  1. BTW while we are on the topic of Pelle and the Porche.  My kid had a game at the Flyers practice facility in Vorhees NJ, so while they were dressing and warming up I made a pilgrimage to the site of Pelle’s demise.

The Sommerdale school is long closed down and boarded up and looks like a haunted house.  That horrible wall is still there along with the steps he crashed into.  I sat there at the impact zone (that corner in the attached photo) and while I didn’t cry I did get very emotional and thought about Pelle the rest of the weekend.  It brought back a flood of memories and that gnawing feeling of “what if”? / “if only”!  I mean if he had hit the wall he would have sideswiped it and bounced off and had some injuries and paid a hefty fine for DUI.  But he had to ram into that opening where the stairway is.

I wasn’t prepared for how much visiting would grip me and affect me to be honest.  It was surreal.

The one thing about the games coming up is that the Flyers played all year with a set of D-men who are no longer in the lineup. Walker got traded the other 3 are hurt. With Walker, Seeler and Drysdale they beat some good teams this year, beat them convincingly. Now without those 3 it's getting ugly fast...

Ersson struggling to play well feels like it could be the final nail, shutting the door to their PO hopes this year.

Ahh thanks for that context!  That makes sense what you are saying and explains why as soon as I choose to begin my journey back they are struggling.  In some ways missing the PO could be a blessing so we see what we could be but don’t get too comfortable that we are there and then also get a better draft pick along the way.

  3. Ok so what I am getting a few games in is they are who we thought they were talent wise, but attitude wise they have an edge and can win some scrappy games.  Soooo we need more talent to win is basically the conclusion here and when they arrive we will have the scrappy attitude and swagger to back it up.

These absolute drubbing games at home were just murder to your soul as a STH.  You paid good money fought horrible traffic, found free parking (well I did anyway), walked far, bought overpriced food and drink, and then watched your team get destroyed and sullenly skulked back to your car, potentially fought more traffic on the way home and wondered why you didn’t just stay home with your family.

Nahhh I don’t miss it but if they get better and Hilferty keeps reviving the team back to what they were intended as founded, I could see a game plan in my future.  I have it with the Phillies and it has been AWESOME.

Too soon? Seriously though, this kid is the real deal and should be our franchise goaltender for the foreseeable future so let's hope he takes care of himself and doesn't do anything stupid to jeopardize his  career.

Bump! Hmmmm some clairvoyance from trevluk?

good lord what made you think of those 2?

What I remember most about Hatcher when the Flyers signed him was one word: Now? Nothing against the guy he had a fine career with Dallas but like a lot of Holmgren’s acquisitions long past his prime when the Flyers got him.

What I remember most besides him being old and slow was him taking out Mr. Ed Crosby’s teeth.

    Greetings:

The old farts will remember that we signed Mike Rathje and Derian Hatcher post-strike:

    https://www.hockeyforum.com/threads/flyers-sign-hatcher-rathje-and-therien.32782/page-2

We found out that meant "Twin Pylons" in our D.  Hatcher gave us some use.  As for Rathje, who was with San Jose:

    https://thehockeynews.com/news/philadelphia-flyers-defenceman-mike-rathje-sidelined-by-herniated-disc

He went on LTIR and contributed next to nothing.  I guess San Jose realized what the New NHL would bring.  Robert Earle Clarke and other GMs didn't.  Let's hope Briere breaks the mold.

What a pair they were! On the old Philly.com board we used to “affectionately” refer to them as “Hathje”

My opinion is I'd prefer a high pick over yet another early round playoff defeat. That's all. My wording said that, and only that.

I've seen plenty of Flyer playoff appearances. Going back to when we actually made playoff appearances that sort of mattered, we went 4 rounds in 2010. That "experience" got us to 2 rounds the next year. Then 2 the following year. Then we missed the next. Then one and done the year after that. Missed again. One and done again. Missed again. One and done again. Then 2 rounds. Then missed, missed, missed.

Explain to me this playoff experience pay off? When does it actually take? Cause we've done this before, and it didn't.

