5 million annually only to see the forward have just eight goals and 21 points in 43 games. He was also a healthy scratch on several occasions. The Flames now have two first-round picks in this year's draft while having eight picks in total. They also have two more defensemen who could help reshape their roster in the years to come. Brzustewicz was a third-round pick in 2023 and is on pace to score 98 points with the Kitchener Rangers in the OHL. He has six goals and 69 points through 47 games after recording six goals and 57 points last season. Jurmo, who was a third-round pick in 2020, is playing in the Liiga, the top division in Finland, where he has one goal and four points in 35 games between Ilves and KooKoo.
  4. Preds Prospect Report... by Eric D January 8, 2024 The second half of the 2023-24 campaign has begun, which means it’s crunch time for several Preds prospects playing for entry-level contracts and more. Here’s a look at who in the Nashville pipeline stood out in December. Graham Sward Ahead of the WHL trade deadline on Thursday, Graham Sward continues his hot season for the Wenatchee Wild. Since the start of December, Sward has scored 18 points in 13 games, including a three-assist night on Saturday when he became the first WHL defender to hit 50 points on the year. Sward is 13th among all WHL skaters in scoring with nine goals and 52 points in 38 games. The Wild appear to be sellers this year, shipping NHL prospects Conor Geekie and Matt Savoie off to Swift Current and Moose Jaw, respectively. As of today, I don’t have any indication Sward will be moved as well, but a Memorial Cup contender could step up sometime this week. A long playoff run could benefit the 2022 fifth-round pick, who needs a deal from Nashville this summer, or else he becomes a free agent. Luke Reid Luke Reid is making progress in his senior year at the University of New Hampshire. The 2020 sixth-round draft pick has notched a career-high ten points in just 17 games this year; he scored 21 points in his first three seasons combined.Luke Reid (#16, blue) records a primary as sist for the New Hampshire Wildcats. Much of the defender’s value comes on the power play, and right now, he’s playing for an entry-level deal from Nashville next summer (something I’m not sure he’ll get). Juha Jatkola Over the weekend, Preds goalie prospect Juha Jatkola did the improbable, scoring a goal to ice KalPa’s 5-1 win. On top of that, Jatkola picked up an assist in the victory, bringing his points total this season to five (one goal, four assists)—an astonishing number for a goalie who’s played 19 games. Juha Jatkola (#32, yellow) scores a goalie goal for KalPa. Jatkola, a 2023 draft pick, got off to a horrendous start this season, losing his starting job amidst several sub-0.900 outings. But he’s rebounded lately, stopping 62 of 64 shots in his last three Liiga starts and slowly rebuilding his season save percentage. One trend that you hope we’ll change: Jatkola is facing just more than 21 shots per night. Jesse Kiiskinen In a surprise move, Jesse Kiiskinen was the last cut from Team Finland’s World Junior Championship (WJC) camp last month; at the U18 WJC last season, Kiiskinen notched three goals and five points in five games. Jesse Kiiskinen #23, blue) scores his second goal of the season. But since returning to his Liiga club, the Pelicans, Kiiskinen has scored twice in four games, bringing his season total to three goals and seven points in 31 games; that puts him tied for eighth among U20 skaters league-wide. Five of those points were primary ones scored at even strength, and Kiiskinen’s average ice time has increased to the 12 to 13-minute range. Despite a setback or two, I think he’s putting together a solid post-draft campaign. Kalan Lind Kalan Lind has had a rough go of things lately. The 2023 second-round pick missed a ton of time with injury in his draft year, and that continues for the Red Deer Rebels’ winger this season. He’s missed 19 games with injury and illness but has scored five goals and 18 points in the 19 games he has played, keeping him on course for a career-best season. Unlike Graham Sward’s Wenatchee Wild, the Rebels look to be staying quiet at the WHL trade deadline, but they remain firmly in the Eastern Conference playoff hunt. Sutter Muzzatti In what continues to be a dismal season for 6-12-1 RPI, Sutter Muzzatti has been a bit of a bright spot for the Engineers. He’s scored five goals and 12 points in 19 games, including six primary points at even strength. However, the 6’5″ fifth-round pick has cooled off lately with just three points in his last ten games. Sutter Muzzatti (#19, red) scores for the RPI Engineers. Cole O’Hara Cole O’Hara has picked up his play in the past month, recording