    PREVIEW 8:30 AM EST

In this year's installment of their annual Black Friday matinee at the Wells Fargo Center, the Flyers (12-6-3) will take on the Montreal Canadiens (10-9-3). The game starts at 3 PM EST and will be broadcast locally on CSN Philly.

The game is second of four meetings between the teams this season. On Oct. 26, the Flyers visited Montreal to take on a struggling Habs team. Philly got off to a strong start in the first period, grabbing a 1-0 lead on a Jaromir Jagr tally. But the Flyers got burned late in the first period, and the Habs took over the game in the second and third periods. Ilya Bryzgalov was tagged with the loss in the 5-1 defeat.

Over their past three games, the Flyers have taken on the bottom three teams in the Eastern Conference. They were beaten in regulation by the Winnipeg Jets (road) and Carolina Hurricanes (home) before taking advantage of subpar goaltending by the New York Islanders' Rick DiPietro to come back from a 3-1 deficit and prevail in overtime, 4-3, on Long Island on Wednesday.

Danny Briere spurred the comeback with a game-tying goal in the third period and the game-winner in the third. Andrej Meszaros and Scott Hartnell provided the other tallies for the Flyers.

The Habs enter this game with a 5-4-1 record over their last 10 games. On Wednesday. Montreal downed Carolina via shootout, 4-3. Overall, the Habs have been in a win-one, lose-one pattern spanning their last 7 games.

Peter Laviolette did not name a starting goalie for today. Sergei Bobrovsky was outstanding in relief of Bryzgalov after the first period of Wednesday's game, but has struggled in his last three starts. Bryzgalov had been a hot streak until mediocre outings against both Carolina and the Islanders. Carey Price will be in goal for Montreal.

The Canadiens have been one of the NHL's best penalty killing teams so far this season. Their 89.9 percent success rate on the PK ranks third in the league. After slumping for much of November on the power play, the Flyers have had some success in recent games, and brought their season percentage up to 18.6 percent (12th in the NHL).

On the flip side, while Philly's PK had been on a roll, the team has struggled in that department of late. They've yielded at least one opposition PPG in each of the last four games, and have dropped to 83.3 percent (13th in the NHL) on the season. The Habs' power play has been nothing special most of the season and comes into the game at an unimpressive 14.1 percent (23rd in the NHL).

On the injury front, Jaromir Jagr is out for a minimum of two games after re-aggravating a groin injury in the second period of Wednesday's game. Chris Pronger (virus) is listed as questionable for today's game but is not expected to play.

For Montreal, Scott Gomez (lower-body injury) is questionable, as are Jaroslav Spacek (upper body) and Andreas Engqvist (lower body). Andrei Kostitsyn (lower body) has been on IR, but resumed practicing earlier this week.

    From CSN

Flyers vs. Canadiens, 3 p.m. on CSN

    Records

Flyers: 12-6-3 (Second in Atlantic Division, Fourth in Eastern Conference)

Canadiens: 10-9-3 (Fourth in Northeast Division, 10th in Eastern Conference)

    Previous games

The Flyers defeated the Islanders 4-3 in overtime Wednesday night. Danny Briere scored twice late, while relief goalie Sergei Bobrovsky made a series of crucial saves in overtime to lead the orange and black to a victory.

The Canadiens rallied for a 4-3 shootout win over the Hurricanes on Wednesday. Michael Cammalleri scored his fifth of the season and Travis Moen tied the score at 3-3 in the third.

    Who's hot?

Wednesday was the first time in six games that rookie Matt Read did not score a goal. He entered the contest with a five-game goal streak, which was the longest stretch by a Flyers' rookie since Mikael Renberg had a goal in six straight in 1994.

Carey Price is 3-1-0 with a 0.99 GAA and two shutouts since Nov. 16. Max Pacioretty, Montreal's leader with nine goals, scored twice against the Flyers in October.

    Storylines

Jaromir Jagr left Wednesday's game against the Islanders after re-injuring his groin in the second period. Jagr said he will sit the next two games.

    Injuries

Flyers: Chris Pronger (illness), Erik Gustafsson (wrist), Jaromir Jagr (lower-body), Blair Betts (lower-body), Brayden Schenn (foot).

Canadiens: Hall Gill (flu), Andrei Kostitsyn (lower-body), Jaroslav Spacek (lower-body), Chris Campoli (groin), Andreas Engqvist (lower-body).

  2. Bundy? Chris Therien was drafted and developed by Philly and we got 11 years out of him. That's the best defenceman the Flyers have drafted and developed in over 20 years and 67 defencemen drafted? You'd think if you picked names out of a hat 67 times you'd come up with something better than Chris Thereien. No wonder we haven't won a cup.

Depending on what is done with Bob, you can the inability to develop everything other than forwards....

  3. That's the difference between hartnels dry spells and dannys. Hartnel goes in long dry spells followed by a short unsustainable burst. And he is a liability in his own end.

When briere goes in his slumps he doesn't usually hurt them in their own end. At least not since his first year with the flyers. And when he gets going he can sustain it, especially in big games. As VanFlyer said, so long as he shows up for the big games, he can drift though these beginning of the season non-division games. Not to say his slumps aren't frustrating though......

