Arizona? The league has bent over backwards to keep that sorry franchise where they are, to the extent that they're now playing in a tiny college arena where the fans of opposing teams outnumber people cheering for the Coyotes. The team is almost literally just a dumping grounds for LTIR contracts.

Precisely.  Arizona is a sorry franchise, just like you say.  So too is Buffalo, Columbus, and Anaheim.

You think Bettman and company wanted the next face of hockey to play THERE?!?  Or ANY of those places???

    No chance.

If anything, the Oilers winning the lottery in 2015 is evidence that the league doesn't rig the draft. There's no way they were hoping that Connor McDavid would land in the laps of a historically inept management team that plays its games in the most out-of-the-way market they could find. If they had their choice, McDavid would be a Ranger or Blackhawk right now.

NHL has a Canadian and Original 6 bias.  Always catering to those clubs.  Of course Buffalo and Arizona were robbed of McDavid and ofc Anaheim and Columbus were robbed of Bedard.

They didn't get "handouts" they were terrible.

The thing about "lotteries" is that they are "random" and don't guarantee results.

If the lotteries were truly random they would be drawn LIVE.  Otherwise its extremely suspicious the way certain teams win.  Specifically, EDM to win the lottery 2 times in 6 years (both 1OA wins) and retain the 1OA spot the two times they were 1OA favorites and for NJ to outright win 1OA twice and 2OA once in 6 years.

The statistical likelihood of the above scenario is poor.  Probably because it wasnt a statistical anomaly. Bettman and the NHL pick their winners

I honestly don't see anything wrong with Chicago stripping down their team after winning 3 cups, and doing a full rebuild. I'll bet they end up contending before the eternal borderline playoff Flyers ever do.

I also am not sure I'd call Bedard, or Kane "generational", I think that term gets thrown around way too loosely. Kane, for example has put up the 4th most points since he joined the league, behind Crosby/Ovechkin/Malkin and just ahead of "generational" Kopitar/Stamkos/Pavelski/Giroux.  But they're certainly franchise players.

Kane was good enough where he can be considered a debatable generational talent.

I have no problem w Chicago or what they've done.  I dont like how the NHL caters to original 6 and canadian teams...dropping a generational prospect into their lap while several franchises have been terrible for nearly a decade or longer.

Typical Bettman sh**.  And if that's how he operates why shouldnt the Flyguys be considered for a handout ?

Edmonton wasn't a bubble playoff team for 10 years.

Edmonton legit sucked for 10 years. They made the Final first year after the lockout and then didn't make the playoffs for a decade.

It's how you get multiple high picks. It's also a cautionary tale because it doesn't always work.

Likewise the Devils were 7/8 in the division for four years.

They weren't "lucky" they were terrible.

Columbus, Anaheim, Arizona, and  have been terrible for years also but somehow Chicago got to skip the line - again - and get another generational player literally 1 season after previous generational talent in Patty Kane left.

Chicago tanked - intentionally - by selling and trading off every worthwhile asset and were rewarded...the exact thing the lottery system is supposed to prevent.

Since 1995 the Flyers have only "won" the lottery once and have twice (maybe more) moved down.  The infamous 2007 draft was obviously most noteworthy and nothing - at all - has helped the club in the meantime as their #2OA pick isnt even in the league (thanks Hextall).

All I'm saying is if EDM (Hall, RNH, Yakupov, and McJesus - 4 times in 6 or 7 years) and NJ (Hischier and Hughes - 2 times in 4 years) can get all that lottery luck for 1OA...surely we can get another stab......

We gave up 6 goals but Frost was a plus 3, and he scored an incredible goal, he started the whole play too. I wouldn’t trade him, he is our only skilled center and he’s not a defensive liability. I wanna drop to around the 12th pick and see if we can trade up. I don’t think we will drop enough to be in the top 10.

Hoping we drop and...some lottery luck.

When's the last time Flyers had lottery luck?  JVR in place of Kane...and I dont include Patrick who played something like less than 200 career games. . .

If EDM can get 1OA three times on six years and NJ can get it twice in a few years...we are due !

As far as the story has never been proven…Richard’s got pinched at the border with a crap load of Oxys and was out of hockey at 28, so it looks like they were accurate with Richard’s. Carter had a long productive career, so maybe his partying wasn’t so bad . So maybe they won the Richard’s trade but lost the Carter trade.

