Dynamo 47
Footage of Derek Mathers going with Kyle Flemington of the London Knightshttp://www.hockeyfig...m/fights/107871The kid is big and tough as nails. I just hope he is working on other aspects of his game because unless he is more well rounded he will never make it in Bettman's NHL.Love watching this kid fight as he is a total bull. His style is not that rope a dope garbage but more old school like Tony Twist or Joey Kocur. He stand stands there and throws. For example Flemington is one of the tougher guys in the "O" as I believe is about 6'7. Mathers totally controls the fight and lands some heavy shots (although not all clean). Here is another impressive win against a tough guy, Ty Bilcke.http://www.hockeyfights.com/fights/106952 Edited December 16, 2011 by Dynamo
TedZep
Mathers is the guy they selected instead of Tomas Hyka, the free agent guy they weren't allowed to sign that raised a lot of eyebrows in the pre-season.I hope that decision works out for them. jammer2
@Dynamo 47 Yeah, Bilcke is a pretty tough guy (although it is his first year in the O...where Mathers is a seasoned vet)...but Mathers filled him in, pretty impressive. I think Mathers hockey skills are underrated. He has an outside chance at #7 defenseman spot on the Flyers in a few years. He looked like a very respectable passer when I saw him. Nothing guaranteed (as with most pugilistic 7th rounders), but I do have high hopes for the kid....certainly somebody to keep an eye on. flyercanuck
Watched Mathers play against our local junior team this afternoon. He didn't look bad out there at all. I'm not saying he's great or anything, but he kept up with the play, and has a very hard wrist shot. They were calling him the toughest guy in the OHL. He was jawing at one of our players but the guy wouldn't even look at him. Barrie won 4-3 in OT. The kid can throw. One thing that is jarring is that he's taking on guys that are relatively close to his size so it's interesting how 6'7" didn't look all that imposing. oh, and on the second fight... nothing more annoying than watching guys who wear visors drop the gloves off a faceoff and not take off the buckets. If you're in a scrum along the boards in the heat of the moment, fine, I get that you don't have the where with all to think, okay, we're scrappin, let's take off the visors. Both of those fights however were right off the face off, both guys wear visors... don't either of them wonder what the point of punching plastic is? I used to like how the goon code was if you're gonna be rough and have the occasional fight, no visor. Now with the way sticks and pucks come up, ya gotta put the tough guy code to the side and at least take care of your face in that regard but if you are going to negotiate a fight before play even starts, you have time to remember to take the pansy face shield off.
