Leafs assure themselves of flexibility

This is how you build a team when you are stinky. Sign a lot of vets to one year deals and see who deserves to come back the following year....the old spaghetti on the wall trick...what sticks and what does not.

Leafs on a one year deal this coming season...

1)Nazem Kadri = put up or shut up time loser.

2)Shawn Matthias = always liked his game, this is a solid signing. He might be poised to finally break out.

3)P.A. Parenteau = good set of hands, could garner some respectable totals with the right linemates.

4)Brad Boyes = still hanging around the league, still has nice hands...more of a pp specialist than anything else, but is still silky smooth.

5)Martin Marincin - Isn't he a goon type, not sure?

 6) Michael Grabner = Maybe the best acquisition for the Leafs this year.....one of the elite pk guys in the league and one of the 5 fastest skaters in all of hockey...can just outright fly!

 7) Nick Spaling = Nice gritty forward with a bit of offense once and a while....tough to play against.

 Leafs signed for 2 years

1)Daniel Winnick = Another guy who is tough to play against, the Leafs will not be pushed around this year, they will out hit you and outwork you.

2)Johnathan Bernier = 2 years to see if he has what it takes...I suspect it will be a wasted 2 years....but perhaps having a defense that actually has some facsimile of a transition game might be of great assistance.

3) Matt Hunwick....wily ol veteran famous for hard work and grit.

That is literally half their team....all signed for 1 or 2 years, terrific flexibility and really REALLY smart way to preserve your cap space. This almost makes up for paying Dion Phaneuf long term....lol. Still wondering if Gardiner smartens up and becomes an actual defensemen.....and Morgan Riley seems like he has stalled in his growth. Not good.

I agree with just about everything you say, jammer.

I would add that anything this team does on the good side will have to be due to Babcock's coaching because there really isn't much there in terms of talent. So Leafs fans will get a good idea of whether he was worth the money or not.

Gonna be an "interesting" season.  ;)

@BluPuk  First off, I LOVE Marvin the Martian...one of my all time favs...great choice for avatar!

The Leafs DO have talent. Not top end, but looking at all these one year deals...these guys BRING it...well, most of them. It will provide Babber with the ability to carry out his coaching scheme...which is of the utmost importance. The defensive ability to move the puck up ice is a sticky area of concern though.

LOL. An italicized "I" looks like a forward slash. I was trying to figure out what you meant there for a second.

It's also late at night too and I'm getting sleepy...

Or perhaps you have been shot with the space modulator!
