  I am pretty sure Chara was hunted  and captured, had his back shaved and was taught to skate. It is the first North American confirmed sighting of a Chara-foot, living in captivity. When his career is over he will be set free back into the wild.

Chara has to be one of the most fit people that I have seen play the game. The guy's a beast. I imagine that his minutes will only increase during the Playoffs.