Dont forget there were rumours Carter slept w Hartnells wife...it made sense the Flyers moved on, but trading Tippett would be a bad look in my opinion.  Team is much more fragile right now...A #5 OA pick just publicly refused to play/sign for the Flyers...a defenseman just blocked a trade to not come to Philly...lots of high profile FA dont even look in Philly direction.

Last year, the Oilers demonstrated that you can do it, but it mostly only worked because they had a guy who may be the best player ever, and a #2 centre in the prime of a Hall of Fame career. It's extremely draining on the centres, tires them out, definitely leads to defensive breakdowns, and by the time the playoffs get past the first round, they're out of gas.

I think it's alright in an emergency, but don't consider it something which should be used very often

All good points.  Even Gretzky, or McJesus, have their limits.  Cant run a guy 25+ min/night for dozens of games consecutively and expect their A+ game in round 2/3 or even the Stanley Cup...need evidence?  That's why repeat winners of Stanley Cup are rare and why the threepeat is almost unheard of.  Guys are just on fumes cause the playoffs are both 6+ longer of hockey as well as 6+ weeks shorter of breaks...

For right now though, while team continues to find what it is, suppose its not a huge problem?

Still, I like the bones here.  Framework really looking promising...And I was NOT optimistic when Danny and Keith took over and said they wouldn't rebuild.  Guess that's why they do what they do and I dont do it...

I thought the Canucks were sniffing around Walker earlier this year. If they're still interested, I wonder if instead of a first, if the Canucks would offer Vasili Podkolzin instead? They would be a fantastic player to add. I think he'd be the perfect fit on a line with Frost and Tippett. Tippett and Podkolzin could be the physical, shooting wingers while Frost is the setup man.

I also think another big move is on the horizon as well. They've got momentum after the Drysdale/Gauthier swap (I marvel at how Briere stole Drysdale and that 2nd round pick is a top three pick in the 2nd), so does Briere do something shocking like moving Konecny or does he play it safe and move Atkinson? What if he does both? I think it's something that bears watching.

The team is on a downward spiral now, especially after the news with Carter Hart. It's time to do some more removal. Move guys who deserve a shot at a championship and play more young guys.

Flyguys are playing closer to expectations.  Their start just wasnt sustainable...they dont have the horses...yet.

Not sure if anyone wants Atkinson.  Flyers do need some veteran leaders and Cam is decent for what he is.

Despite enjoying Konecny...cant help but wonder about the haul he could fetch

The Flyers' game coverage is ultimately bought and paid for by the same people who own the team.

The team doesn't want to talk about it.

It ALMOST made it onto sports radio, but THEY didn't want to talk about it and it wasn't something people were going to call in about.

The team lost one of their foundational pieces in potential career-ending disgrace and got nothing for it.

It's not like a trade that disrupted a tight locker room but brought something back.

It's almost more akin to a death.

There's no timeline for getting over this.

Def makes you wonder.  Hart was in the rumour mill all offseason and people speculated he couldnt be moved because of outstanding legal issues.

Danny B did the next best thing and signed Errsson to an extension (most of us considered an overpayment) that makes a lot more sense today.  Then Danny B made additional excellent decisions by drafting potential blue chip goaltenders in Carson Bjarnason and Egor Zavragin.

Its strange to say but even with a potential Hart exodus...Flyers goaltending future looks...bright?

So, I'm pretty much in line with others around here. The salary is more than fair, but I think the term runs about three years too long. He provides a combination of high level offense and abysmal defense, but it's much harder to find guys to put the puck in the net than anything else. Generally speaking, I'm usually a bit leery of when guys find a big bump in their scoring, but he's not being zoomed by a high shooting percentage, so it seems repeatable to me. If he loses his wheels before the contract ends, it won't be pretty out there.

    image.png

@jammer2 I'm not sure if I agree with the article comparing Owen Tippett and Nugent-Hopkins. I understand that they're not comparing stylistically speaking, but rather in terms of production. Offense has gone up a fair bit since RNH was Tippett's age. That year, he was 73rd in points-per-game and +10 on a team that gave up more than they scored. Tippett is 117th in points-per-game and-3 on a team with a positive goal differential.

