yave1964
It looked as if Logan Thompson would be a hands down Rookie of the Year early in the season, he was leading the Knights in an early season run, as they were playing through a slew of injuries he was the teams MVP early. Then he came back to Earth, then he got hurt, the injury was originally day to day then week to week then who knows if his season is done. That allowed Beniers in Seattle and Skinner in Edmonton to pass him, one of the two will absolutely be the Calder winner this season as the rookie of the year. the question is which one. BENIERS The case for is he is leading all rookies in scoring, as well as goals, is second in plus/minus, very well might win the Lady Bing as well with only a single penalty against all year, and is the heart of a Kraken team that is going to make the playoffs in its second season. The case against is he has not looked comfortable on the power play this year and yes, he is leading the league in rookie scoring but with only 54 points. SKINNER The case for is he leads all rookies with 26 wins, leads all rookie goalies in starts by a lot, and after Campbell crapped the bed Skinner has steadied the ship and is helping Edmonton into the playoffs as they are peaking at the right time. The case against is yes, he is having a fine year but his 2.84 goals against is only 21st among all regular goalies, so the case could be that he is an average goalie being propped up by a brilliant team. So who wins?? Edited April 5, 2023 by yave1964
flyercanuck
Norris is top Dman. Calder is rookie. Kind of a lame race this year.

Math
My reflex is always referring to Jeff Skinner when reading Skinner lol. Not that exciting. It's maybe a bit harsh but I'd go with Beniers by default. Not that Skinner doesn't deserved it but he was a bit inconsistant, his numbers are not that terrific and he's not the reason why Edmonton will qualify for the postseason. JR Ewing
I think it will go to Beniers. -Both have been above average, but Beniers also comes in with more cache as a high profile draft pick who is succeeding at a young age. -The voters simply don't have a habit of giving Calder votes to goaltenders. We have to go back to 2009 for the last time it was given to a netminder, and in the last 30 years voters have been twice as likely to select a centre over a goalie.
