killjoysfly
http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=614119&navid=DL|NHL|homeOTTAWA -- NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced Saturday morning after the Board of Governors meeting at the Fairmount Hotel that the Columbus Blue Jackets will host the 2013 NHL All-Star Game at Nationwide Arena. The game is scheduled to take place on Sunday, January 27 and will include the Molson Canadian NHL Skills Competition on Saturday, January 26.Bettman also announced that the Wynn Las Vegas Resort will host the 2012 NHL Awards Show on June 20 at the Encore Theater. The League has held its annual Awards Show in Las Vegas at the Palms Casino Resort for the past three years. Columbus first hosted a major NHL event in 2007 when the League brought the NHL Draft to Nationwide Arena. Chicago Blackhawks All-Star forward Patrick Kane was the No. 1 pick that year. The Columbus Dispatch reported Friday that an All-Star Game could generate between $15 and $25 million for the city of Columbus, "based on economic impact studies done by cities that have hosted previously."The Dispatch also reported that the Blue Jackets applied to host the All-Star Game in 2013, 2014 or 2015. The Blue Jackets are in the middle of a season that has fallen short of expectations after an aggressive offseason. They are last in the NHL with just 32 points through 49 games. eew. ruxpin
And so the league push to try to save a sh!tty organization in Columbus begins. Want to save the franchise? Take it from the owners and sell it.
yave1964
We are Wings fans, huge wings fans, we live in Mount Gilead, about 40 minutes north of Columbus and get to at least half a dozen CBJ games a year, Within an hour of the announcement my wife already had us signed up on a waiting list for the game and or the skill competition. If we can only get to one it will be the skill competition, Missed the draft a few years ago, glad Columbus has something after how bad the year has been. ruxpin
Just clarify...my slam wasn't on Columbus. Hockey could very well work there. It won't with the current ownership and management of the Blue Jackets. And now the league will try to artificially pump it up rather than making sure the product is good. The Jackets will be the same team after the ASG as they were before. It will, however, give the fans a chance to really sheer again, and lift their spirits. Digityman
As @ruxpin said Columbus really needs a change in management more than anything. I don't understand how that hasn't happened already. The inability to draft players (and keep them) is pretty sad. But as @WingNut722 said, it will lift the spirits a bit of the faithful BJ fans (ha) and then it will be back to pre-ASG until changes are made at the top. But my point--fear?--is it's not "completely aside from that" from the league office point of view (I agree that in reality it is completely as you describe). It's an attempt by the league office to keep hockey relevant in an area in which it will become less and less so due to management/ownership incompetence. It's a shame, too, because hockey could actually do well there if it wasn't run by Larry, Curly, and Moe.I don't know how I feel in theory about the league simply taking over an organization that has proven itself horribly incompetent. Who defines that and what's the criteria? But it just seems like Columbus would be a good case.

The Blue Jackets tried moved into an area that is already hard-core Ohio State fans. Its tough to think that an Ohio citizen would shun an Ohio team because they've been rooting for an Ohio team for the past 50 years, but it's true. Which is why you never hear the citizens of Wisconsin clamoring for an NHL team. They have the Badgers and that's plenty. The great state of Minnesota has only ONE professional hockey team. You don't like the Wild (or the North Stars for that mattter)? There's always the Gophers.
