  2. Anze Kopitar proud of reaching Kings’ games played record in season of many possible milestones By Associated Press Published October 22, 2023 07:10 PM LOS ANGELES — Anze Kopitar is likely to reach many milestones this season. The one he accomplished Saturday night has a bit more significance. Kopitar skated in his 1,297th game to become the Los Angeles Kings leader in games played. He surpassed former teammate Dustin Brown during the Kings’ 4-2 loss to the Boston Bruins. “It’s up there with all of them really. To be fairly durable during my career and to do it just here is something I take pride in,” Kopitar said. “It is a big honor to be with one franchise and to be successful and to do it along Brownie, Drew (Doughty) and Quicky (Jonathan Quick) for quite a few years. A brotherhood was created, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. It’s a humble feeling.” The Kings selected Kopitar with the 11th overall pick in the 2005 NHL Draft. He is one of 10 players from that draft who are still playing. That includes Pittsburgh superstar Sydney Crosby, the top overall pick that year, and Quick, who went to the Kings in the third round. Quick was in net for Los Angeles for 16 seasons before being traded last season. He’s now with the New York Rangers. Kopitar, Brown, Doughty and Quick were part of the core for the Kings’ two Stanley Cup titles in 2012 and ’14. Brown retired at the end of the 2021-22 season and knew his record wouldn’t last long. In a taped message played during the first period, Brown said: “Two things need to happen for this type of record to be broken. First and foremost, you are one (heck) of a player, and everyone knows that. And the second thing is, you’re old.” The 36-year-old Kopitar laughed as he watched the message from the ice but admitted that knowing who he was surpassing was a strange feeling. “I am passing my very good buddy, but if there were a script where we all could have finished on the same number, I’m sure we would have signed it gladly,” he said. Kopitar - who has 395 goals and 751 assists for 1,146 career points - has led the Kings in scoring in 15 of the last 17 seasons. He has also been Los Angeles’ captain since 2016. Kings coach Todd McLellan said he was using Kopitar as an example for younger players while coaching other teams. “We’ve used him a lot. When trying to show young players key situations and how to play them, we used No. 11,” McLellan said. “He really understands the whole picture. He knows moments and he plays the right way minute in and minute out.” Kopitar is fourth among active skaters in games played. The Kings are also the third club that has been around for at least 10 seasons and has the franchise leader in games played still active, joining Washington (Alex Ovechkin) and Pittsburgh (Crosby). The Kings are also the seventh of the league’s 32 franchises whose career games played leader was born outside North America. Kopitar, though, is the first player from Slovenia to play in the NHL. While fans received pucks to honor Saturday’s occasion, a ceremony for all of Kopitar’s milestones will be held later in the season. He needs seven assists to pass Marcel Dionne for the franchise record. He is five goals shy of becoming the fourth player in Kings’ history to reach the 400-goal mark. Kopitar also needs nine points to move past Luc Robitaille for second on the scoring list. After signing a two-year extension during the offseason, Kopitar is under contract through the 2025-26 season and shows no signs of slowing down. Last season, he received his second Lady Byng Trophy after having only four penalty minutes in nearly 1,655 minutes of ice time. Kopitar and Doughty are the elder statesmen on the Kings, who look to contend in the Western Conference and win their first playoff series since they won their second title in 2014. Coincidentally, Doughty played in his 1,100th game on Saturday night. “It’s a lot easier to stay in one place when you win already versus exploring other teams to try and win. I’ve felt great here right from the start,” Kopitar said. “It has been a good ride, and it’s not quite finished yet. I have a few more years in me.”
  3. 7-0 looks like hockey form to me....but, limited sample size.
  4. It used to be a weekly going on about random nhl stuff with a lil bit of other sports/life swill sprinkled in, meant to stir up light conversation.... I used to call it the "randumb rumbling's"
  5. Yup....NHL is being very tight lipped as to exactly what happened, but pinto is not appealing the ruling.
  6. But, as of this moment, it's been confirmed that he was not betting on NHL game, and he was not playing either, so.... Very tight lipped as to what exactly happened.
  7. And yet the NHL advertises sports betting on helmet and the boards.....pot/kettle.
  8. I was wondering sumthin..... If i wrote a weekly goof, would anyone here read it. I used to write a weekly goof back when SDHF was around, was entertaining the idea of going it again.
