  1. that's a good way to put it FC. After all the seriously run-of-the-mill backups we pretended were starters Brian Boucher's rookie season was a breath of fresh air. Too bad it didn't last. After reading Aziz's post about Boosh it makes me wonder why Reggie never found a way to correct those flaws.

re: Roenick and his prediction - what the hell is he on anyway? Not only is he confused about the 2 Masons in the NHL but who in their right mind could look at last season and say "no way, Steve Mason can't possibly carry a team to the Cup"?

As a matter of fact it's just the opposite - finally, after many long years the Flyers' goaltending gives them a dependable chance to win.

Well... I for one don't think Mason has shown the potential to be the goaltender to CARRY the Flyers to the Cup. Is he good enough that if the team gets a good roll going he can be a competitive enough goalie to help them along the way? Yes. But not carry them ala Quick from his first Cup.

  2. GREAT pick up by the Pens. I always imagined Recchi working with the kids in a coaching capacity.....they will get a nice bang for their buck outta this guy. Could not imagine a better guy to help shape the youngsters games. Rutherford made a nice solid move here!!

I credit that one to Lemieux. Much like the Guerin hiring actually. I think there's a short list of names Lemieux has on speed dial for when they become available. Guys like Tocchet and Recchi have always lived here, and I think that may be part of the reason why.

  3. The Pittsburgh Penguins have named Mark Recchi player development coach, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Jim Rutherford.

Recchi, 46, will be responsible for working with and assisting in the development of young prospects and players throughout the Penguins' organization in the minor leagues as well as in junior and college hockey.

Recchi, a Kamloops, British Columbia native, was the Penguins' fourth-round draft pick in 1988. He scored 154 goals and 385 points in 389 games over three different stints in Pittsburgh.

In 1990-91, Recchi led the Penguins in scoring during the regular season with 40 goals and 113 points in 78 games - then added 10 goals and 34 points in 24 playoff games as the Penguins captured their first Stanley Cup.

Recchi played in 1,652 games in a 22-year NHL career with the Penguins, Philadelphia, Montreal, Carolina, Atlanta, Tampa Bay and Boston. He retired in 2011 after registering 577 goals and 956 assists for 1,533 points. He also won Stanley Cups with Carolina and Boston.

Recchi, who lives in Pittsburgh, has spent the past two years involved with the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite youth hockey program. During that period he was also a senior advisor in the Dallas Stars organization.

  4. The Pens have come to terms with Simon Despres, two years at $900k per year. Very nice deal for the Pens, I've liked Despres, and don't think he was given a chance under DFB. That should be it on defense to start the year(unless they can find someone to take Scuds off our hands).

    That's great. Let's see what he's got!

  5. Well i don't claim to be a math scholar by any mean so lets keep it simple shall we.

His sv% 944% from 12-13 plus his sv% from this past regular season 917% then add in his sv % from the playoffs 939%....averages out to 933%.........no????

    Your calculator has something different???

That is the way i crunched the numbers.

The wins loss i mixed up with his total including games in Columbus which i noted earlier.

Also i'm not debating weather or not he is a top 5 goaltender. I can't put him there yet but he has the potential but lets just see if he can improve on last year before i try to predict anything like that. I like his play this past playoff he is the only reason it went 7 games and kept it close in the 7th game.

You can't just roll the seasons together that way though bud. His .944 was over SEVEN games. @ruxpin is right. 1809 saves out of 1966 regular season shots faced as a Flyer. That's a .920 save%.

  6. @doom88

Fleury beat his postseason issues this past year. He had two absolutely abysmal postseasons, but he's also had at least two very good ones. Taking accomplishments away, I see Fleury as the more skilled as far as athleticism, but Mason appears more sound in his positioning. They have similar stats in front of teams with similar lack of attention to defense. Though in fairness our defense was largely AHL at points of the season.

I think they're very comparable this past season.

I'd take Letang in a heartbeat on the Sharks. I'd even take the whole salary as long as I did not need to give up certain prospects for him. God our need for a Left handed Dman to play alongside Braun.....

Even despite the question marks on his health.

But that will never happen. The fact that most of our players have NMC's, and certain prospects and younger players have been declared untouchable(Hertl, Nieto, Mueller, Braun, Vlasic).

I am still trying to figure out if we should be ade at you for unloading Kennedy on us? Or if you are mad at us for Unloading Doug Murray on you :P We did turn the pick for Murray into a trade up for Mirco Mueller lol.

    .

Murray served his purpose here and moved on. Kennedy? We were happy to be rid of him. You poor saps just paid him too much to have him.

  8. I am sure Roenick was saying Bryz was a high end goalie and would win us a cup some day lol. Boy is he wrong about Mason I think Mason is already and will prove it this year to be a top 5 goalie in the league. Hes still insanley young for a goalie. We finally have a legit goalie since Hextall and now Roenick has something bad to say about our netminding fcking great timing!

I'll agree Roenick is a moron. But Mason is top 5 in the league? Wow.. That's quite a stretch there.

Dishonor? He was a big dude that steamrolled people, but when I think of the word dishonor I'm thinking dirty, stick play and knee shots and slew foots. I never thought of Lindros as dirty, and certainly not in the same area code as Cooke and freakin Avery. I think you may be viewing Lindros through the same tinted glasses that Flyer fans view Crosby

    and @Podein25

He dishonored the game by refusing to play for the franchise that drafted him.  Really?  I have to go through all of this AGAIN?   LOL   As for his hits, he frequently hit other players in the head with his forearms and shoulders.  A result of how tall he was I'm sure, but if everyone else can be held to that standard, so can he.  *shrugs*

    @brelic

Maybe I took Stewart's words a bit differently, but it sounded more to me like Stewart didn't care for Lindros already and so Lindros wasn't getting the benefits of the doubt on any calls.  The poster stories and such just made it worse.  In all honesty, I think a lot of players shouldn't get the benefit of the doubt and others should.  When I play the game, I shouldn't get the benefit of the doubt.  I often play with that extra edge and the officials where I play know that.  When they call me for a stick or something, I chuckle and skate to the box, and they laugh about it too.  It's part of the game.  I don't expect the benefit of any doubt.  But when my defensive partner Mike maybe gets on that edge a little, he's a super skilled guy who rarely does any wrong, so he deserves the benefit of the doubt.  Officials know the difference, and so I think they judge intentions as well as results sometimes, and I have no problem with that.

  10. So no wrist surgery for now, I would have thought he'd have already tried injection therapy by now. Especially if this injury took place several months ago. Seems kinda late to go after possible surgery late in the summer if needed. I also read he had some shoulder injury in the the playoffs and will not have shoulder surgery either.

    ah... next year's excuse. :P

He has an infection. Stinky finger syndrome... Oh wait... ;)

  11. Reputation-based calls make sense. You know that if Giroux clocks someone, he probably didn't mean to injure the same way a clown like Cooke or Avery would. So you give a guy like Claude more benefit of the doubt - he brings a lot of value to the NHL. Avery and Cooke do not.

BUT, what Stewart is saying is different - he let his personal issues with Lindros affect the way he called the game. That's a problem!

I was with you in the first paragraph. The second however? I think Lindros deserved to be in a similar category as those two. Not the same, mind you, because he didn't bring the same style of dishonor but he brought dishonor none the less.