  4. I'm back and forth. After waiting for a true #1 for so long, which I think it's fair to say Bryz is when he is on his game, will the fans and the media turn on him if he doesn't start playing like one by Jan 1? Feb1? Nobody wanted Tim Thomas just a year or two before he literally carried the Bruins to the cup. He's off his game but are the Flyers realistically winning the cup this year? Let him grow with the team this year. Work out some kinks, get younger on D some how and let the kids develop.

Now if he is still playing like this late this season and even next fall? Run him out of town with flaming pitchforks.

  5. If I were the GM I'd be trying to move the guy now.

The GM jumped at what he thought was an opportunity when he heard Carter was available. He was a stud center that the Blue Jackets needed or so he thought. He pulled the trigger and then the cards started falling. He tried to bandaid them by flying to jersey and it seemed to stick for a little. Jeff put on a **** eating grin and said he would be happy. Kind of like when you are a kid and you don't want to do something but your parents make you.....

Then he bangs the three hot girls in Columbus and gets bored. Brakes his foot (again), watches his 'team' win three games in 15 and it starts to settle in that he has to spend 11 years of his life there. He miserable, which affects his team and even the fans. Jeff Carter is how he plays....All about Jeff Carter. I wouldn't say he is selfish but maybe more like 'he wants what he wants'.

If I were the GM, I would realize that it's going to be hell to try to keep this guy happy for the next 11 years. Admit your mistake and start looking for trading candidates. Of course Jeff would have to approve the trade because what other GM wants a head case on their team. If Jeff says he will be happy with the move, pull the trigger assuming the compensation is appropriate.

In the end Jeff gets what he wants but gets labeled as spoiled once and for all. The GM gets a chance to fix a big mistake AND he gets the next 11 years to thank himself everyday that he decided to 'quit the jeff carter' before it ruined him and his career.

  6. I remember hearing a few people saying something to the effect that he's wasn't going to be that big of an upgrade over what they've had over the past few years. Except for maybe 2 games this year, he has been exactly that. After so many years of the fans and media calling for a true number 1 goalie, the management went out and got the best one that was available. The management, fans and maybe even the players expect the world of the guy - especially at 9yrs 51 million - from the start of the season. They are getting average....again. He's off his game but the team defense is horrible. 20th in GA/G

Maybe it's a slump. Maybe he isn't comfortable in a new system. Maybe he can't stop staring at Giroux's porn stash.....

    SV% .902 = 43rd in the league (Bob - .877 - 64th)

    GAA 2.75 =38th in the league ((Bob - 3.66 - 66th)

When one of those two get their game back even remotely, the Flyers (when healthy) will be right in the hunt till the end.

Maybe even Danny finds his stride.

  7. From Meltzer:

In addition, Andreas Nodl (knee) is a go for tonight. He'll replace Jody Shelley in the starting lineup.

    Hartnell - Giroux - Zolnierczyk/others

    JVR - Briere - Simmonds

    Read - Talbot - Voracek

    Carle - Pronger

    Timonen - Coburn

    Lilja - Meszaros

    PREVIEW 8:45 AM

For the third time in less than a month, the Flyers (11-5-3) will take on the Carolina Hurricanes (7-11-3). Tonight's game will be the final meeting at the Wells Fargo Center. The teams will conclude the season series in Raleigh on Jan. 10. Tonight's game starts at 7 PM EST and will be broadcast locally on CSN Philly.

The Flyers have handled the Canes with relative ease in the first two games. Claude Giroux has been a one-man wrecking crew, with 3 goals and 7 points in the two games. Philly is coming off an ugly loss in Winnipeg on Saturday, while the Canes beat Toronto (3-2) last night but have only won twice in their last nine games and are playing for the third time in four nights.

With the two teams have played each other so often of late, there are few surprises that either side can throw at the other at even strength. The Flyers will try to pressure the Hurricanes down low and create space while Carolina will try to be opportunistic off Philadelphia turnovers.

Carolina finally tallied a power play goal (Jussi Jokinen) last night but remains the worst team in the NHL (11.6 percent) on the man advantage. The Canes have killed penalties at a pedestrian 79.8 percent rate. Philly's PK had been on a roll until the Winnipeg game (now 85.1 percent overall), while the power play had been struggling until potting a couple in that game to raise the team's season percentage to 18.1 percent.

Ilya Bryzgalov has been hot of late in goal, and should be back between the pipes tonight. Carolina's Cam Ward was pulled in the last game against Philly and started last night, so the nod tonight may go to ex-Flyer Brian Boucher. Boosh was solid for two periods against his old club in the first meeting before letting down in the third period. He played extremely well in relief of Ward last Monday.

Jaromir Jagr (groin pull) skated on his own yesterday after missing Saturday's game. He is not definitely out for tonight, but it seems more prudent to give him an extra game to heal. Brayden Schenn (broken foot) is skating with the club but not ready to return. Erik Gustafsson (wrist surgery) is out, while Andreas Nodl (left knee sprain) is day-to-day. For Carolina, ex-Flyer Joni Pitkanen (foot) has missed the last week (four games) but is considered day-to-day.