Right now, we have 1 (one) up and coming potential star player in Michkov. If anyone thinks thats enough to make this team a cup contender, no wonder you thought Hayes and Deangelo would too. We didn't get him by having a playoff round either.

I've seen the mediocre Flyers for way too long. I've drank the orange koolaid until I almost drowned in it. You can get excited over them if you like, I'd get more excited over a talent infusion. I'll bet if they can get Michkov over here, he helps this team way more than yet another Flyer playoff that ends with a loss. Finding him an elite centre would also help way more. Good luck getting that where we pick.

This team is playing over its head, good for them. But when you're supposed to be rebuilding, and your farm team needs an overhaul, and you have one blue chip prospect and maybe another one or two that look like they may be NHL calibre, it just looks to me like the same thing that's been going on here way too long. Not bad enough to draft high end talent, not good enough to win squat.  And here we are, right in the middle of the pack and everyone’sgetting excited over "Just make the playoffs and anything can happen". Again. Fool me once, shame on you...fool me decade after decade...

Wow thanks for reminding me again of some of the MANY reasons I dropped my season tickets!

The Flyers upper management, basically after their fans revolted and not because of intelligence, kicked arguably the worst GM in NHL historys sorry ass out of the organization. cheers.gif

And you may find yourself  (or at least the ones who actually knew Fletcher sucked) breathing a sigh of relief, and looking forward to a bright future.

And you may find yourself seeing Flyer management search high and low through their rolodex of ex-Flyers.

And you may find yourself looking at yet another ex-Flyer as GM

And you may say to yourself How did we get here?

Not as bad as the last 5 years, but certainly not much different than the previous decades. Lets hope Briere can catch lightning in a bottle on every 1st round pick we have...otherwise it's just going to be....

This was 1 of many steps that needed for me to consider coming back to the team.  Now that we are a year in what grade would you and the message board give Danny B so far?  I would give a rating if I had better knowledge as to his full body of work but honestly, I’ve been so unplugged from the team I am not qualified at the moment to give a proper evaluation.

Glad to see you back around these parts. You are not wrong in your thoughts and opinions.  The one thing I have learned over the past few years is that family comes first. I’m no longer overly involved emotionally with this team.  Again…. Glad to see you back.

Thanks also for the kind words, it’s good to see that I’m not alone in my feelings about what happened with the team last decade or more.  I was 9 when I started liking the Flyers and now, I’m a couple years away from 50. I guess you could say I grew up a bit too and lost some of my undying devotion for the team and focused on stuff that matters more.

Great to have you back! I, too, have started to watch on occasion. I have been using the temp of this board as my gauge. It seems somewhat safe these days!

    Go Flyers!!!!

Thanks for the kind words it’s nice to be back and glad to hear I’m not the only one who became a bit jaded.

I met Mike Richards once after a game in Toronto and quite honestly, he was the most miserable millionaire at the time. I think everything gets amped up in Philadelphia and he hated being under the microscope. It certainly didn't help that he and Pronger did not like each other at all.

I met him too at a “Meet the team” event and he was my favorite player at the time.  While I wasn’t expecting him to become my best friend, he could have uttered at least a word or 2.  I was trying to tell him how much we appreciated his hard work and was thanking him for signing my stuff and he didn’t say a thing and barely looked at me.  It was a bit disappointing as most players I’ve met at least treated me like a fellow human being .

    No. 11

“Big Bird” Don Saleski (we need more nicknames in 2020)

    Flocky Hockey - Ron Flockhart

    Kevin Dineen

    Dan Quinn

    Tony Amonte

    Mike Sillinger

I think Recchi had 11 at one point??

Correct on all counts but you are missing one message board favorite: JonSimJonSimJonSimJonSim

also don’t forget these other Treasures to wear 11, Daigle, Jody Hull, Jiri Latal, Steve Kaspar, Blair Betts, and that guy again named Pat Sharp also donned the 11.

There was also a journeyman named Len Hachborn who wore it in 1984-1985 and played in the first Flyers Game I ever saw.

Mel Bridgman. No offense to Leclair

The early 80s Flyers are my biggest gap in knowledge about the team as I have studied the cup teams history inside and out and I know every detail about the team like the back of my hand from November 1984 on.
