Cory Conacher waived

Last season little Cory Conacher started the season on the Lighting having earned his roster spot with hustle and grit and a nice scoring touch, he was on fire, at one point he was considered a favorite to win the Calder. He was dealt to the Senators along with a fourth round pick in exchange for Ben Bishop at the deadline last season.

Ben Bishop is now on the short list of candidates for the Vezina trophy and Conacher has just been waived by the Senators. All in one year.

On the year Conacher has only managed 4 goals and 20 points and is a plus 8, not horrible numbers but not what would have been hoped for from someone who came over for the potential Vezina winner. The problem is he does not score enough to play a top six role, he is too small to kill penalties, not physical enough o play the power play, as a fourth liner he is not an ideal grinder. Essentially he is an AHL star trapped in an NHL body and Murray did a poor job of identifying what he was and to his credit Steve Yzerman did a good job of taking this undrafted free agent and buying low, selling high.

I think part of it was in the way he was used and who he was paired with when he went to Ott. With the right partners, he is an ice stretching pest with a nose for goal but it seemed as if Ott never really put him in a position to succeed. He is a smallish version of Harry Zolniercyck(sp?).

Agreed. He has been on the 4th line most of his time in OTT. Hard to score with those minutes, playing with those players. When he has got the rare chance to play with better players or on the PP he has put up some points. I don't understand this move except as a way to make room for Hemsky I guess.
