But he bares responsibility for being an uncoachable and disinterested (e.g., in learning English) player.
lynxrattle
In the good old days the Finns typically didn't leave the Finnish league until they had played there for a couple of seasons. Selänne was 22, Saku Koivu 21, Jere Lehtinen 22 when they made the transition. Olli Jokinen was 19, played a few games, came back to Finland, and returned to the NHL for the next season. In hindsight Puljujärvi and IMO Laine as well should have stayed in Finland and matured at least for a season, possibly two, before making the transition.
lynxrattle
Update on Pulju. He just played three games with the Finnish National Team, in the first line with lots of TOI and PP time. One assist. After the games he stated that he'd spend this season in Finland. He still needs a lot of development to make it in the NHL. We'll see how it goes for him, come spring and the IIHF championships. Right now it might be difficult to trade him.

Should probably have been left in Finland rather than brought over to play in the A - at least for a year or two. (As I think you noted earlier in the thread). 29 minutes ago, lynxrattle said: Right now it might be difficult to trade him. They're almost certainly not getting the value that they put into the draft pick in return for him.

KHL and and the European leagues had a small break. Even with that relatively weak opposition Pulju was not able to really light the lamp. And yes he should have stayed back for a year or two. Igor Larionov was following the games, interviewed by the Finnish media and he stated that too. It is really an exception a European player is able to switch to the NHL right away after the draft.

Now this is just a hunch, but it occurs to me that Pullsy is just not a very good hockey player. Now it occurs to me you were horribly, horribly wrong. Jesse is in the middle of making the U-turn of all the U-turns, for real.

I'm more than willing to cut slack on people who weren't bullish on Puljujarvi at the time. Between the actions of both player and team, the returns were pretty underwhelming at the time. What also came out later: Puljujarvi had a hip injury requiring surgery and the Oilers were stubborn about allowing it to happen. 34 minutes ago, Hockey-78 said: Jesse is in the middle of making the U-turn of all the U-turns, for real. He's still a developing player, but the good season he had last year is continuing this year as well. In 2020, by about game 7, Dave Tippett decided to put McDavid and Puljujarvi together, and it was a good match. Pulju is a good defensive player who backtracks *very* well, uses his speed and reach, disrupts and forechecks well. As the season progressed, he showed more and more flashes of that good shot from his junior days. This year, beginning in the pre-season, he began setting up in the crease as well, and he's a big/strong kid to move from there once he gets in. A *ton* of credit should go to -Ken Holland, for keeping the lines of communication open once he became GM. -Dave Tippett, for not attaching any baggage, and allowing him to come in and start with a clean slate. -Jesse Puljujarvi for the points I gave to each of Holland and Tippett, as well as for finally taking some damned English lessons.
lynxrattle
Nice GM work, for sure. The Oilers now either have a winger for McDavid or a Pulju with much more trade value. It's going to be interesting to see how he manages when he plays without McDavid or Draisaitl.
