Maybe he is here reading. Well if you are Darcy, hear this. Keep Miller at all costs you damn fool. Where are you going to get a goalie as good as him? You are not. Have you gone mad? Miller and Vanek must stay you fool!!!!

Bryzgalov is still available. ;)

He's on record saying that the team is "rebuilding." Not "retooling" - "rebuilding." He has said there will be more "suffering" in the short term for long term success.

The Sabres as of today aren't going anywhere. They're not going to "compete for the Stanley Cup" and the roster they have currently signed isn't really going to "compete" for the playoffs.

If they can turn Miller and Vanek into a boatload of assets like young talent and high draft picks - and the team is in a "rebuilding" mode promising "suffering" - then that's what should be done. (To be clear, the time to do that was a few weeks ago...)

This isn't about "who's better than Miller" to replace him. There's no point to keeping a guy to win big games and get you to the playoffs if the roster has virtually no chance of getting there even if the goalie stands on his head half the time.

You wanted Regier to stay. You told anyone who questioned why a guy who has done very little for 16 years was being retained that they had no idea what they were talking about and that Regier is fabulous and wonderful.

You reap. You sow.

It's harvest time.

Stunningly accurate and outright hilarious in one fell swoop!! Really, it's an honour to read your thoughts!

I would have "liked" that - but "agreeing" with it seems too ridiculous. Thanks, jammer.

This simply displays the danger inherent in reflexively insisting that everyone on your squad is the best this-or-that and that your team always makes the right moves. Even more ridiculous when the team has missed the playoffs in four of the last six seasons and hasn't gotten out of the first round since 06-07.

When you nurture failure, you get failure.

Buffalo needed to go in a different direction from top to bottom when the new ownership came in. Unfortunately, he acted like a fanboy still living off the back-to-back Conference Finals in 05-06 and 06-07.

And apparently still is.

@radoran Like you said, they have to sit down, take an inventory of their assets and sell them off, assuming the return is acceptable. Miller and Vanek are their best two assets, thus the need to let them go and start the inevitable process of a "true" rebuild. They could get a boatload of picks/prospects and a mixture of legit NHL players mixed in.

Ya know, the sample size is smaller, but take a look at Enroth's stats compared to Miller's stats last season....

Miller: 40 games played, 2.81 GGA and a .915 Save %.

Enroth: 12 games played, 2.60 GGA and a .919 Save %.

I would suggest that the drop off from Miller to Enroth would be microscopically small, or maybe even a slight upgrade with more playing time for Enroth. More noteworthy is my belief that Hackett *might* just be the best of the 3 goalies mentioned, and he would then get valuable NHL experience being the primary back-up. So, potentially, they get a large haul for Miller, still get the same tending (maybe even an upgrade) and a chance to cherry pick Hacketts start's against weaker opposition....win, win, and win.

It's hard to compare backups to starters, especially in a shortened season. You have to look at quality of opponent, etc.

The point is regardless of whether or not there is a "dropoff" - the right thing to do is move your top pending-UFA assets and get the best return you can on them. Assuming you are "rebuilding" and allowing for "suffering" in the short term, which is exactly what Regier has said to expect.

It's like seeing on the news that there's a hurricane going on and being surprised you got wet when you went outside.

@radoran

The dumbest thing is to let a gm who's really accomplished squat in 16 years attempt this rebuild.

"OK, we're going to blow this thing up and start over...., you've got 16 more years and THAT is it!"

Look, even if one wants to credit Regier with getting a team someone else built to the Finals and then two Conference Finals appearances in his first ten years... You need to flip that over and look at missing the playoffs in six of the past ten years, including four of the last six and never getting out of the first round in 06-07.

At this point, the best thing anyone can say about Regier is that he got a couple prospects and draft picks for Pominville and snagged a first for Gaustad.

Note that neither of those moves does/did anything to improve the team short term and, rather, leads directly to the "rebuilding/suffering" Sabres fans have been told to expect.

Yes, after six years of pretty abject failure now the GM is saying there will be "suffering."

Heckuva job, Darcy.

I am not going to throw in the towel and just discount this roster as having no shot. I could do the same to your team saying you have no defense and no goalie. Surprises happen every year in the NHL. Tell Steve Ott they have no chance.

He should never never say such things I will give you that. But when I look at this roster with Vanek and Miller and Ott and Myers and Erhoff and alot of young talent, I am not going to write them off. That is just plain ridiculous. Toronto played way over their heads with a no name roster last year, and for the first time since I can remember, got in. Do you think they are a cinch to repeat? I do not.

@Hockey Junkie

If your idea of success after 16 years of building is to "get in" the playoffs, sure they have a shot. Toronto missed the post season for a decade. It's only a matter of time until anyone makes it. Trying to build a champion is another thing. And Regier has proven he doesn't know how to do it. Nonis hasn't proven anything yet in Toronto.

You have to try and make the playoffs first. Then anything can happen. You cannot just walk into the season saying we are going to win it all. You have to be wiling to go out, work, and if you make it in, then you shoot for the stars. Your Flyers I am sure are taking the same approach. I am sure your coach is not coming right out and saying "we are going to win it all" a year after missing the playoffs? I look at our depth chart, and there are many worse ones in the league. Go Sabres!!!!

I do not.

Just for the record here, this isn't just my opinion, I am using the Sabres' GM's position on the state of the team

Sure, there is a chance. There's always "a chance."

But if your own general manager is talking about "rebuilding" and "suffering" I don't think "playoffs."

And, given that the team hasn't even made it to the playoffs in four of the last six years and didn't get out of the first round in the other two, "keeping Miller" on the off chance that lightning strikes the bottle just right and then potentially losing him for nothing seems, well, silly.

The comparison to the Flyers is ridiculous and you wouldn't even make it on another board. Well, OK, you might. Last year was the anomaly for the squad from Philadelphia. For the Sabres, it was in line with the previous five seasons.

@Hockey Junkie I don't think the Leafs were a fluke, they are a good team. They will be right back in the hunt, but this time around have improved goaltending. My guess is right in the middle of the pack, with a good chance they get home ice advantage in the playoffs.

Just like your boy Holmgren?

I'm the one that's been calling for Homer to be fired since before last season and agree with most of my Sabre friends who think Regier should have been gone years ago.

You're the one on here apologizing for Regier. And you're still doing anything you can do to avoid facing the facts which are routinely lain in front of you.

The only thing that's happened in this off season is that I've become an even bigger Sabres fan.

79 games next year.

The sad part is, Holmgrens team has 12 rounds of playoff hockey in that time frame and we're calling for his head. Regiers team has TWO rounds of playoff hockey and you're OK with that.