  9. I was ok with it, cause i picked up Jake Allen for my fantasy team...lol.

  11. Game # 7 CGY 1 NYR 3 Erik Gustafsson's goal and assist lift the Rangers over the Flames 3-1 ByAP Updated: Oct 25, 2023, 02:43 am CALGARY, Alberta -- — Defenseman Erik Gustafsson scored once and added an assist on Tuesday night as the New York Rangers scored three times in the second period en route to a 3-1 victory over the slumping Calgary Flames. Chris Kreider, with his team-leading fifth goal, and Alexis Lafreniere also scored for New York. Filip Chytil chipped in with a pair of assists. “It’s coming. We’re building some stuff, some stuff we want to work on,” said Kreider, about the team's power play, in which he has scored three of his goals. “Each game presents a different challenge, different kill, different opportunities at different times.” Blake Coleman scored the lone goal for Calgary, which has lost three in a row and gone 1-4-1 since winning their season opener. “I don’t want to use the word embarrassing, but that’s a home game that we needed to come out and win and we didn’t,” said Coleman. “I think a lot of guys are pissed off and I hope everybody handles it the right way and uses that as motivation.” After giving up a goal on the second shot of the game, New York goaltender Igor Shesterkin shut the door the rest of the way. He finished the night with 24 stops to improve to 3-2-0. “He was really good tonight,” New York coach Peter Laviolette said. “We were defending too much at the end of the game and there were certainly saves that were important throughout the game, and especially in the third period there was a couple of real beauties.” Jacob Markstrom made 17 saves for Calgary. Down 1-0 entering the second period, the Rangers surged in front with three unanswered goals, propelled by a lethal power play. Lafreniere tied it 1-1 at 7:38, neatly deflecting Gustafsson’s point shot out of mid-air. The goal came shortly after Elias Lindholm intercepted a pass but before he could clear it, the puck bounced off his stick and back to New York. Seven minutes later, the visitors made it 2-for-2 with the extra man. Again on a sequence that began with a point shot, this time it was Artemi Panarin who sent a shot just wide of the net where Kreider, camped at the side of the crease, redirected the puck over Markstrom’s shoulder. The Rangers extended their lead to 3-1 at 16:53 of the second, this time with the teams playing four a side. Chytil’s long shot dribbled through the pads of Markstrom and Gustafsson was right there to poke it past the line. Calgary mounted a push halfway through the third period, but the Flames could not solve Shesterkin. Shortly after he stuck out a pad to deny a dangerous shot from Nikita Zadorov, and then he slid across the crease to deny Jonathan Huberdeau on a one-timer. The Flames got off to a fast start with Coleman, after finding himself all alone in front, took a pass from Mikael Backlund and buried his second goal of the season. The Rangers finished 2-for-5 with the extra man. Calgary entered the night with the league’s second-best penalty kill having killed off 21 of 22 on the season. “You’re on the road, you’re dealing with some time changes and travel and that sort of thing, and I think the guys stuck with it,” Laviolette said. “Every game can’t be an A-plus game. You want it to be, and if it’s not you try to fix it and correct it so it is an A game.” The Flames went 0-for-4 with the man advantage. KADRI SLUMPING Nazem Kadri was held off the scoresheet and through seven games, the 33-year-old has just one assist while being a team-worst minus-8. The Flames’ second-highest-paid player is in the second year of a seven-year, $49 million deal. Adam Ruzicka, who opened the game as Kadri’s left winger, was injured late in the first period when he was sent flying head and shoulders first into the sideboards on a heavy hit by Jimmy Vesey. Down on the ice for a couple minutes, he was favoring his arm/shoulder when he was helped off.
