Pld finally dealt

Recommended Posts

Pld is a king, 8.5 for eight years. Harkins along for the ride, a solid ahl scorer who has not taken advantage of chances with the jets. Kings now have the deepest most talented centers in the west and possibly in the game

The jets added solid wingers is tell and vilardi and former first round center kupari who has done very little when given a chance.

Love the deal for both, jets get rid of headache in Dubois, add two solid wingers I am weary of who their centers will be especially if they trade scheifele to Boston or Detroit.  The kings are incredibly deep at center and still strong on the wing.

Going to be interesting to see how this plays out for PLD over the next few years. He is a solid two way center but I see him more as strong second line center than an elite first line center. 66 points in his best season is part of that.

More concerning though is this year's series against Vegas. He came out with a strong game 1 and said he wanted to be a difference maker only to fade away. It seems when things don't flow well for him for whatever reason his mind and game are impacted.

I don't understand why NHL teams continue to pay a premium in trade assets to acquire a guy who then signs a market-level extension.

The idea is to acquire guys with surplus value: A guy signing a giant market-level contract has, by definition, zero surplus value. In fact, it's likely the term of this contract will mean it has negative value by the time it's completed. (Think Kevin Hayes and Ryan Johansen.)

And for the privilege of overpaying this player for the next 8 seasons, LAK gave up a handful of legitimate NHL assets and a 2R pick. Incredible.

At 25, he’s already abandoned both Columbus and Winnipeg. Let’s see if he wants to stay in LA when the going gets rough.

He is erratic, both in terms of his impact and his effort. Always has been. Expect more of it.

Kings acquire Pierre-Luc Dubois from Jets, reach terms on extension

The Los Angeles Kings acquired Pierre-Luc Dubois from the Winnipeg Jets in a blockbuster trade Tuesday.

In return for Dubois, the Jets received forwards Alex Iafallo, Rasmus Kupari and Gabriel Vilardi, and a 2024 second-round draft choice.

Dubois also agreed to terms on an eight-year extension with the Kings, with an annual average value of $8.5 million.

"Pierre-Luc Dubois is an elite two-way center with a unique skillset, and we're excited to have him join the organization and commit to us long-term," Kings general manager and executive vice president Rob Blake said in a statement. "Over the last few seasons, he has proven the ability to contribute to all facets of the game and we are thrilled to be able to add a player of this caliber into our lineup."

Dubois, 25, was a pending restricted free agent and was not expected to re-sign with Winnipeg after reportedly requesting a trade earlier this month. That left the Jets to either find a suitable partner for him or likely enter arbitration and arrive on another one-year deal similar to the single-season pact Dubois agreed to a year ago as a restricted free agent

Dubois makes the Kings immediately better. He is a top-six center who can drive offense and contribute across special teams. Dubois is coming off a career-best season with 63 points in 73 games and two years ago hit a career-high 28 goals.

Winnipeg was able to restock its group up front with the package headlined by two skaters -- Vilardi and Iafallo -- who played key roles in Los Angeles' lineup in 2022-23.

Vilardi, 23, is a strong defensive forward who had a breakout season for the Kings, posting career highs in goals (23) and points (41). At 6-foot-3, Vilardi wields a similar size to Dubois and could play a similar power-forward-type game.

Iafallo, 29, tallied 14 goals and 36 points in 59 games last season. A defensive-minded winger who can kill penalties -- he averages nearly two minutes per game shorthanded -- Iafallo has two years remaining on his deal at $4 million a year.

Kupari, 23, is a center prospect who was Los Angeles' first-round draft choice (20th overall) in 2018. He played a career-high 66 NHL games last season, with three goals and 15 points.

That trio, along with the high draft selection, is an excellent haul for Winnipeg given the circumstances and Dubois' disinterest in staying with the Jets long-term. This is the second time Dubois has been moved in his young career, both times at his own behest. Dubois asked the Columbus Blue Jackets -- who drafted him third overall in 2016 -- for a trade before being shipped off to Winnipeg in 2020.

And Dubois will get his return to Winnipeg out of the way early this season. Los Angeles will visit the Jets just three games in, on Oct. 14.

Exactly....basically, sulked his way out of 2 franchises, and i give him 3 years tops before he wants out of LA as well.

Overpaid underachiever....

-You know that you overpaid for a Quebec-born player when Montreal bows out of the bidding war.

-Vilardi and Iafallo, alone, would be an over-pay. Add in Kupari and a 2nd, and this is one of the worst trades I can think of in the last bunch of years.

-Vilardi had 1 less 5v5 point last year than Dubois even though PLD played 250 more minutes.

-In the last two or three days, the Kings have traded four good players, three of whom are under 25, in exchange for the ability to overpay PLD for next eight years or he demands his next trade.

-If Rob Blake wants to re-sign Korpisalo, that probably means somebody like Arvidsson+ shakes loose.

tldr - this is a case of a GM finding his guy and paying whatever it takes to get him.

So the big question is where does PLD play?  If Kopitar and Danault both stay down the middle, is Dubois the 3rd Line Center or do the Kings bump Danault down to the 3rd line?  8.5 million is a lot of coin to be paying a 3rd line Center.  This most certainly ends any thought of Byfield playing Center for the Kings in the near future.  Does PLD get PP1 minutes?

I'm thinking DuBois gets the 2nd line centre and Danault goes to 3rd...they going roll all lines evenly get everyone pretty even ice time like Las Vegas and Calgary under Sutter...they building a heavy playoff team in LA...

Yeah LA overpaid for sure but Dubois does make LA better and they'll be fighting with Vegas for top spot in Pacific again...

If he slots in as a legit #2 and they can pair him with Danault with young wingers with talent they may have something.

Or they may have PLD.

With Luc-Dubois coming in the fold, assuming the 3 rookies at league minimum contracts to fill out their D corps (Clarke, Spence, Bjornfoot), that means they only have $2.1M in Cap left. That's $2.1M for a starting goalie and 2 more forwards (to get them to 22 man roster).

In other words, some talent is due to shake loose from the Kings roster, and at pennies on the dollar.

So, half a year later, and...

Maybe PLD needs a change of scenery. That should help, right?

That's really a major fail in the Kings' strategy that has been really good so far. The trade itself was bad but the contract extension was way worse. Dubois's 1-way game isn't fitting into the Kings' system and philosophy at all. With Perry gone, maybe the Hawks would need another big fat contract to help them reach the floor...
