  1. Cutting your losses on a bad decision is always tough, especially while the whole world is watching and the guy you let go is winning the Vezina.
  2. They also have Anthony Stolarz, Chris Mason and a number of other guys 24 and under. How many young goaltenders dose a team need? On this level, his decision makes sense.
  3. This whole "he can't skate" thing is over the top wrong. He hasn't played well this year but it isn't because he's a bad skater. He lacks an explosive first step but he's actually a pretty good skater. Has good balance and good lateral mobility. The more obvious problem is his confidence, which is at rock bottom. This is why it is better to let players develop in junior and the minor leagues, not to work on their skating but to allow them to play where they belong in the line up. Couturier doesn't belong centering the likes of Jay Rosehill and this is more likely to be at the root of the problem.
  4. I don't see any daylight between this and Homer's typical mindset when it comes to Russians, so I think we're safe. Also, with apologies to any Russian posters, I suspect the whole Bryzgalov experience makes it even less likely that Homer will use a high pick on a Russian.
  5. I was reading up on Darnell Nurse on HF and he sounds like a real winner. Tremendous player and a leader too. Did you see that he has a Philly connection? Donovan McNabb is an uncle and mentor. They talk a couple times a week.
  6. Agree. It is tough to score 5 on 5 when opponents make you the entire focus of their defensive game plan. There is no other consistent threat up front right now.
  7. There is a lot to like here. Obviously a very good athalete. He was quarterback of his state champion high school football team and had offers to play in college but chose hockey. Good pedigree too: his dad was a long time pro football player.
  8. Homer's almost certainly as dumb as some here are saying. Any smart GM, especially any smart Philly GM, knows there are two reasons to pursue players at the deadline: to acquire players and to drive up the price to rivals. So just because he's sniffing around doesn't men he's serious.
  9. I'm with you. Why get eliminated in round one when there is so much to gain by not making the playoffs at all? I was actually a little disappointed Boston didn't show up today.
  10. It seems likely to me that he'll be back because Snider just won't eat that much crow. But sane people everywhere will ask why Snider won't cut him lose. The best thing Snider or anyone else can say about him is "he's not the problem". Not: "he's been solid" or even "he's played ok"; he's "not the problem". Talk about damning someone with faint praise. But still, he'll probably keep him around when he should be blowing up the team. Go figure.
  11. Very difficult to say for sure where it comes from but my money is on Snider, with Homer imerely the one who makes the philosophy reality. No GM blows up the team every year unless the owner tells him to.
  12. @habsguy26 Too funny dude. Tyler Seguin on waivers and Fotinos with all the hardware (and he hasn't even been drafted in real life).
  13. I just read that the Flyers now have over $62MM committed to just 19 players next year and he cap will be $64MM. If that's true, then this really IS interesting.
  14. Touché and so true. Kids don't always move on quickly from stuff like that.
  15. I have a seven year old and it's been tough. I tried to keep it simple ("they are fighting over money") but that led to more questions and puzzled looks. He asked me about it at least a couple times a week ("are we there yet?") and while it was a pain in the neck, I respect the kid's die hard interest in the game. He's the kind of fan both sides were banking on.
  16. I agree that if they can buy Pronger out at 100% of his contract, the only people who care are Comcast and Pronger's tax guy. And maybe me because I'm interested in how they structure it to cull out the guys who deserve 100%. You raise an interesting point in my mind because I feel pretty sure the NHLPA isn't going to burn guys who have valid contracts as well as hockey injuries that may have ended their careers. It would be grossly unfair to expose those guys to buyouts at less than the value of the contracts. There are probably not a lot of guys like that, but i really doubt the union left these guys exposed. The solution isn't immediately obvious to me so it will be interesting to see how it got handled. BTW, i'm not worried about Pronger; he's set for life several times over. The vulnerable guys are obviously the journeymen whose current contracts represent what little money they'll make playing hockey.
  17. The article mentions the buyout provision but none of the details. I'll still be very surprised if teams can buy out LTIR players at less than face value.
  18. At first I started to doze off, but then I became curiously aroused.
  19. I find it hard to imagine that the NHLPA agreed to a buyout of players on LTIR so, barring any unusual provision providing cap relief for this type of thing, we are probably still stuck with his contract and the off season juggling that goes with it.
  20. I'm especially glad it's a 10 year deal. Maybe Bettman will be gone by then.
  21. I've always been disgusted by the ads all over any European uniform. Those guys look like billboards out there. Check that. They ARE billboards. The US gets a lot of **** for commercialism but we don't stoop to those depths, at least when it comes uniforms.
  22. I've read about a dozen articles about "Ghost" and every one a rave review. Looks like a gem of a 3rd round pick.
  23. Upon further reflection and light reading.....could the Preds match & trade?
  24. The Flyers might have made an offer Nashville will have trouble matching. If that's the case, look for Nashville, and the league, to be very pissed about the rich team picking on the poor team and putting a lot of pressure on the Flyers to take back the picks and give roster players. I'd like to see the Flyers say no to that, especially since the Preds are sure to want Cooter, Simmonds, Voracek and what have you; in short, a package worth way more than 4 late first round picks. No thanks to that.