  12. Game # 6 Bos 3 Chicago 0 Poitras and Frederic help undefeated Boston Bruins blank Chicago Blackhawks 3-0 0:53 Matthew Poitras' breakaway goal pads Bruins' lead Matthew Poitras gathers the puck on the breakaway and zips it past the goalie to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead over the Blackhawks. ByAP Updated: Oct 25, 2023, 12:37 am CHICAGO -- — Closing out a four-game trip that included multiple time zones, Matthew Poitras and the Boston Bruins had more than enough to put away the Chicago Blackhawks. Poitras and Trent Frederic scored 56 seconds apart in the third period, and the Bruins beat the Blackhawks 3-0 on Tuesday night to match the best start in franchise history. Pavel Zacha also scored for Boston, which began the trip with wins at San Jose, Los Angeles and Anaheim. Jeremy Swayman made 23 saves in his 10th career shutout. “It's special. That's important for us moving forward,” Swayman said. “We knew that we had a challenge ahead of us, coming to the West Coast, time change, everything that you can find excuses for. But I think we used it to our advantage and it's a lot of momentum moving forward.” The Bruins moved to 6-0 in the franchise's centennial season. Boston also won its first six games of the 1937-38 season. "Starting to see our team identity build because I think the LA game and this game tonight, you’re starting to see us become a heavy, grinding team, which I think is what we’re going to have to be,” Bruins coach Jim Montgomery said. Petr Mrazek made 40 stops for Chicago in its third consecutive loss. The Blackhawks also lost to the Bruins on Oct. 11, falling 3-1 in Boston. The Bruins were in control for most of the night, but it was only good enough for a 1-0 lead before Poitras and Frederic helped put it away. The 19-year-old Poitras skated past veteran Blackhawks forward Corey Perry and beat Mrazek on the glove side at 4:06. The rookie forward scored his first two NHL goals in a 3-1 win at Anaheim on Sunday. “I saw a lot of open ice, so just skate as fast as I can and I was fortunate to pull away and find the back of the net,” Poitras said. Frederic made it 3-0 when he knocked home a slick pass from James van Riemsdyk. It was Frederic's second goal of the season. “I’m kind of at the point, tired, one year’s enough of we’re a hard-working team,” Chicago coach Luke Richardson said. “I think we want to push for more this year. I think we start off with a good intention, but I find the other teams, not outwork us work ethic wise, but I want to say the hardness of the work, I mean like physical 1-on-1 battles.” Chicago appeared to jump in front on Connor Bedard's power-play goal with 6:45 left in the first period. Boston defenseman Charlie Coyle passed the puck right to Bedard, who beat Swayman with a rocket from the slot. But it was waved off after an offside challenge by Montgomery. The United Center crowd of 19,370 booed when the ruling was announced. Boston grabbed the lead on Zacha's first goal of the season 3:50 into the second. Zacha tipped home a shot by Kevin Shattenkirk from just inside the blue line. Boston dominated the period, outshooting Chicago 18-7. But Mrazek kept the Blackhawks in the game. OUCH Bruins forward Jakub Lauko was clipped by Blackhawks forward Jason Dickinson’s skate in the third, leading to a cut on his face. “Lauko’s good, thankfully," Montgomery said. "Scary with the skate, but he got it in the corner of the eye. It’s good. Nothing touched the eye. Stitched up. Not going to be looking good for a while.”
  13. Game # 6 Flames 2 Wings 6 Alex DeBrincat notches hat trick as the Red Wings win fifth straight by downing Flames 6-2 Alex DeBrincat scores to complete hat trick ByAP Updated: Oct 22, 2023, 08:27 pm DETROIT -- — Alex DeBrincat continued his hot start with his fifth career hat trick and the Detroit Red Wings extended their winning streak to five games by defeating road-weary Calgary 6-2 on Sunday. DeBrincat, acquired in an offseason trade with Ottawa, increased his season goal total to a league-high eight. “I’ve played with a lot of great players in my career, and I’ve tried to watch them and see where they go and learn some things from all of them,” DeBrincat said. “I think it is a little bit of that and a little bit of natural instincts. I was always smaller than everyone else, so I had to find different ways to score other than powering to the net.” Joe Veleno scored his third goal in two games and Dylan Larkin supplied a goal and an assist. Jake Walman scored his first goal this season, while Justin Holl and Lucas Raymond added three assists apiece. James Reimer made 29 saves for the Red Wings. Detroit was playing the second game of a back-to-back after winning at Ottawa on Saturday afternoon. “I don’t want to say this was a trap, but after such an emotional game yesterday and playing back to back, an inexperienced team might have come out flat,” coach Derek Lalonde said. “I challenged our guys not to do that and they came out with a pretty good effort.” Andrew Mangiapane and Yegor Sharangovich scored for Calgary. Dan Vladar stopped 24 shots for the Flames, who finished 1-3-1 on a five-game road swing. “Six games in and a lot of hockey left to be played but we’ve got to pick it up,” Flames center Mikael Backlund said. “We don’t want to fall behind here. We want to say within the race.” DeBrincat's first goal of the game came off a pass by Holl 1:59 into the game. Veleno scored midway through the first period when he deflected a Ben Chiarot shot from the point. Detroit made it 3-0 two minutes into the second period. DeBrincat made a circle-to-circle pass to Larkin, who lifted a shot over Vladar's right shoulder. Calgary got on the board with 7:48 left in the period when Mangiapane knocked in a rebound of a Backlund shot. Detroit quickly responded when Larkin set up DeBrincat for a one-timer that beat Vladar on the stick side. “Cat’s hockey sense is off the charts,” Larkin said. “Everyone knows he can score, but it is how he finds space and how he finds pockets. It honestly took a little bit to get used to playing with a player who is looking for spots where most guys can’t score.” Sharangovich cut the Wings' lead to two late in the second period on a shot from the point. Shortly after Walman's goal, DeBrincat collected his hat trick with 16:16 remaining on a blast from the left circle that beat Vladar on the short side. “If you turn over as many pucks as we did, you’re asking for it,” Calgary coach Ryan Huska said. “Then it’s just a steady dose of odd man rushes coming back against. That’s not a recipe for winning at any level.” Flames D Rasmus Andersson served the first game of his four-games suspension. The league handed down the suspension for a charging penalty committed at Columbus on Friday. ... DeBrincat set a franchise history by scoring eight goals in his first six games with the club. Ed Litzenberger held the previous record with six goals in his first six games with Detroit in 1961. ... Larkin has 16 points in 15 career games against Calgary.