five points in six games since Thanksgiving. The 2022 fourth-round pick has scored two goals and seven points in 19 games this year, playing middle-six minutes with some power-play time. O’Hara’s line has been decently effective for UMass as he’s sporting a 3.35 percent relative goals-for rate at even strength. But O’Hara is looking to increase his scoring pace in the second half of the year and move beyond his 5.88 percent shooting rate. Austin Roest Halfway through December, Austin Roest took a big (dirty) hit that knocked him out of the Everett Silvertips’ lineup for a couple of weeks. But the 2023 sixth-round pick is back on the ice and has scored four points in his last five games. The Silvertips’ captain is first on his team in goals with 20 and fourth in scoring with 37 points in 35 games. Isak Walther Out of the lineup since early November, Isak Walther suited up for just his seventh game of the season on Saturday in a loss for the Vermont Catamounts. Walther scored his 3rd goal and fourth point of the year, continuing his impressive production rate of 1.88 goals per 60 minutes.

  7. Game # 49 Bos 6 Flyers 2 Pastrnak leads the Bruins to a 6-2 rout of the Flyers ByAP Updated: Jan 27, 2024, 04:29 pm PHILADELPHIA -- — David Pastrnak had two goals and an assist, James van Riemsdyk had a goal and an assist and the Boston Bruins routed the Philadelphia Flyers 6-2 on Saturday in the final game for both teams before the NHL All-Star break. Charlie McAvoy, Danton Heinen and Charlie Coyle also scored for Boston, which has won seven of eight. The Atlantic Division-leading Bruins entered play tied with Vancouver for the most points in the NHL. They now have 71. Linus Ullmark made 35 saves, and Pavel Zacha added two assists for Boston. “Amazing,” Pastrnak said of the finish to the first half of the season. “We were talking about it a lot to make sure we finished strong before the break.” Tyson Foerster scored both goals for Philadelphia, which lost its fifth game in a row. Owen Tippett (lower body) missed his fourth straight game one day after signing an 8-year, $49.6 million extension. The Flyers also were without goalie Carter Hart, who took an indefinite leave of absence from the team on Tuesday. Sam Ersson was pulled Saturday after allowing four goals on 14 shots in the first period. Cal Petersen replaced him to start the second period and made 12 saves. “You have some good weeks, and you have some struggles,” Flyers coach John Tortorella said. "We’re having some struggles now. We’ve just got to try to put our head down and see if we can solve some problems and get better.” Pastrnak, who will play in his fourth All-Star Game, continued his dominance of the Flyers. He has 11 goals and six assists during a seven-game point streak against Philadelphia and 42 points in 29 career games versus the Flyers. Pastrnak loves coming to Philly, where the NHL draft was held in 2014 when the Bruins selected him No. 25 overall. “This is where my dream started, so always fun for me to come back to this building," he said. "Obviously, it’s mentally positive coming in here.” The game was scoreless until Pastrnak converted on a wrist shot with 5:51 left in the first, starting a flurry of four goals in 4:14. McAvoy netted his seventh 1:37 later from the side of the crease after a cross-ice setup from Zacha. Heinen made it 3-0 when he scored on a deflection of Brandon Carlo’s shot from long range. Officials confirmed the goal after video review showed that Heinen did not play the puck with a high stick. Pastrnak recorded his second of the contest and team-leading 33rd goal with 1:37 left from in front to make it 4-0. “They score the first one after we have three or four really good chances, and I just think it affected us,” Tortorella said. The Bruins continued where they left off in the first period after the intermission when van Riemsdyk scored 1:15 into the second on an assist from Pastrnak’s pass from behind the net to make it a five-goal lead. The assist upped Pastrank’s team-best points total to 72. “He’s a game-breaker, right?" Bruins coach Jim Montgomery said. "And he gives us an advantage that, in close games, we can win them.” Foerster got Philadelphia on the board with his first of the game with 4:37 left in the period when his wrist shot from close range went through the pads of Ullmark. He notched his second with 8:32 to play. Joining Pastrnak at the All-Star Game in Toronto will be Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman, who is making his first appearance after going 16-3-7 with a 2.30 goals-against average and .924 save percentage in 27 games. Travis Konecny, who leads Philadelphia in goals (22) and points (42), will represent the Flyers in his second appearance.