How much better would Giroux and Voracek era been if they had a guy like Tippet?  The truth is teams need a Jeff Carter...a shoot first player.  Everyone cant be a set-up passer.

And dont make me dig up threads where people pulled their hair out at overpassing between G and Scoracek.  Tippet is a terrific addition and getting adequate pay for a Top 6 role and potential PP specialists

  13. Love the signing.  Dude is 24 now and is signed through his entire prime (with room to grow).  With the cap projections this will be a steal soon and can even be considered fair value today.

I'm tired of all the pass-first players.  We need someone to shoot the puck because the object is to SCORE.  A 20+ goal guy w/ 50pts and great underlying metrics...

    Great work Danny B!

let me also say this, if the opinions of the people on this forum mattered in the slightest to franchises like the Flyers, Chuck Fletcher’s dumb ass would’ve be gone at the end of his first season chip Kelly would’ve never been hired and both of the offensive and defensive coordinators, for the Eagles would’ve been fired after game five of this NFL season

and even more so if the opinions of us on this for mattered, Ristolainen would’ve never been brought here and would’ve been out of here after about the first warm-up of pre-season

Everyone has an opinion.  Hell, law was birthed from opinions that use logic and science to support ideas.  When enough people share the same opinion it evolves into a movement...ya know, kinda like the #metoo movement...which is loosely related to this entire thread.

Sorry if thats too abstract for you

  17. 2 hours ago, Molly Bell said:

I don’t know where you are getting the 8% percent figure, but even so, that’s only 8% of the 10% of sexual assaults that ARE reported. 90% ARE NOT REPORTED. So again, false accusations are NOT the problem. Does it happen? Sure. Does it happen often? No. Does it happen even a little bit? Hardly.

The National Registry of Exonerations reports that since 1989, only 52 men have been exonerated due to the false rape allegations.

This number is compared to 790 overturned murder cases. This means that men falsely accused of rape are often able to dissolve these matters before spending substantial time in jail.

Please watch The Anatomy of a Scandal I posted the link above. You will quickly understand that no one is “making up” stories. I am sure their defence will be about consent. They will not nor cannot deny they had sex. It will be interesting. Ben Johnson, who played for the Windsor Spitfires and drafted to NJ, was arrested and tried for sexual assault in 2013. The victim was inebriated. The judge found him guilty because she could not give consent. He was sentenced to 3 years in prison. Oh, and of course, NJ terminated his contract.

What is the point of replying to me if you dont even read the post?  Triggered?

    Anyhow, if you just read a paragraph or two of the links provided you'd find your answer;

"Other studies have figures in the same range. The FBI has put the number of "unfounded" rapes - those determined to be false after investigation - at 8%."

The case you mentioned, Ben Johnson, is not the same issue.  Can someone give consent when they're intoxicated is not the same as outright rape.  Theyre different issues.

  18. 12 hours ago, radoran said:

Are there instances that can be cited of a famous woman "making it up" (regardless of the details...)?

    Perhaps.

What we do know beyond a shadow of a doubt and with no qualifications is that men rape women.

    A lot.

    How much?

A recent report said 26,000 women were impregnated by rape in an 18 month period

    In Texas.

The primary statistical counter argument was that it was only 16,000.

So, AT BEST, 16,000 women were impregnated

    By rape

    In one state

    In the last 18 months

Tell me again how women "make it up"?

I've cited examples where it happened and research suggests at least 8% of the time sexual allegations are made up.  Most of the time its real.

You dont know - even if your mind seems already made up - if this accusation against Hart and company is legitimate or not.

  19. 16 hours ago, CoachX said:

The feelings thoughts and accusations made by unknown people on a hockey forum has no, ZERO, impact on those involved. No damage is occurring by what any of us think. The flyers have taken no action against Hart. So this is just an overly emotional response by you, because you want your star goalie back on the ice

to your second statement, where you say you’ll wait before making accusations… I find it interesting how hard you are arguing on Harts behalf. It sounds an awful lot like your are accusing the victim in this case

This is completely false.  Statements shared on here and other forums like Twitter, Insta, and all other public communities help form what's called a "public opinion/narrative".  None of us are public figures so its a very small contribution to the public narrative but we all contribute.

The Eagles fired Chip Kelley largely because the fans wanted him out.  Kelley got rid of fan favorite players in Nick Foles, Lesean McCoy, DeSean Jackson, and Jeremy Maclin.  Fans were outraged and the negativity boiled throughout the entire 2015 season resulting in one of the most predictable firings in recent history...

