I didn't say "oldest" I said he had the most NHL experience. Leadership and experience can go hand in hand too. To the best of my knowledge Couturier is a member of the leadership core with the Flyers also, so frankly the honor of being named an assistant isn't out of line. icehole
So this is the thing that disturbs me constantly about couturier. I'll be honest, I haven't seen any world Cup yet since I've been busy and on vacations. I wasnt even sure what flyers were playing on what teams. Last night, I caught the end of the second period of the NA Russia game. A NA player had the puck in the neutral zone with some speed. There was another player slowly approaching the blue line and it looked like a potential rush. But the other player just stopped in the neutral zone for no reason while the puck handler entered the zone and it quickly became a 1 on 4. So I followed the other player to see who it was...guess who...our golden boy. What was he doing? Was there a shift change? I understand he is a responsible player, but three other players were back and Russia had all players going back to defend their end. He has to join that rush! I'm in mid-season form already! Should be a fun season.

Which of course is a good thing, I doubt the Flyers management was too happy with him being played in back to back pre-tourney games after being injured in game 1. Wearing an A doesn't necessarily mean he is one of the best players, he does however have the most NHL experience on that roster. Couturier was in his element with being on the ice for every penalty kill. It isn't as if a 4th line player hasn't ever worn an A before with the Flyers. Isn't it great to see your team's 2nd line center as a PK specialist during exhibition games! Should be an exciting season!

My "captain obvious point", which by the way is very accurate, is that I'm really down on the flyers. Since hextall took over, my excitement level for the team has declined dramatically. I'm not even sure when season activities start. That pi $$es me off! Chip Kelly ruined the Eagles, but a pencil pushing nerd turned the team around in one off season. We're told "just wait...be pateient". Why can't this team be a more exciting flip? Why can't the young "stars" make the team? Cap space? Development? B.S. They had a chance to unload couturier for picks and to relieve cap. They decided to give him a nice contract because he is a good penalty killer. Read could have been dealt. Our superstar captain was left off the Olympic team, and now he can barely crack the lineup on the world Cup team. Maybe that trade option should have been looked at closer. Development is being phased out. If a player has what it takes, he should be able to make the team by at least 20 years old. So, not much to get excited about. I guess I'll have to wait to see what "studs" won't be on the team this year.

Should be an exciting season! I hear ya, but sometimes you have to put players in positions to push their development. (Which ironically seems to be the opposite of the Hextall philosophy for adding rookies to the team.) To Couturier's credit, he has 5 shots on net over these 2 games thus far, which is basically half as much as the top line forwards, yet it is one more than RNH and one less than Ghost. 5 shots on net in two games is more than most of all the USA forwards for comparison, and it's one more than Ovechkin and 3 more than Datsyuk. I am hopeful Couturier will push his offensive game more this season as it will be his 2nd season as a 2nd line center. Although he still has some flaws it isn't too late to completely give up on the kid either. That said he isn't off my list of questionable roster player / positions either. Why can't the young "stars" make the team? Cap space? Development? B.S. Well for one it is a different sport. And as in football they have spent years in a development league. It's called college football. It's a lot easier to hit on a 23 year old (it's how old Wentz is will be 24 in december) than 18 year olds. Ivan is just 19 years old if he was in college football he would be just a freshman more than likely having to be redshirted maybe. It's the difference between drafting men and kids. So even though it is college football it's a development league like it or not. And even though you're drafting men as you can see with many bust that it is still not an exact science. And it is even harder with kids some who are still going through growth spurts. For instance when Carson Wentz was a freshman he was 5-7 and once he had graduated he was 6-5. He sure wouldn't have been drafted as a QB in the NFL as a 5-7 guy. Hell he'd be lucky to be even draft as a QB at 6-0.

It's also different in the way that you don't need to be the biggest, strongest player to succeed and help the team. Speed and skill win in the NHL. The flyers have (or should I say the flyers "own") players that have speed and skill. I don't think the Eagles will make the playoffs and they might not even have a winning record, but how many eagles fans (I am not) would put Bradford back in there to increase the chances of making the playoffs? I would much rather watch some young exciting skill make some mistakes and miss the playoffs rather than watch some boring players win some games and squeak into the playoffs again. Couturier may be part of the exciting future of this team, but if keeping him on the team, on the second line is blocking the core of the future from coming up, I don't want him on the team. He certainly hasn't shown me one thing that says he belongs on the second line.
