  1. I honestly think this is a great signing and dont know why more teams didn't seem to show interest and why other people weren't talking about him. Yes, his game has gone down hill the past few years, but if given some decent ice-time he is still good for 15-20 to 25+ goals. So, for 1 million I think thats a great deal, have a feeling this could turn out to be a Mason Raymond like situation, will have a decent year and could get a better deal come this time next year.

  2. @flyercanuck yea and to that point Bertuzzi has only made $26 million since the incident the number 36? that is how much money Bertuzzi has made his entire career. Though Moore might word it differently, his motive is likely "you wiped out my career, I'm going to wipe out yours". Though in this case it is also believed that the settlement of whatever Betuzzi is charged with will be split among himself and the Canucks.

On another point Moore was a business school graduate with a high IQ in the 140 area. He hasn't been able to get a business job cause he  can't work numbers and what not as good as he used to. It has taken away more than just his hockey career.

  3. For those unaware this September the case between Steve Moore and Todd Bertuzzi will finally go to court. Moore is suing Bertuzzi and the Vancouver Canucks for $36 million after his infamous sucker punch on Moore in a game back on March 8th 2004. The NHL is filled with dirty plays, hits from behind, punches, etc. But not every play sees supplementary discipline from the law like we will see in Bertuzzi- Moore case. So where do we draw the line? Remember when Shawn Thornton slew-foot Brooks Orpik and then punched his head into the ice in a game between the Bruins and Pens this year? Why no lawsuit here? Does it come down to the severity of the injury?

So essentially, where and when does the law trump the NHL's ability to hand out punishment?

  4. Not that they desperately need one, but if they were to add a top 6 forward to the mix it would be hard to not look at them as cup favourites if they aren't already in those talks.

  5. @goalnut3133  agree 100% and I mention a goaltender in my blog also. I think the reason was there weren't any highly touted goaltenders in that draft at the time, However, to me there is no question that is one of the handful of things missing from this roster. Dubynk to me is a solid backup, who can give a solid outing here and there, but I think if the Oilers are serious about making a playoff push they need a more proven number one goalie.

  6. So, last night on Hockey Night in Canada after the Vancouver-Edmonton game the panel discussed if back in 2012 the Oilers would have been better off selecting highly touted defenseman Ryan Murphy instead of Yakupov knowing that the team was in much dyer need of a solid defenseman rather than another offensive forward. In fact it was made public that the majority of the Oilers' scouts suggested they take a pass on Yakupov.

I find this especially interesting because a certain... me... wrote an article suggesting that Edmonton may not be drafting the way they should be. Here is the article http://www.hockeyforums.net/index.php/blog/46/entry-453-edmonton-oilers-are-they-drafting-right/

So, my question do you think Edmonton should have taken Murphy and do you think that they should change their drafting strategy?

  7. In my opinion he got the three preseason games, a minor slap on the wrist, but in my opinion it's all he deserved. Scott needs to learn to pick his battles, you would think a fighter like him would know "the code" you don't go after a teams star, at least in that fashion. In fact I hate how in an interview he Scott said, "if they went after our star id be pissed ".. Moron!

Sure, Kessel's slash was vicious and though I usually live with the ideal that "two wrongs don't make a right" in this case, if Scott doesn't jump him, Kessel doesn't wack him and no harm done.

Finally, I think Scott was jealous Kessel had more goals in the game then he has gotten playing his entire 180 game career . (1 goal, 4 assists)

  8. @cournoyer12 yea exactly a team like Ottawa should man-handle much of anyone really (coming from a Leaf fan who hates Ottawa). But in all seriousness I think a team like Boston would have absolutely embarrassed Montreal the great combination of size, grit, and skill. (I also hate them) LOL!!

    and welcome to the site.

  9. Yea to me the Sedins compliment the team perfectly, they play great against weaker teams and when there is no pressure, but when it means the most they don't come to play. To me they are now what the Sharks used to be. Which is why I think until the team has a big collapse in the regular season the organization is going to be blinded (not seeing what they actually have in front of them). They are a solid team, but they are further away from being a cup contender than people think.

  10. The Habs need to stop going after small forwards and get some guys with size who can put up numbers and be more physical. Essentially guys such as Pacioretty and Galchenyuk who won't be easily intimidated or pushed around. The Habs only significant move this off-season was adding Danny Briere who once again falls under the tiny, slightly under achieving, growing older forward (Scott Gomez syndrome). I like Briere and think he can provide offense, but I dont feel this is the type of player that the Habs should have been shopping for.

  11. I think Vancouver would benefit most by having a terrible season. To me it seems that they keep having great regular seasons and then when it comes to the playoffs they choke. They play much weaker teams in their division (Colorado, Calgary and Edmonton) so they rack up the points and seem to be prospering. So, I think the management seems to feel the team is stronger than they actually are. So, I feel if they were to have a weak season it would open management's eyes and help them to realize that changes need to be made. So, essentially fail in order to succeed later.

  12. Yea to me I think two years roughly 3-3.5 per is a good number, doesn't over pay him doesn't under pay him and the term gives the flexibility of both Jared and the Senators to see what he can do and what kind of player and contract he can attract as he matures and gets better

  13. The Sens have offered restricted free agent Jared Cowen an 8 year $28 million dollar deal. Cowen is obviously a young talented defenseman that the Sens would like to keep around for the foreseeable future. Cowen has made it clear that the term is more important to him than the dollar amount per year is. However, I find this deal kind of odd for both sides. For the Sens they would be committing to Cowen who, despite his great potential and skill, has yet to play very much at the pro-level and fully matured. So, I find it interesting they would be willing to give him an 8 year deal. On the other hand the deal works out to pay Cowen an average of $3.5 million per year (I assume the deal structures it differently). For Cowen I find this interesting because I think if he can play very well the next couple seasons, he could probably mark up his value to something greater than $3.5 million. To me it seems like a shorter term would work best for both sides, though it seems it's what Cowen wants, what do others think?

  14. I agree I think they could be dangerous looking at the top 6 of JVR-Bozak-Kessel and Lupul-Kadri-Clarkson, thats one of the most solid top 6s in the league. Leafs outplayed Boston most of the series except for game one and parts of games throughout the series (never an entire game). The Leafs had a better if not equal head to head record against every other top 8 in the East. People can say what they want about the Leafs now, but they are no longer a pushover and I think a lot more playoff hockey for the buds is coming.

  15. yea, but I wouldnt say his skating is any worse than Dion.. I think getting rid of Dion could free up space and allow money for more assets. I also think given the chance Franson could step up.. he's still very young and has a bit of maturing to do, I think he could still grow into a more elite dman

  16. The other thing that really sparked this question to me was the fact that rumours of trading Franson are coming up and a few on trading phaneuf. To me Phaneuf is way overpaid and although he does play against the big boys and what not he's too slow, doesn't shutdown players as well as he should, doesn't hit the scoreboard as much as he should. He is a great second line d-man or even first if he isn't given such a big role, but I feel for the money he is making and the role he is given he should contribute more. If you're going to make high end money you should be either an offensive or defensive machine and he isn't really either.

As for Gardiner give him a couple more years and he will be dominant. He is great now but still more to learn and work on, but obviously will be a great defenseman.. arguably their most valuable asset.
