From Presidents trophy to missing the playoffs in one year

First the Kings and now the Bruins. Wow.

Boston won the Presidents trophy last year and many thought they were going to be in the same shape this year with the hope that Loui Eriksson would step up and find his game to make up for glaring deficiencies on the wing. Boychuck and Hutchinson were let go because of being up against the cap so they hoped that the young kids would step up on the wing.

Nothing worked.

Krejci and Chara were injured for large portions of the year but you cannot blame injuries, the team was healthier than most.

It was as if the entire offense was in a season long slump. Bergeron led the team with 57 points, Marchand led with an anemic 24 goals. Eriksson bounced back a bit with 22 goals, Hamilton took over as the top blueliner. Pastrnak, the 18 year old first rounder played 46 games with 10 goals and didn't embarrass himself out of necessity.

The team aged badly. Seidenberg and Chris Kelly look old. Chara only managed 20 points in 63 games and is a shadow of himself. And for the most parts the kids showed themselves to be either not yet ready or completely overrated as prospects.

The future is cloudy at best in Boston.

@yave1964  Pasternak is gonna be a star, fantastic skater, wicked moves, awesome hockey IQ.  Really liked what I saw from Ryan Spooner also. The Bruins will be right back in the playoffs next year.

I see them in the conversation next year, but:

Chara will be another year older.

Krejci cannot stay healthy.

Bergeron played 81 games this year, I doubt he ever plays within 10 of that again at any point of his career.

A team with Rask is always going to be in the conversation but I don't see them as a cup contender anytime soon.

As much as people are knocking the Pens almost-collapse, if they had missed the playoffs they would have only been 3rd on the list of "Most Embarassed Non-Playoff Teams".

The Bruins were in trouble right when the season started.

The salary cap hit them hard where they made some idiotic moves.

Trading Johnny Boychuck for 2 consecutive 2nd round picks on October 4th was hard to swallow. 3.6 million. 31 years old.

He finishes with 9 goals 23 assists.

Chara on the other hand ....is 38 years old....looked 120 years old. Got 20 points. Injured and missed 20 games.7 mil. cap hit.

Stupid stupid stupid move not to get rid of Chara and keep JB.

Then the Bruins sign Simone Gagne. Huh?

Hamilton injured.

Seidenberg injured.

Krejci injured.

The bright spots on the team....Pasternak woke up Lucic. Spooner who I always liked gave some nice speed....and woke up Lucic.

Krug and Hamilton  looked solid.

Bergeron was incredible. Just freakin incredible.

Marchand woke up 1/2 way thru the season.

Sodergerg staerted off great then tailed off.

Ericsson was hot and cold throughout the year.

The Bruins  4th line needs total revamping.

Who to keep: Lucic, Pasternak, Spooner,Bergeron, Marchand, Soderberg, Ericsson, Paille, Hamilton, Krug, Seidenberg, McQuaid, Trotman Rask, Svedberg

To go: Chara, Kelly, Campbell,, Bartkowski, R. Smith

Parity, guys!

One has to think that Julien and Chiarelli are on borrowed time.

May sound strange but I would say Chirella  is on a shorter leash than Julien.

Julien I do believe just got a  nice contract extension at the beginning of the year.  For the type of team they had plus injuries....Julien did not bad considering.

Chirellas money management is the big question.

SO many perenial contenders enter cap hell next year with a lot of RFA's. The Bruins have the most attractive RFA's. Defensemen are rare on the UFA market, and Hamilton/Krug needing raises, the departure of Boychuk and the decline of Chara put the bruins in a tough spot

One one hand, you can bash Chiarelli for bad cap management. On the other hand, the Cup champs just missed the playoffs and are in cap hell too. Chicago is about to lose a lot of key guys themselves as they enter cap hell.

The winningest teams the past few years are in cap hell

Chicago has been in cap crunches now for a few seasons (and will be in it once again this off season)...yet somehow still manage to put out a contender year after year.

Will be interesting to see if Boston can make "the right moves" and still manage to put out a real contender even through their cap crunch as well.

That usually means you are doing something right though. Cap "hell" is when you are up against the cap and suck (not mentioning any names :D )....not up against the cap and winning Cups (or at least making the playoffs every year).

Chicago has never had to pay Toews and Kane 10.5 million each in cap hit either lol.

They both just finished 6.3 million contracts, and now? 10.5 each next season. A full 8 million dollars in cap space more taken on a team that was already tight.

Currently, they have 21 million in Kane/Toews. 19 million in their other forwards signed past this season. 15 million in Keith, Seabrook and Hjalmarson. 7 Million in Crawford/Darling.

That's 62 million invested in 8 Forwards, 3 defensemen and 2 goalies. Cap is 69 mill and by the sounds of it, either not going up by much, or going DOWN to 68 million.

So effectively, they have 6 million-8million to sign 4-5 forwards, 3-4 Defensemen.

2nd line center Richards is UFA, Winger Saad just scored 23 goals and 52 points and is RFA, Vermette is UFA and was a rental anyways. Checker Kruger is RFA. Defenseman Oduya, Roszival and Timmonen are UFA.

This is kind of major. It puts them in a situation not unlike the Pens where they are going to be thin depthwise.

For reasons I don't understand, Wilson did Chicago a cap favor by taking Smith for Desjardins, saving Chicago a bit over a Million next year.