  8. Game # 49 Flames 1 Hawks 0 Lindholm and Markstrom lead Flames over punchless Blackhawks 1-0 to halt skid Updated: Jan 28, 2024, 02:29 am CALGARY, Alberta -- — Elias Lindholm scored a power-play goal late in the second period and Jacob Markstrom made 32 saves as the Calgary Flames snapped a four-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday night. The last-place Blackhawks have been shut out in two consecutive games, three of their last four and four of the past six. Minus injured rookie star Connor Bedard, they've lost 10 straight on the road and are winless in their last 20 away from home (0-19-1). The franchise record is 22 games (0-20-2) set in 1950-51. “Obviously it’s really frustrating,” said Chicago defenseman Kevin Korchinski. “We’ve got to bear down and maybe not put it into words. Let our actions do the talking.” Petr Mrazek had 30 stops for Chicago. “We’ve had some games where we’ve had maybe more chances and more shots than the other team but maybe not the quality, but tonight I think we had the quality as well,” said Chicago coach Luke Richardson. “I don’t know if I’ve ever seen six breakaways in a game and zero on the score clock.” It was the 20th career shutout and second this season for Markstrom, who improved to 14-13-2 as Calgary finished a 2-4-0 homestand. “Obviously you want to put on a better performance for your goalie, but he was dialed in tonight and he played an outstanding game,” said Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson. “Sometimes you need your goalie to steal a game and today was a perfect example of that.” Calgary broke through when its 30th-ranked power play cashed in at 15:55 of the second. Lindholm set up Yegor Sharangovich in front, whose one-timer was blocked by defenseman Jarred Tinordi. But the puck caromed right to Lindholm at the side of an open net and he fired it in for his ninth goal of the season with Mrazek trapped out of position. That ended a 15-game goal drought for Lindholm, who was selected by the NHL as Calgary’s representative for the upcoming All-Star Game. It was just his second goal in the last 25 games. “It’s been a while, I’ve had a lot of chances, just haven’t been able to put them in. So it’s always nice to score again and also to help the team win,” Lindholm said. Two years removed from scoring 42 goals, Lindholm — who is a pending unrestricted free agent — has just nine goals through 49 games. Chicago had a wide edge in the quality of chances, with Markstrom turning aside five breakaways in the first 40 minutes. “It’s obviously really frustrating when you do get looks and the puck’s not going in,” said Chicago forward Taylor Raddysh. “At the end of the day you have to bear down on a couple of them. As a whole group we need to find that extra little jump or step to be able to bang one home and get one by the goalie.” The Flames announced left wing A.J. Greer will be out eight weeks with a broken foot sustained in Thursday night’s loss to Columbus.
  9. NHL suspends Canadiens' Gallagher 5 games for illegal check Associated Press Jan 26, 2024, 05:54 PM ET NEW YORK -- Montreal Canadiens forward Brendan Gallagher has been suspended five games for an illegal check to the head of New York Islanders defenseman Adam Pelech. The NHL announced the suspension Friday after a disciplinary phone hearing with Gallagher, who was given a match penalty and ejected for hitting Pelech in the head with his right elbow midway through the third period of the teams' game Thursday night. Pelech did not return. In videos produced in English and French announcing the suspension, the league's department of player safety said Gallagher delivered direct and forceful contact to Pelech's head when he could have avoided doing so. Gallagher, 34, and now in his 12th season, had been fined once before in his career and not suspended before. Not considered a repeat offender under the collective bargaining agreement, he'll forfeit $169,271 in salary and miss games at Pittsburgh and Washington and against Dallas, St. Louis and Anaheim sandwiched around the All-Star break. Gallagher is eligible to return Feb. 15 at the New York Rangers.
