ruxpin
@JR Ewing What's the reasoning here? That seems like a lot for cement head. But is there some feeling that they could keep him next to McJesus and he'll become like a John LeClair alongside Lindros?

But is there some feeling that they could keep him next to McJesus and he'll become like a John LeClair alongside Lindros? I'm really not sure what the thinking is. Kassian DOES have some use: he can skate, he has some defensive awareness, and he has worked well with McDavid (not EVERYbody they put there clicks). But really, that's where they need to put a much more talented player, and Kassian is only playing on the 1st line because Peter Chiarelli cultivated all the crops and then salted the field when he was done. The team was stripped of pretty much any winger with talent. If Kassian is still on the 1st line for another season, then the Oilers haven't done nearly enough to give McDavid some help, and if Kassian's playing down the lineup, then $3.5M is FAR too much for a depth player. It's really tough to see this working out well at all. Kailer Yamamoto has been a difference maker since joining the Oilers, but he, Draisaitl and RNH should not be broken up. In other words, at least one of Tyler Benson and/or Raphael Lavoie needs to work out.
yave1964
IDK devils advocate, roughly same per year as Tanev and that type, Sam Bennett, Dzingel, Eller, Compher, Sissons. All play invaluable roles on their respective teams in an unheralded under the radar way, when one is out of the lineup THAT is when you notice them, not the other way around. Guys who can play up and down the lineup, kill penalties, play second PP duties, never complain, great teammates, I mean the term is a bit high but not extraordinarily out of line, Kassian seems to have shaken his bust status kind of like Danny Cleary did when he arrived in Detroit. Solid player, respected, will do anything asked of him. To me it would be worse to see him walk and then look around and realize that they have a need and nobody to fill it. sign him, write him down for 15 goals or a few more every year and know he will give his heart and soul on every shift.

Apparently case Lucic wasn't enough to teach them a lesson. Although, IMO Kassian is a better and more versatile player than Lucic ever was. And the Flames still pay $6 M a year to him, ouch. I think in the grand scheme of things this wasn't too bad after all, huh? Edited January 25, 2021 by Hockey-78 typo