Not satisfied?  Try this one which hits closer to home.

Chuck Fletcher has been criticized by fans almost since the day he arrived.  Fans largely suspended their judgement although nearly everyone expressed concern w the signing.  Fletcher produced mediocre results (2018 - 82pts, 2019 - 89pts, 2020 - 58pts, 2021 - 61 pts, 2022 - 75 pts), but more importantly public perception was near all-time lows:

    https://theathletic.com/3374320/2022/06/21/philadelphia-flyers-fletcher-ownership-survey/

    https://www.sportskeeda.com/ice-hockey/news-the-devil-gone-philadelphia-flyers-fans-celebrate-firing-gm-chuck-fletcher

The point is - media shapes narrative and that narrative plays an enormous role in the socialization of society.  The culmination is that our itty bitty voices, when combined, do produce change.  If everyone is advocating for the same thing that same thing usually happens.

So, yes, your contributions (and mine and everyone else here) do have a small effect on those accused and charged.  And my belief is not just thought up in my head, its from learning about the topic from people who've been falsely accused in the past (including professional athletes):

    https://thecrimewire.com/multifarious/Football-Player-Falsely-Imprisoned-For-Rape-Exonerated-Gets-Pro-Contract

    https://www.newyorker.com/news/annals-of-activism/meeting-the-other-side-conversations-with-men-accused-of-sexual-assault

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duke_lacrosse_case

Here are some important points from the Duke case specifically:

    "

Not a month goes by when I am not reminded of the damage those accusations have had on my reputation and the public's perception of my character. Sometimes only time can heal wounds.

    — anonymous Duke lacrosse player, 30 for 30, Fantastic Lies (2016)

In January 2007, lacrosse team member Kyle Dowd filed a lawsuit against Duke University and against a visiting associate professor and member of the Group of 88, Kim Curtis, claiming he and another teammate were given failing grades on their final paper as a form of retaliation after the scandal broke.[148][149] The case was settled with the terms undisclosed except that Dowd's grade was altered to a P (for "Pass").[150]

Professor Houston Baker, who continued to accuse Dowd and the others of being "hooligans" and "rapists", called Dowd's mother "the mother of a farm animal" after she e-mailed him. Duke Provost Peter Lange responded to Baker, criticizing Baker for prejudging the team based on race and gender, citing this as a classic tactic of racism.[151]

Duke's athletic director at the time, Joe Alleva, who forced lacrosse coach Mike Pressler's resignation, faced criticism for his handling of this case."

So, yes, @CoachX your contributions do matter.  The Duke lacrosse players were mistreated and discriminated against for charges that were ultimately dropped.  What's really moving is the DISCRIMINATION CONTINUED AFTER THE CHARGES WERE DROPPED.  My personal belief is that communities and forums like this one play an important role in shaping public narrative.  Most of the time it doesnt change anything, but with the severity of these charges...please consider the implications.

THAT MEANS...consider if the woman alleging she was gangraped was your daughter - I'd want to murder those young men.  THAT ALSO MEANS...consider if one of those young men was your son - what if he really is wrongly accused?  Will you give one f*** if he's constantly harassed in the community?  What if he turns to alcoholism?  Cant get a job?  What if he takes his own life?  Will it matter then?  Would you care then?

You dont know what happened and neither do I.  I am not condoning illegal behavior for anyone.  If you did the crime you better be doing the damn time.

What I wont do is start punishing someone for, as far as we know, a "story".  That story may evolve to have evidence including DNA and testimony/statements and text messages and even video...At that point it no longer becomes a story and instead becomes a criminal act.

Let's let the authorities and court do their work and find out what happened BEFORE we start holding people accountable...because we don't know.

  20. 1 hour ago, Molly Bell said:

if you followed the details of this case, Hockey Canada told the players NOT to speak to the investigators. In fact, when HC was notified that the victim went to the police the next day, someone with HC notified the players and they left London. These players (all of them whether they were involved or not), did not cooperate with the investigation back then. They weren’t “cleared” as you suggest. They weren’t charged (at the time). Trust me, the police would not reopen the case and charge 5 players for a crime that happened 5 years ago if they do not have very convincing evidence.