  10. Gallagher to have phone hearing for actions in Canadiens game Forward facing discipline for illegal check to head against Islanders defenseman Pelech ByNHL.com @NHLdotcom 10:07 AM Brendan Gallagher will have a phone hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Friday. The Montreal Canadiens forward is facing discipline for an illegal check to the head against New York Islanders defenseman Adam Pelech on Thursday. The incident occurred at 11:52 of the third period of the Canadiens' 4-3 win at Bell Centre in Montreal. Gallagher’s elbow made contact with Pelech's head moments after the latter made a pass in the neutral zone. Gallagher was assessed a five-minute match penalty. Pelech left the game and did not return. The penalty was upheld upon an official's video review. The following grounds are being considered for supplemental discipline: illegal check to the head. However, the Department of Player Safety retains the right to make adjustments to the infraction upon review.

  13. Game # 48 Bos 3 Sens 2 OT Brad Marchand scores in overtime as Bruins beat Senators 3-2 ByAP Updated: Jan 25, 2024, 11:46 pm OTTAWA, Ontario -- — Brad Marchand scored at 1:48 of overtime and the Boston Bruins beat the Ottawa Senators 3-2 on Thursday night. The goal was Marchand's 396th — the fifth in four games — and moved him past Ray Bourque and into fifth all-time with the Bruins. “It’s special,” the 35-year-old Marchand said. “I try not to think too much about it, but it’s special. I never thought my career would come this far and some of the things that have gone on would have happened. “I’ve been extremely fortunate and very lucky to be part of a group that’s had a lot of success and a lot of phenomenal guys to learn from.” It was also Marchand's 19th career overtime goal, tying him with Jaromir Jagr for the third in NHL history, behind Alex Ovechkin (26) and Sidney Crosby (20). David Pastrnak and Trent Frederic also scored for the Atlantic Division- and Eastern Conference-leading Bruins. Jeremy Swayman stopped 35 shots. “I think the biggest thing is finishing off a game that looked like an uphill battle sometimes,” Swayman said. “And it’s really special to get a back-to-back and finish it in overtime, so huge congrats to (Marchand) passing some pretty great names. So really, really good feel-good win for us.” Thomas Chabot and Vladimir Tarasenko scored for the Senators. Joonas Korpisalo made 20 saves. Ottawa was trailing 2-1 when Josh Norris thought he had tied the game at 13:18 of the third. But, officials determined a hand pass was involved. The Senators did come back to tie the game at 2-all with a power-play goal at 16:42, when Tarasenko sent a shot past Swayman. Leading 1-0 after one period, Boston extended its advantage at 8:19 of the second when Frederic beat Korpisalo high to the blocker side. The Senators cut the lead to one with a late power-play goal. Drake Batherson made a backhand pass to Chabot, who snapped a shot past Swayman for his second of the season. “Drake (Batherson) did 99 percent of the job,” said Tarasenko. “He made a very good screen and the goalie can’t see and left the corner open.” The goal resulted in a scrum behind the net, and Chabot got punched by Charlie McAvoy, triggering a larger scrum and roughing penalties assessed to McAvoy, Wotherspoon, Tim Stuzle, with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to Batherson. Bruins coach Jim Montgomery wasn’t overly impressed with the discrepancy in power plays. “I don’t think we dodged a bullet; I think we took about eight bullets,” said Montgomery. “They had six power plays we had one. That is one-sided.” The Bruins were largely outplayed in the first, but still held a one-goal lead after the opening 20 minutes. Ottawa failed to capitalize on its two power-play chances, while Boston scored three seconds into its power play at 18:36 of the first. Pastrnak beat Korpisalo from just inside the blue line on the Bruins' third shot of the period. Senators forward Shane Pinto made his home debut after serving a 41-game suspension for gambling. Pinto had returned to action and picked up a point in a win at Philadelphia on Sunday.
