Meh. that Smythe was basically a Pity trophy after Montreal swept them in 4 because he was the only player on that team. Hall apparently crapped the bed many times with that strong Hawks team. In fact, I think he was traded to the Hawks because jack Adams was furious with his weak goals in the playoffs.

Gretzky has said that about 5 different goalies. A few years back he told people Forsberg was the greatest forward he ever saw. A year later he answered Messier to the same question. A year after that, Lemieux. He is often boldly making those statements. So many it is hard to keep track of. Fuhr was definitely a good money goalie, but Billy Smith was a better money goalie.

The thing I remember most about that season was when Roy started punching McCarty in Net and Hasek skated over to challenge him.....But then slipped, fell and ended up tripping Roy in the process. Since I hated both guys as people, I laughed. I still respect both though. it seems like a prerequisite to being a superstar goalie is to also be a huge jerkoff Edit: here we go haha

For me, I like to break it down like Daryl Shilling used to . When I refer to all Star voting, I do not mean the yearly all star game. I mean the end of the year award ceremony where players are voted on like they vote on the Hart/Norris/Vezina.The vezina gets a bit hard to read before 82 or 83 when it merely went to whichever team had the lowest GAA before they changed the meaning of the trophy. Patrick Roy's goaltender record in all Star voting was somewhere like 4th, 2nd, 1st, 1st, 2nd, 1st, 3rd, 3rd, 4th, 1st. He was a top goalie in the regular season for years. The Playoffs are where he shines though. 2 Conn Smythe's with average habs teams winning the cup on his back and one with Colorado where he outshone other great players. no other player in history has 3 Smythes Hasek has a peak unmatched by many except Sawchuk. 2 hart trophies, 6 Vezina's on weak teams. He won a cup immediately when he went to a contender, but did not seem as dominating. Brodeur.....Harder to rank as he played behind one of the best defensive teams his entire career. Much like Dryden. but for career consistency, he is the Ray Bourque of goalies. Jacques Plante's all star voting was a bit lackluster because he was on the Stacked team, but once Doug Harvey was traded, people saw how brilliant he was and awarded him the Hart. People retroactively award him Smythes from before that trophy existed. Parent: 2 incredible years, but a very short career. Kinda puts him on the outside if career achievements mean anything to you Sawchuk has an incredible 5 year peak/Prime, but then alcoholism got the best of him. his career went on to be Ok, but not as great as that 5 year run. Dryden. Hard to rank. Played on arguably the best team ever and quit early. Hall: Was the best regular season goalie ever. But apparently was a bit of a Joe Thornton at crunch time. Tretiak: Always heard a lot of great things about him

Just looking at his big years Well from 72-73 to 75-76, Clarke scored 426 points in 313 RS games for 1.36 pts per game. In that time Frame he scored 56 points in 61 playoff games for 0.91 pts per game. I expect a drop in the playoffs of course, and I know Clarke was an amazing player. He was still the guy other teams tried to shut down in the regular season and who tried to shut down their top guys. MacLeish in 72-73 to 74-75 (I omit 75-76 since he was injured half the season and missed the playoffs), scored 256 points in 236 games for 1.08 pts per game. In the playoffs he scored 49 points in 44 games and many claim missing him was a key reason they got stomped so badly in 76 I am just trying to figure out if Macleish is an unsung hero and why Bill Barber gets into the Hall of fame and MacLeish does not. Do Flyer fans consider him an unsung hero? The guy who upped his game at crunch time and was respected as a great two way player?

When I look at Shorthanded numbers, between 72-80, I see Clarke with 25 SHG, Barber with 23 SHG, and MacLeish with 21. Their goals Against indicated Clarke was definitely their #1 Pker, but Macleish definitely got his time as well.

For everything else Clarke brought, I always heard the same of MacLeish. I heard he stepped up his game in the postseason, and was always regarded as a tremendous defensive forward as well. Being the guy asked to PK and play a checking role. I was just hoping for insight Clarke's numbers may have dropped due to playoff hockey, but MacLeish's went up

I am aware that Parent won both Conn Smythe trophies during their cup runs. Who would you have chosen as MVP of those 2 cups if you were to choose a skater? Leach won A conn Smythe in a non-cup year due to his ridiculous 19 goals and 5 assists in 16 games. Other than that his playoffs seem a bit bare. Bobby Clarke's numbers seemed to have a dropoff in the playoffs. I know he is one of the greatest defensive forwards ever. but why the point production dropoff? Rick MacLeish intrigues me as his playoff numbers seem to be team best. He stepped up his numbers a lot for the playoffs and is generally regarded as a very good defensive forward as well. On paper he looks like a safe choice. Thoughts? I am also having some "All time top 5-10" threads in the "Around the NHL" forum. Just kinda curious as to what people think around here. I know the usual names that come up. Hasek, Roy, Brodeur, Plante, Sawchuk, Hall, Tretiak, Dryden, Parent etc and others Ill throw my 2 cents in a post after, but if you were to rank them using all of the usual "Peak, Prime, and Career" Peak being the year they were their absolute best Prime being their string of years they were at the top Career being their overall Body of work. Including regular season AND playoff play

I doubt nobody is interested in him. The Sharks in Particular would not mind having a 25 goal, 60 point scorer provided he would take a 1 year contract as low as 2 Mill to prove he can hit that level again. I suspect a few teams would be thinking along those lines for the potential