  14. Game # 5 Bos 3 Ducks 1 Bruins rally past Ducks, extend season-opening win streak to five 0:42 Matthew Poitras' 2nd goal puts Bruins ahead for good ByAP Updated: Oct 23, 2023, 12:17 am ANAHEIM, Calif. -- — Matthew Poitras scored his first two NHL goals in the third period and the Boston Bruins beat the Anaheim Ducks 3-1 Sunday for their season-opening fifth straight win. The 19-year-old Poitras, playing in his fifth career game, scored at 6:29 of the final period to erase the Ducks' lead and then got the go-ahead goal nearly 4 minutes later when he stuffed home the rebound of Jake DeBrusk's shot. Brad Marchand added an empty-net goal and Linus Ullmark made 32 saves as the Bruins remained one of three undefeated teams along with Vegas and Colorado. Marchand extended his points streak to five games while David Pastrnak saw his four-game goal-scoring streak come to an end. “It was a good win and we just kind of stayed together and stuck with it,” Poitras said. “It was maybe not our best, but we were able to get the job done.” Mason McTavish scored the lone goal for the Ducks, who lost their third straight and fourth in five games this season. John Gibson made 25 saves. Anaheim lost despite a 31-26 advantage in shots on goal, but Ducks coach Greg Cronin hardly was satisfied. Cronin said his team should have put at least 40 shots on goal, if not more, in a refrain of what he has been preaching in the early part of the season. “At this point, it's going to be like a value system,” said Cronin, who insisted that simple math says more shots on goal will yield more goals. “We're going to just shoot pucks. I don't care if it's from the (opposite) goal line. Just put them at the goalie's pads.” The Ducks were the first to break through in the scoreless game as McTavish scored on a rush with Ryan Strome at 5:05 of the third period. Strome’s shot on Ullmark rebounded into the slot and McTavish got enough on his shot to slide in the goal off the left post for his second of the season. Poitras needed just 1:24 to even the score when he took a centering pass from Morgan Geekie from the left side of goal and scored out front past Gibson, who was late to get back into position from the left post. It was a goal Poitras said he had been dreaming about, “my whole life, really.” “Especially a lot more the last couple of weeks and knowing that I'm playing here.” Poitras said. “Maybe I was a little tired at the start of the third (period) but to see that one go in, it felt great.” Piotras was later in perfect position when DeBrusk’s shot rebounded off Gibson’s chest. Piotras cleaned up the loose puck for his second goal and a 2-1 advantage at 10:20. Marchand’s fourth goal of the season came with 2:34 remaining after the Ducks pulled Gibson for an extra skater. The Bruins missed a prime chance to take an early lead on DeBrusk's short-handed breakaway just over a minute into the game, but his shot on Gibson hit the left post. DeBrusk returned to action after being held out from Saturday’s victory over Los Angeles for being late to a meeting. Boston had a 13-8 advantage on shots in the first period, while Anaheim forced the issue in the second period with a 10-4 advantage. “I have a lot of faith in my boys in front of me, making the right plays and keeping their guys to the outside” Ullmark said. “That's what we have to do. ... We did all the things in the right way there in the third when we had the lead." Bruins forward Trent Federic went to the locker room late in the second period after he absorbed a hip check from the Ducks’ Radko Gudas in the lower abdomen. Bruins defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk made his return to Anaheim and received a short tribute video in the first period after playing the previous three seasons in Anaheim. Ducks rookie Leo Carlsson was an observer Sunday as a healthy scratch following a road game Saturday against Arizona. Carlsson, the No. 2 overall selection in this year’s NHL Draft, made his NHL debut Thursday and scored a goal on his first career shot against Dallas. He did not register a point in 22 minutes against the Coyotes. The Ducks are expected to keep the 18-year-old forward on a moderate early workload as he adapts to the NHL.