  14. Game # 48 Flames 2 CBJ 5 Texier gets 1st short-handed goal of season for Blue Jackets in 5-2 win over slumping Flames Updated: Jan 26, 2024, 02:14 am CALGARY, Alberta -- — Alexandre Texier scored Columbus' first short-handed goal this season and the Blue Jackets beat the skidding Calgary Flames 5-2 on Thursday night. Yegor Chinakhov, Damon Severson, Dmitri Voronkov and Adam Fantilli, into an empty net, also scored for Columbus (15-23-9). The Blue Jackets improved to 4-2-2 in their last eight road games. “Not every night’s going to be pretty, not every play is going to be perfect, and we get that,” Severson said. “I felt we were engaged for the most part and we didn’t sit back.” MacKenzie Weegar and Connor Zary each had a goal for the Flames (21-22-5), who have lost four straight — all at home. “It’s unacceptable. Four straight losses at home when you’re trying to make the playoffs,” defenseman Chris Tanev said. Daniil Tarasov made 28 saves in the win. Jacob Markstrom stopped 27 shots for Calgary. “Guys played really good in the second. This gave us the chance to win in the third period,” Tarasov said. With the score tied 2-all in the second, Calgary got the game’s first power play when Severson was whistled for high-sticking at 5:21. But the Flames’ 30th-ranked power play failed to take advantage, and the Blue Jackets scored instead. They were the only NHL team without a short-handed goal this season. “Our penalty kill is more dangerous than our power play right now, and that’s not a good thing,” Calgary coach Ryan Huska said. Texier burst down right wing with the puck on a 2-on-1, and his initial shot hit the post. But as Markstrom looked over his right shoulder for the rebound, the puck came back out over his left shoulder and right to Texier, who buried his seventh goal of the season. “It doesn’t happen really often, those bounces, but when you get the chance you have to put it in,” Texier said. Jonathan Huberdeau was given a boarding major and game misconduct at 11:28 of the third when he drilled Jack Roslovic headfirst into the boards, bloodying his face. Columbus took advantage of the extended 5-on-4 with Voronkov’s goal at 13:43 that made it 4-2. “We’re missing a little bit of energy I find at times in games,” Flames captain Mikael Backlund said. “We’ve got to play with a lot of energy and pace and when we don’t, that’s when teams take advantage of us.” KYLINGTON RETURNS After missing more than a season and a half on a mental health leave, Flames defenseman Oliver Kylington played his first NHL game since May 26, 2022. The crowd gave him a standing ovation when he was introduced in the starting lineup. “It’s touching, for sure. It really is,” the 26-year-old Swede said. “This was nothing I could ever expect. When you see people writing to you, people cheering for you, applauding you, it really touches you in a way I wasn’t expecting. So it means a lot.” Weegar has goals in three straight games for the first time in his career. ... Calgary lost LW A.J. Greer halfway through the second period when he injured his left leg. Greer collapsed to the ice after hitting the boards, clutching at his leg. He had to be helped off the ice.

As far as this situation, i'll just reserve to comment til we know exactly what happened, and wait to the matter is closed.

  17. MacKinnon continues scoring spree with 4 goals as Avalanche win ESPN News Services Jan 25, 2024, 01:22 AM ET DENVER -- Nathan MacKinnon scored three of his four goals consecutively in the second period for a natural hat trick and added an assist to help the Colorado Avalanche beat the Washington Capitals 6-2 on Wednesday night. MacKinnon, the NHL scoring leader with 82 points, had his second four-goal game of the season and eighth career hat trick. He ran his home points streak to 24 to break a tie with Joe Sakic for the franchise record. "He's always been the most dedicated guy off the ice since I've been here but what he's doing this year, he's really consistent with it," Colorado coach Jared Bednar said. "I'm talking going from great to elite habits off the ice." Mikko Rantanen had a goal and four assists for his first five-point game, Cale Makar set the franchise record for goals by a defenseman with his 76th and Alexandar Georgiev made 23 saves. MacKinnon selflessly ceded a chance for a hat trick Saturday in Philadelphia, passing to Logan O'Connor so he could get his first. MacKinnon didn't pass up the opportunity Wednesday, scoring three times in a 6:37 span of the second period. The first two were one-timers on power plays. On the third, he deked Charlie Lindgren and beat him with a backhander at 9:16 for just the second natural hat trick since the franchise moved to Colorado in 1995. Sakic had the other one, March 13, 2003, at Columbus. "It's always nice to score four. I'd be lying if I said anything different," MacKinnon said. "Right now they're going in for me." MacKinnon's other four-goal performance was Dec. 21 against Ottawa when he also had five points. He has at least one point in all 11 games in January, with one remaining before the team has 10 days off. "He couldn't surprise me," Bednar said. "That's just where he's at. You look at what he does on a nightly basis, what am I going to say?" Lindgren stopped 27 shots and Dylan Strome had two goals for Washington, the Capitals have lost three straight, falling 5-3 at Minnesota on Tuesday night. The Capitals outshot the Avalanche 8-2 to open the game but didn't take advantage of their first two power plays. Instead, Makar scored his first regular-season short-handed goal late in the first.
  18. Game # 47 Bos 2 Canes 3 Martinook scores on late breakaway to lead Hurricanes past Bruins, 3-2 ByAP Updated: Jan 24, 2024, 11:07 pm BOSTON -- — With no one between him and the goalie, Jordan Martinook picked out a spot and took his shot. It was off target. “It went in. That's all that matters,” the Hurricanes forward said after scoring on a breakaway with 2:27 left to snap a third-period tie and give Carolina a 3-2 victory over the Bruins on Wednesday night, snapping Boston's six-game winning streak. “Just tried to shoot quick. Didn’t really hit the spot I wanted to hit,” Martinook added. “Sometimes you catch a goalie off guard, and I feel like that’s kind of what it did. So, didn’t really hit where I wanted to hit. But it doesn’t matter. It went in.” Brad Marchand scored twice in the third period to rally Boston from a two-goal deficit and tie the game with 12 minutes to play. The goals gave him 395 for his career, tying Ray Bourque on the Bruins' all-time list. It was Boston's first loss in almost two weeks and its first in regulation since Jan. 4. “We’ve played in this building a lot over the last three or four years — in big moments, too,” said Martinook, who lost to Boston in the 2019 Eastern Conference finals and the first round the next year but eliminated the Bruins in the first round in 2022. “We know that this crowd can juice them up a little bit," he said. "You just focus on your next shift and try and get the momentum back on your side. And I felt like we did that pretty good.” Spencer Martin, waived by Columbus and claimed by the Hurricanes last week, stopped 25 shots in his first start for Carolina. He had not played since Jan. 2, when he took a 4-1 loss for the Blue Jackets against the Bruins. "Great for him," Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour said. “He comes into a tough spot — we throw him to the wolves. And he held his own and he gave us a chance to win. Made a couple saves — crucial ones early, and then a couple of late, obviously, too.” Martin Nečas and Teuvo Teräväinen also scored for the Hurricanes, giving them a 2-0 advantage after two periods. After the Bruins tied it, Martinook took a feed from Nečas and wristed the puck through Linus Ullmark’s legs. “They definitely had the momentum,” Nečas said. “It was good to kind of slow the game down a little bit because they were buzzing, and just take it back.” Boston cut the margin to one when Trent Frederic fought for the puck behind the net and then slid it across the slot to Marchand. The same line delivered eight minutes into the third when Marchand poked the rebound of Charlie Coyle’s shot through Martin’s legs to tie it. Marchand has 395 goals — all with Boston. Bourque, the Hall of Fame defenseman and five-time Norris Trophy winner, scored 395 of his 410 career goals with the Bruins. Ullmark made 30 saves for Boston in his second start since missing 10 days with a lower-body injury.