  15. LA Kings Captain Anze Kopitar to Set Franchise Record on Saturday for Most Games Played October 20, 2023 Anze Kopitar, who this past Thursday played in his 1,296th regular season game, on Saturday will pass former teammate Dustin Brown for the most games played in LA Kings history when the Kings host the Boston Bruins. Tomorrow night’s game against the Boston Bruins at Crypto.com Arena will be Kopitar’s 1,297th career game. Brown (1,296 games) had held the record since 2019 after he surpassed Dave Taylor (1,111). Drew Doughty (1,099) is expected to pass Taylor in the coming weeks to place third all-time. The milestone is one of many Kopitar is expected to reach this season. He is seven assists shy of surpassing Marcel Dionne for the franchise record in that category. He is also five goals shy of the 400-goal plateau, and nine points shy of surpassing Luc Robitaille for second-most points all-time in that category in Kings history. The game this past Thursday in Minnesota also marked Kopitar’s 647th career road game, which surpassed Brown (646) for the most road games played by a King all-time. To commemorate the achievements, Kopitar will be featured in a special on-ice ceremony at Crypto.com Arena later this season.

  17. Game # 4 Bos 4 LA 2 Marchand scores twice, Pastrnak has goal, 2 assists as Bruins beat Kings 4-2 to stay unbeaten ByAP Updated: Oct 22, 2023, 02:36 am LOS ANGELES -- — Brad Marchand scored twice, David Pastrnak added three points and became the first Boston player in 21 years with a goal in each of the first four games, and the Bruins remained unbeaten with a 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night. It is the third time in Marchand’s 15-year career he has recorded a point in each of the Bruins’ first four games (three goals, three assists). He scored Boston's final two goals and had an assist in the first period. Pastrnak, who was second in the league with 61 goals last season, had a goal and two assists. He is the first Bruins player since Dimitri Kvartalnov in 1992-93 to open the season with a goal in four straight games. Pastrnak is off to another fast start with five goals and eight points. Morgan Geekie scored the go-ahead goal in the second period for the Bruins, who are off to their first 4-0 start since 1990-91. “I think we started to get more physical. We got emotion into our game. … And then I think we just wore out the back of the net," Bruins coach Jim Montgomery said. "We held onto pucks. I think we really saw the type of team we believe we can be.” Los Angeles had its two-game winning streak snapped on a night when Anze Kopitar skated in his 1,297th career game, passing Dustin Brown for most games played in franchise history. Los Angeles' Alex Laferriere scored his first NHL goal to tie it at 1 in the second period before Geekie and Marchand scored in a 48-second span later in the period to put the Bruins up for good. Boston's Derek Forbert had a pair of assists and Jeremy Swayman stopped 32 shots. Carl Grundstrum had a power-play goal late in the third period for Los Angeles, and Cam Talbot made 21 saves. Pastrnak opened the scoring at 13:10 of the first period. with a wrist shot from the top of the left faceoff circle that went off the crossbar and into the net. Laferriere evened it at 1 at 6:28 of the second period on a breakaway. The 21-year old forward, who was playing in his fifth NHL game, was able to get a wrist shot as he was going down to one knee after being pressured from behind by Boston defenseman Brandon Carlo. “It was just an unbelievable play by my linemates. Kevin (Fiala) made a great pass to PL (Pierre-Luc Dubois) and then PL found me kind of right up the middle,” Laferriere said. "I was feeling the pressure, so good to get the first one.” Geekie put in his first as a member of the Bruins at 14:45 of the second with a rebound after Derek Forbert’s shot from near the blue line went off Milan Lucic’s skate. “Just right place, right time kind of thing," Geekie said. "Just try to give it a little extra effort to get through there and just get inside and make a play on the puck.” Marchand then made it a two-goal lead at 15:33 when his wrist shot from the top of the slot went between Talbot’s legs for his second of the season. Marchand extended the lead to 4-1 at 17:48 of the third after getting a great pass from Pastrnak in front of the net. TOUGH START AT HOME Los Angeles was one of the top teams in the league at home last season, but are 0-2-1 in their first three to open this campaign. The Kings though did not get an easy schedule to start the year on home ice with two division champions (Colorado and Carolina) and President's Trophy winner Boston as the opposition. “We talked about needing measuring tools and measuring sticks. Those are three teams that you have to beat especially on home ice at some point,” Kings coach Todd McLellan said. "When I look at how we lost those games, we gave up two shorties, we lacked details on face offs, our net play, we gave up 13 goals against those three teams in our building. "I think we have a pretty good path right now as a team of where we need to go and what we need to work on. We can get there. I really believe we can. But we now have some direction. And that’s not a bad thing to have.”
